Can Vitamin C Cure Colds?

    When I drink no OJ or take Vitamin C, I get colds. When I get 500 mg of Vitamin C daily, I do not get colds. When airplane travel is on the schedule, I can plan on a cold 48 hours later unless I have had Vitamin C. It is true my experience that once the cold has been caught, Vitamin C seems to have little impact on severity or duration. I'm just one observation, but I intend to keep getting my Vitamin C, study or no study.

    I took vitamin C for an entire year and never caught a severe cold. Yea I might have felt symptoms of being sick but it wasn't strong, like needing to visting a doctor. I never even took the flu shot, that's how much vitamin C is effect. But then again, people are all different, some get very sick or some are mild. As of now, I'm slowly catching a cold, maybe I should or shouldn't blame my girlfriend. At least i've been taking my daily dosage of vitamins and minerals. Which makes me not prone into catching this cold. My girlfriend was extremely sick from a cold recently, that she needed antibiotics. Saliva passed through kissing, holding hands, standing by her the entire time. Wasn't it contagious? I don't think so, maybe the C kicked in good for me. Guess that makes me part of that 50 percent mentioned by the article.

    I would suggest to the writer of the article to go to the Linus Pauling institute and to get a book about vitamins and their effects on the body! It's common knowledge that the minimun daily allowance of vitamin C is totally useless against a cold, and that it was recommended by the US government to combat chronic diseases like scurvy and pellagra. Again to have an effect the dosage must be remarkably higher (let's say 2-4000mg a day) plus it must be taken in conjunction with other vitamins and minerals.
    again: this is common knowledge that even the WHO recognises as medical truth (or the Australian medical board). Please, do your job and check your sources!

    Just because vitamin C did not work for the people in these studies, does not mean that it does not help others. The minute I start feeling even an inkling of a scratchy throat or minor cold symptoms I take about 400 mg-600mg of vitamin C before I go to bed, another 400mg when I wake up and drink a ton of orange juice. Also, I eat toast with pressed raw GARLIC which also is very affective for fighting off the cold. There have only been a few instances when these remedies did not work for me, but I believe they work incredibly in reducing my symptoms as well as duration of the common cold.

    if i took orange juice on a daily basis,would it mean i wouldnot catch a cold?

    The one FACT that was left out of this article is the reason it got os much attention in the first place is because of the apparent effect it has when u take it... but the only reason it helps the body during a cold is that the body uses "C" to absorbe other vitamins and nutrients at a high rate so that the body fights off and defends itself better than if it were run down with little help of absorbing the good stuff your feeding it. the vitamin helps get nutrients and vitamins where they need to go, anyone in the medical/ pharmacutical field knows that... just because the author of this article hasn't done his homework thats no reason to assume that it is a marketing ploy. get a clue people and get informed before u take it!

    I will be turning 106 yrs next month and if theres one thing I have learned its that every time I try to have sex I cant get it up. Is this because I need more vitamin C? Can someone help?

    I have just recently written a book called "Grandmas taking vitamin C in the shower again" I think it will sell quite well. Its about a deranged psychopathic grandmother who thinks shes al copone!

    What a ridiculous study! 200 mg. of vitamin C is a joke. Your liver needs a minimum of 3,000 units per day to function normally. Linus Pauling took 20,000 units per day and proclaimed that you need to take mass quantities for it to work. What is this 200 mg. per day stuff. More studies done with an agenda. The food industry has a revenue equal to ALL the U.S. Corporations combined and the lobbyist are very well paid.

    I think the above article is complete and utter hogwash. Linus Pauling has so much evidence its overwhelming. Sure if you take the recommended allowance you won't see any effects of course. If you take 1 gram of ascorbic acid vitamin C crystals mixed in water every hour for a minimum of six hours as you feel a cold coming on you will be amazed at how many never see the light of day. This is well documented and studies are all over the internet as well as the linus pauling institute. There are also many studies showing that Vitamin C also dramtically boosts the immune system which ultimately is what brings the body back into balance.

    Linus Pauling has another book published in the 1980's called "How to Live Longer and Feel Better " where he has studies showing the positive effects of Vit C on cancer and other illnesses. He recommend 10 grams or more for a cold. 200mg is way to little. Its like lifting 1 pound weights and expecting to get buff.
    This study was also influenced by the drug companies to shoot down Vit C.

For all the case studies and double blind placebo's simply google Linus pauling and there are so many it will make your head spin. Also the Linus pauling institute has many as well.

    Taking 200mg of Vitc a day to cure a cold is like lifting 1 pound weights and wondering why you're not getting buff. It's too little.

    Before I entered medical school I though I knen it all, ha! Its not untill many years later until I really learned about how vitamin C really works. So Im going to tell you my secret, but you must follow the instructions very carefully for it to work. 1st: After you take a crap, immediatley grab the terd while its warm from the toilet bowl..2nd: Place terd onto clean plate (make sure plate is perfectly clean) 3rd: Sprinkle some oregano ever so gently around the steaming parts of the terd only.. 4th: This part is the most important...Pick up terd and begin to eat but do not for any circumstances get any of it on your shirt or other clothing!
