I have found that not only will vitamin C help but the most effective substance to use are essential oils and a fruit from China called the Ningxia Wolfberry (Gogi). It has MORE vitamin C than oranges. It is the most antioxidant fruit that exists!! I have had no flu or cold or sniffles in the 3 years of using the oils and wolfberry juice. If you have any questions please write me at jdogzworld@yahoo.com.

I'd have to say I load up on Vitamin C once I feel like I'm getting a cold and I seem to not be very affected by the S/S of it. I would say I'm over a cold in avout 3 days max; and I only get sick about once a year....

When I started getting body aches and pains a few weeks ago I went to the store and almost bought my favorite - Nyquil. Instead I tried vitamin c (1000 mg a day) and a homeopathic lozenge. The next day I felt better and in 2-3 days completely well. I usually finish 1 bottle and/or more of Nyquil and still feel bad. I no longer believe in drugs for what ails me and will continue to do natural remedies.

bull****, which drug company secretly funded this? Probably synthetic, ASCORBIC ACID only. A little monetary incentive can skew the results to meet any agenda. A glass of orange juice does not have bioflavanoids which is 85% of whole vitamin C. Enjoy the expensive urine : )

The results of the study as given, give us little...Pauling dealt in the thousands of milligrams and used a full spectrum, non-petroleum based Vit. C formulation. Try taking real Vitamin C to bowel tolerance. hydrogen peroxide..a few drops in each ear...resting a few minutes on each side so that it works its way down is a good preventive measure as well.

Well, you said earlier that Linus Pauling have no scientific evidence, however it's better for you to describe the scientific evidence also why the Vit C doesn't have an impact to prevent the cold.

Whoever wrote this Newsweek needs to check the facts. This professor Monto needs to do more research. The article did mention that it might help a little depending on the dosage in adults but it did not help in pediatric person. KT

The contradictory results of the mentioned study should already raise a red flag. Some observations: 1) Most (not all, but I'm at the point to say most) doctors are arrogant and self-serving, not wanting you to know about any treatment that doesn't involve a money making drug, 2) Vitamin C studies often seem to be tainted by not using a high enough dose, and not dividing the daily dose, and 3) Linus Pauling was no dummy. There continues to be plenty of evidence in many, many ongoing studies to indicate the value of supplemental vitamin C. However, a glass of oj has minimal C, won'it do anything.

I disagree , i used to get killer colds and lose of energy last ing sometimes as long as 3 and one half weekks. i started taking large doses of vitamin C as much as 1500 mgs. daily in 1977 and had only 3 colds
with discomfort for no more than 3 or 4 days , if the runny nose started , a decongestant tablet along with
an extra vitamin C dose stopped the runny nose discomfort. That's what works for me.!

I recently heard on Michael Savage's Radio program that a long time friend of his had passed a few weeks ago who had determined Vitamin C taken in amounts in relation to illness actually helps aid the body in its fight against ailments. Growing up I had a teacher who was about to go through surgery to remove a cancer, in which the Surgeon prescriped 15000 milligrams per day in water. She made it through surgery quite well.... but to get to my trial....I recently ran into the bug which has gone around Texas here lately...most people lasting 1-2 week being sick, my wife and child being two of them....They both used Zicam from day one of the sickness, whereas I started out at a measly 500mg for the first day. Needless to say I quickly fell ill after day one, running fever to 101.3. So I incresed my intake to 2500mg for the next day, and feeling a little better by day 3 I lowered it to 1500mg (bloating, which is a sign of too much vitamin C told me I had plenty). On the fourth day I felt significally better, lowering my Vitamin C intake to 500mg for the next two days..... My wife and child both were ill for the better part of 6 days....myself, 3 days, a stretch 4 days. Perhaps Vitamin C helped, perhaps not, however, I didn't use manufactured drugs, which made me feel better anyhow.

None of these studies were any good because you need a minimum of 3,000 mgs a day! And you won't get that much from drinking Orange juice....You have to supplement it.

Ever since I read "Can we live 150 years" which is written by doctor Mikhail Tombak, Ph.D. I have drank several glasses of orange juice almost every day for over a year and I haven't so much as sneezed more than a few times in a row. I certainly haven't gotten a cold.

I just take Del Monte Pineapple Juice whenever I feel I'm getting the cold virus... It stops in a day or two.. I hate taking medicines because I think it doesn't do good to my body.

The article sights that 200 mg. or more daily did nothing. That may be true. Linus Pauling suggests mega doses and not small doses to cure a cold. So I don't see how this article is any proof that vitamin C does nothing to prevent the common cold. I'm sure doctors would rather you see them than be well so why not proove vitamin C does nothing. I've taken 10G at a time and stopped a cold in it's tracks many times.

I take vitamin C often though not every day, an average of 250 tablets / year ( 500mg tablet )
that means, sometimes, i take it every day, sometimes, i skip.....
It does not prevent me from getting flu or cold but when i catch a flu or cold especially during
flu season , I use vitamin C as a medicine. It depends on my sickness, if I am not feeling well
or I feel getting sick, I will take 500mg Vitamin C 2x a day . One in the morning
and 1 in the evening or afternoon. Then followed it up with lots of water.
I chew it like a candy. It is a sour pill, doesnt take good but that is what
i have to do to feel better. but when I really get sick ...for example I got wet
by the rain or someone sneezes besides me and i got the cold virus,
    I chew 500mg Vitamin C ---- 3x a day. then follow it up with 2 glasses of
water. And sometimes mix it with orange or calamansi or Dalandan fruits.
believe me, my flu or cold will not last 3 days. I encourage those who
are sufferring from a long illness of runny nose, cold or flu to CHEW
not just swallow 500 mg Vitamin C ( 2 or 3 times a day ) and follow it
up with Orange, Calamansi or any juice, (Grape juice is also effective) .
Then look for the result. It will not fail you.
Others say that it can cause diarhea if taken on large amount, heck no!!!
antibiotics can really cause diarhea and sometimes temporary deafness.
Before, I took antibiotics to cure my wound infection as prescribed by doctor,
it didnt helped me. I just get diarhea. That is when I started substituting
Vitamin C. My wound healed fast and it didnt have scar....not a mark.
If you are sick I believe you need more than 200mg for it to be effective.
it depends on your body weight. 500 mg is enough for me and it works.

as a registered nurse in the philippines.I guess vitamin C does not actually cure common colds but rather boost our immune system and thereby fighting viruses or bacteria.

Point and case. All media including Newsweek are owned and operated by corporations that do not have your best interests in mind. The are part of a corporate machine intented to guide you whichever way makes them the most money. Welcome to the Matrix.

It's not that vitamin C doesn't or does prevent colds. To really find out what dosage is effective there has to be some titration method to determine this. Like in prescribing medications to patients, say one medication can be used as arthritic meds or chemotherapy depending on the dosage. I haven't seen any studies to really verify the efficacy of vitamin C in treating cold. Sometimes you have to wonder who the heck are these people making claims for or against anything without proper scientific methods. Cheers, Dr Patrick.
