I daily take vitamine C in the form of fresh oranges. I take 4 or 6 oranges daily. I think the cold is prevented to a very large extent. I do not agree with the finding.

Whenever i get the flu or cold virus during flu season....
i chew 500 mg of vitamin C 3 x a day followed by LOTS of water.
sometimes i mix it with fruit juices - Calamansi, Dalandan, Orange or Grape
and my flu or cold will be gone.
my wound heals fast and without a scar.
antibiotics ? -- it can only cause diarhea and temporary deafness.
cold tablets ? - it can only cause me sinusitis.

sometimes people around me got sore eyes or sometimes cold or flu -
which caused by a virus.... but me Im just not affected....

The government's recommended daily allowance is not concidered to be a guidline to follow among educated people. The GRDA is normally a lot lower then what the body actually needs. Thus 200 mg of vitamin c is not barely enough for the body to respond. Studies show that taking 1000-2000 mg of vitamin c pre-cold and during a cold greatly increases your bodies imune system.

You failed to state that Dr. Pauling never recommended orange juice nor 200 miligrams of Vitamin C. He prescribed daily mega doeses of Vitamin C and outlived all the doctors bought by the big drug companies.who attacked his theory. Have you been bought too? Amanda Spurlock

I agree with Amanda. It's in the mega doses that you get the benefits. Once you begin taking these mega doses, some people have a brief spate of dihorrea but that soon goes away once the body gets accustomed to it. I don't know about anyone else and this might simply be a placebo effect but when I find myself sneezing more than once a day - a sign for me that I am coming down with something - I take a rounded teaspoon of Vitamin C which amounts to 3,000 - 5,000 mgs in a glass of warm water and my sneezing ends and I do not come down down with a cold or anything else. It should also be noted here that smokers like myself can simply benefit from taking Vitamin C. I read that in a journal some time ago. Bill Leikam

THANK YOU Amanda. This is yet another shameless "scientfic study" that doesn't disprove anything. Pauling's theory was based on mega-doses of Vitamin C, not doses that were just slightly more than the miniscule US RDA. Big Pharma, meets Big Media. Thanks for nothing Newsweek.

I take vitamine C daily for the last 5 years. I t ake 4 fresh oranges daily. I find that I have positive result and I do not catch cold so frequently as I used to without C. I therefore inclined to think that Vitamin C is working to prevent cold.

Common colds is common in the middle east due to sandstorm that spreads ionic particles in the air. Due to this problem when I catch cold my remedy is taking 1gm of vitamin C daily and supplemented with fresh squeezed orange juice. It only takes 2 to 3 days that I suffer from all the symptoms of colds. I found it to be okay as remedy to colds.

Well....after reading this dissapointing article, I think i'll take Skippylo's advice and go with the vitamin c and chicken soup! Maybe i'll finally get over this cold!

I found that the most effective substance besides vitamin C are essential oils. That in conjuction with the Ningxia wolfberry for boosting the immune system. I use the oil blend of Thieves ( a mixture used during the Black Plague) that WORKS in killing viruses and bacteria and fungi the hosts for disease. Any questions write me at jdogzworld@yahoo.com

I agree with the cure. When I feel the inminent attack of a cold, or a flu, I take 2.000 or 4.000 mgs, day, and the cold or flu desappears. That??s no placebo effect. thatt??s the reality, for me, anyway.

I agree with most posts in here. The 60mg recommended daily dose of VitC is a joke if the desired effect is to prevent or cure colds. Fact is the body can only absorb so much VitC and the rest is flushed out but who says its max capacity is 60mg all the time? The most important ingredient in the powerful cold medicine Airborne is VitC (@ 1,000mg!) and recommended dosing is every four hrs. Go figure.

It would be nice if you describe also the scientific evidence to proof why vit C doesn't help much to prevent the cold. Otherwise, it seems that this articles is only opinion also...

I think if you find your vitamin C in natural doses, like oranges and grapefruits and the like, you are more likely to achieve the health benefits not found in the supplemental pharmeceutical crap given in these studies. You must find your cure among the natural resources that God has given us.
Also, note that the most prominent fruits during cold and flu season are citrus. God's not a dummy. He knew what would cure our ails. Just eat seasonal fruits and veggies in your regular diet and you will maintain health!

I would think that Pauling also included other healthy habits along with the vitamin C that would be important for any health remedy to take effect. I think anyone would be foolish to immediately disregard the advice of such an important scientist and a man who lived well into his 90's.

I find this article somewhat hard to believe. Whenever I start feeling a cold coming on, as long as I take a high dose of Vit C for a bout 2 days the cold vanishes. If I don't take any, I usually end up bedridden. This however, is my own personal experience. It just seems too likely that these studies were done by pharmaceutical companies who are aimed at selling their own products (which by the way usually mask symptoms, not necessarilly treat them).
