Agree emphatically with dwwatford. At the first sign of a cold I down C to bowel tolerance (several grams of crystalline C dissolved in water) and if I do this quickly enough I have warded off the normal development of colds.

So, what about rhinovirus, the agent responsible for the common cold?

How many fat old people do you see in this country lining up to buy their 5-10+ prescriptions that are only barely keeping them alive. IT'S SAD. I also suggest watching Michael Moore's movie SICKO which is another slap in the face reality session.

Nobody even knows what a "cold" is, Sarah Kliff never mentions that. She's too busy watering down the effects of a natural remedy like most FDA puppets wether it's intentional or not. For all scientists know, a cold may just be an internal cleanse causing us to release all the toxins trapped in our bodies.

Your study is incorrect because the level of vitamine C used in your study is too little to do anything about anything. I take 2000 mg of vitamin C at the onset of a cold and it begins to knock the cold out within about 12 hours and then I follow that up with 1000mg per day for the next 4 days. Cold no longer get the best of me.

I have to disagree with this later study. I am in the healthfield and I am around sick people all of the time.
Twelve years ago after getting sick almost evey week with some type of cold I decided I would Vitamin C to my diet on a daily basis . Most of the times in fruit juice and occassionally a pill. I have to say that for twelve years I have only had one cold . I will have to applaud Linus Pauling obviously he knew something they do not know today

    notnot dopdnot know today

My take on Vitamin C is from my personal experience and not guided or influenced by any drug company. I think some people througout the world has a habit to run after bullshit researches and have skewed mentality. I thought this is pervalent in India only but I think the developed countries have also a copius supply of people who wants to escape from the reality by thinking of some utopian schemes. Next time I say that I like Yahoo mail over Gmail, these jaundiced eyed people will say Yahoo Paid me to do the same. I would expect more saner comments from respected people--but my finding certainly points to the abundance of idiots througout the world. Thanks.

I have been taking 1000 mg Vitamin C once a day for past four years. When I feel symptom of cold, I will increase the dosage to 2000 mg until symptom goes away. I have not had a full blown cold for four years. My boyfriend on the other hand gets sick two to three times a year and I have been taking care of him each time without getting sick. Overall Vitamin C has been great contribution to my good health. ???

VITAMIN-C HELPED ME FOR SURE. I used to get common cold pretty much every other day. It was triggered by coming in short contact (1 minute or less) with cold water or cold floor or dust. I started taking vitamin -c tablets and saw tremendous improvement. Then I moved to US from India six years back and started drinking a glass of Orange-juice daily, which was not part of my diet in India. AND IN LAST SIX YEARS I HAVE NOT SEEN COLD!! :) Cold water, cold floor or dust - nothing bothers me anymore. May be Vitamin -C helps a certain gene pool.

I think the alternative medicine crowd is all about identity construction and feeling superior to the "mainstream" The blatant brain dead behavior is mental illness. Who else would go to a vitamin store and let a 17 year old minimum wage worker tell them how to cleanse their livers? Vitamin companies make billions of dollars selling pills that haven't been tested and have no FDA approval. How do you know what is in these outrageously priced tablets. Many tests have found some vitamins to be very helpful from everything from heart disease to dementia so why do people think there is a plot against vitamin C? Vitamin companies have a huge profit margin, much larger than pharmacuetical companies, but the "alternate" crowd still clutches their unfounded beliefs as tightly as the vitamin makers clutch their billion dollar profits from sugar pills. And they don't have to bother with 12 years of medical school. Sweet.

Alternative medicine has nothing to do with "feeling superior", it has to do with taking responsibility for your own health. No one who does that would let a 17-year-old tell them how to do ANYTHING with their health, we do our own research to make educated decisions about our health. It's really only common sense that nutrition, not chemicals (ie. drugs) are what our bodies thrive, and with the right nutrients our bodies need they will thrive. Bigger profit margins in vitamins than prescription drugs? This statement alone shows how massively uninformed you are. Educate yourself! You'll be doing yourself a favor. I have taken large doses of vitamin C and other vitamins all of my adult life and have never had to see a doctor for anything, I RARELY even get a cold, it's been 20 years. I never ned to take any drugs when I do get a cold, I even fought off a nasty virus I got in Mexico that takes 6 weeks to get rid of with special antibiotics, I kicked it in a week and a half with high doses of vitamin C. My family and friends have cured many ailments with high doses, once you see it work time after time after time, you don't question it. And it costs only pennies a day!

Which Big Pharma company do you work for? And how much of Prozac and Vioxx did you take to render you brain dead?

    • Posted By: ChrisB. @ 11/19/2007 9:55:26 PM

Thank you for your opiniated reply. Now please do yourself the favor of researching just how much money goes into Drug Company marketing in this country alone. And then take a look at the actual truth concerning profit margins. I'll give you a hint, it's no contest and Big Pharma is the very big winner. But I suppose if your goal is just to debase people based on your own uniformed predjudices, then you've nominally succeeded! Congratulations

THE HARM DONE BY YET ANOTHER FACTUAL PROCLAMATION PREACHED TO US AND NOW TOSSED TO THE GARBAGE BIN BY TIME IS THAT THE SCIENTIFIC WORLDS CREDIBILTY IS FURTHER DIMINISHED.......THEY HAVE BECOME THE INTELLECTUAL WEATHERMAN....

I agree with m4rk.gm4il, you must take large doses of Vitamin C when feeling ill or under the weather. However, I believe the the RDA of 60 mg is not near enough to help fight anything. My personal opinion is that 200 mg daily on a regular (non-sick days) will help in preventing colds and flus from becoming to severe. Vitamin C's main function is to boost the immune system. I don't know anyone on this planet who could not benefit from a immune system boost everyday, especially with everything that is floating out there, with international travelers coming and going with GOD knows what. Airbourne virsus are more common today than when the pilgrams came over. Our bodies can't store or reproduce it so why not boost the dosage to give our bodies a slight advantage. Slight it might be, but every bit counts and is a big help in the long run of things.

Interesting...Linus Pauling is the only person who won Two unshared Nobel Prizes. So, are we going to believe to people who want to add Lipitor to drinking water?

i would say 2 tall full glasses of orange juice a day is great, but water is still the best because it cleanses out your body fluids drink plenty of water. Herbal tea is also great, drink one in the morning and one at night. I rarely get sick, thats because my parents raised me the way they were raised in asia. we drink hot tea like water, no sodas and coffees. I drink the orange juice with pulp at lunch time and mid afternoon. most of the time its water and tea. but then again it all goes back on what kind of food you eat and the environment you live in. Clean house or dirty house, junk food or healthy foods, exercise, and plenty of sleep etc. vitamin c alone will not help our health. thats just my opinion as a regular person.
