It is a shame Pauling did not stick to what he was good at. But he is not the only one.People who have shown themselves bright in an area are seen as experts on other areas too. This is because people act like a crowd, following an alleged authority. There are no authorities, have never been and will never be. But only people who comes up with a fact or two.

I think the above article is complete and utter hogwash. Linus Pauling has so much evidence its overwhelming. Sure if you take the recommended allowance you won't see any effects of course. If you take 1 gram of ascorbic acid vitamin C crystals mixed in water every hour for a minimum of six hours as you feel a cold coming on you will be amazed at how many never see the light of day. This is documented.

Well, we must first look at the cause of colds. Every year the body is subject to mild hypothermia which causes all the blood and lymph vessels to constrict squeezing the excess fluid out of the body. Most of it exits the kidneys and liver, and the rest leaves through the nose. This creates a culture medium for viruses and bacteria. Bacteria will grow there if the mucus is not discharged fast enough. Viruses are usually the first to grow. Viruses no more cause nasal congestion and colds than algae causes standing water. I give all my patients herbal expectorants that accelerate bodies ability to rid itself of the excess mucus. The faster the mucus can be expelled the decreased time it has to culture viruses or bacteria. Once the body is complete with expelling mucus the body will return to normal and be ready to survive the winter. Vitamin C is grately needed during this time. Vitamin C is used by the immune system and adrenals to keep your energy up and inflammation down. Go to pubmed.org to look studies on vitamin c.

You know one of the secrets in my family for many years has been to suck on an a very large nipple for several hours. This relieves stress and sharpens the mind among other things. Make sure the nipple has been properly cleaned before use.

I've always drank a lot of Orange Juice and taken supplements with Vitamin C and I can't remember the last time I caught a cold...This article must have some agenda with some drug companies...what about a toxic pill to cure a cold?????

For 8 months Ive been experimenting with my daughter. I have finally discovered the reason why she has drool coming out the side of her mouth. After seeing the results of not giving her any vitamin C for 8 months she has lost her teeth and has become brain dead, wow I really learned alot from this control test, I feel good about this.

Well, must first look at the cause of colds. Every year when it turns cold our bodies are subject to mild hypothermia. As a result our bodies change to conserve heat by constricting blood and lymphatic vessels. This causes the body to throw off excess fluids. Those fluids accumulate in the nose and chest creating a culture medium for viruses and bacteria. Viruses no more cause nasal congestion and colds than algae causes standing water. I find that if I shove some vitamin c tablets up my butt, then pure some hot chocolate with marshmellows down after it I will never get sick. Note: Hot chocolate must have marshmellows to work.

Agree with most everyone here ---the large dose to bowel tolerance is incredibly effective at the first sign of cold symptoms. I have proved this from experience to my own complete satisfaction many times now.

What a disgraceful article. As one person remarked, it's no wonder print media is dying.

Zinc does work though. Especially the form found in the homeopathic remedy "Zicam". It works so so so so good, that I can't believe columiss bother to write articles about Vitamin 'C' anymore. Get with the program, Zinc has been proven in numerous studies to reduce the severity and duration of the common cold. I've actually personnaly witnessed better. it has actually stoppe dthe cold in its early throws fromtaking hold in my body, and riding it within a day or two .I typically take it the first day i feel even a sniffle. It helps to stave off the worst part of the cold, and if taken early nough, sometime it'll never progress beyond a slight runny nose and a bad tast in the back of my mouth. If for whatever reason though I don't take Zicam when I feel the cold taking hold, then I pay for it. Dearly. The $10 I spend on a bottle of Zicam is far outweighted by the nmerus oTC cold suppressent meds I take after the fact. Not to mention if my cold spawns a sinus inection, which it often does for me, Then I have doctor visits and perscription antiibiotics to add to the bill. Zicam is the closest thing we have to a cure for the common cold. If you havent tried it yet, do, There are no side effects besdes a slight burning in your nose for a minute or two after you take a dose. The only ther appreciable side effect you will gladly welcome. Your cold symptoms will disappear for a period of about 4 hours.thats right, disappear, for the most part. Someimte I forget I was even catching a cold, but Im soon reminded of teh fact a few hours later when I feel the Zicam wearing off. I should rephrase that. You feel teh cold commign back. The Zicam doesn't feel like anything. It has no noticiable effects except for numbing the effects of the cold vireus. Its truely an amazing effect. You can actually feel the cold comming back and the zicam wearing off right at the prescribed hour. The major downside to the drug is that you hve to start it right when the cold begins to take hold to maximize its effects. It kind of works like Tami-Flu, if you take either within the first 24 hours, you feel as good as can be expected if you take them as prescribed. If however, you wait a day or two into the cold or flu to take either drug, then you are better off not having taken either at all because they loose their effectiveness. Newsweek please focus on the future of healthcare and not the past. ie. Zinc not Vitamin C in your reporting.

200 mg is too low for a reasonable result. I personally take 1,500 to 2,000 mg a day with 500 mg per meal and an additional 500 mg before bed. These in addition to essential oils have greatly reduced the frequency of which I catch a cold from 4 to 5 times per year to 1 or 2 times. Dr. Pauling advocated much higher uses than 200 mg per day and the fact that his name is mentioned in connection with this article is an insult.

The best thing I've ever found that actually works is Hydrogen Peroxide. As crazy as this may sound the next time you have a cold try putting some Hydrogen peroxide in each ear for 10 minutes on each side.what have you got to lose? For $1.00 and 20 minutes of your time your cold is gone the next day.

it doesnt really matter if it helps or not. the fact of the matter is that americans need to be eating healthier things and if it means they have to believe something untrue to eat those things so be it. how about this "oranges cure common obesity"
