Generally, when people catch a cold, their body's are under stress, their immune system is down and therefore, more susceptible to infection. Vitamin C is involved in the production of catecholamines, increases iron absorption (for healthy blood cell function), and enhances the action of Natural Killer cells in vivo, making it a very useful vitamin (in higher doses in those that are stressed) for those people who have a stressful lifestyle. This seems to be, in this day and age, most of the population.

all i know is every elements (vit, K,Zn,etc) are necerarily important for our body but not exceed its normal dosage. Everything that's too little or too much is not good.

I find that if I shove my hand way up my butt crack I wont get sick.

increasing your intake of vitamin C is useless, your body only absorbs the amount it needs. its mostly the placebo effect.

Another stupid article that ignores the facts. Linus Pauling tested using doses of around 10,000 IUs per day of vitamin C and it worked, the only studies that have duplicated his tests confirmed the results quite conclusively. Unfortunately, too many studies since have focused on USDA levels of about 60 IUs per day and the study quoted used 200 IUs per day. (IU and Mg. are the same amount, by the way.) So, please don't ignore the tremendous benefits of C in both the prevention and duration of colds. Like the gentleman who responded before me, I take 500 mg of Ester C daily and triple it if I feel I may be catching a cold. Guess what? I haven't had a serious cold in over ten years! You can do the same.

That is ridiculous.Every time I feel a cold coming on I take 1,000mgs of vitiminC (Ester C)or more and my cold is wiped out in a day or two with lots of rest and fluids. It works every time for me

The problem with the studies on Vitamin C is that the dosing is not right.in all of the studies reported. Vitamin C works beautifully if it is dosed properly and doses of 200 mg are not adequate. The dose has to be individualized and has to be given in mega doses. In my experiemce. which is quite extensive, Vitamin C works beautifully both in preventing and curing colds. From what I have observed, when the proper dose is administered, the individual's immune systsem is definitely stimulated. I have been able to eliminate colds in myself in 24-48 hours , but this entails taking doses of 20,000 mgs or more/day....in divided doses. In my 35 year experience of using Vitamin C both for myself and my patients.....I would have to agree completely with Dr. Pauling.

My personal empirical evidence is that 2000 mg of vitamin C every 4 hours after the onset of a cold reduces both its severity and its longevity. I haven't taken any kind of painkiller or cold remedy in 25 years.

Well, of course 200 mlg are not going to do anything if you are sick. The government's recommended dose is ridiculous because they want us to get sick and to buy drugs from the pharmaciutical companies. It's all about business! If you are sick you need to take 5-10 grams of vitamin C per day, spread out equally thoughout the day. Check doctoryourself.com for more info if you really want to be healthy.

Last week I starting getting a cold. Every year fall/winter I get at least 2 or 3 that lead me to the doctors with ear infections, sinus infections and throuat. Then the give you the usual 10 day antibiotics. This time I pumped my self with Vit C, about 10000mg each day. My cold started to get better within 12 hours and was totallo gone in 3 days.

This is just another jack*ss report. Let me ask the author this. Did you know that the Human is one of the only animals that do not make their own vitamin C? Did you know that most of the animals that do make their own C make between 3000Grams to 35000Grams a day, depending on stress and sickness. Did you know that doctor Linus Pauling also documented this and NEVER claimed that taking 200 miligrams a day would do anything.... The fact is C WILL and has done wonderful things, including lessing and contributing to cancer cures. Did this report take the source of the studies that it compiled into consideration? The Only non-bias study on C that was started and then stopped for no reason was done around the 1980's and to this day no one knows WAY it was not finished. Big pharma builds our medical schools, the FDA GETS PAID for even drug they approve, doctors get incentive pay from pharma companies to push their drugs. Because vitamins are natrually ocurring they can not be patented and therefore Pharma companies can not make that much money on them.. The Chinese and other "old" cultures have used C and other natrual remedies for thousands of years successfully. it's not the vitamins that don't work it's the lack of knowledge of the correct amount to take that keeps it form working. I use to get a cold and hold it for two or three weeks. Now I take 3000 to 15000 of C a day and yes I get colds, but they are over within three days to ten days. AND I get sick much much less. This report is a joke and the lazy author that wrote it shold be ashamed. When you "report" something you are suppose to do YOU OWN research, not spew one report... You Dolt!!!

I take 500 mg of Ester C with dinner almost regularly. On the first day of a head cold, I increase to 1000 mg of Ester C with each meal, plus 500 mg between meals. In most cases, the cold is gone within a day. Beats fighting off a cold for days at a time. It seems to work better for some than others...

I happen to disagree with this article. I take 1,000mgs of Vitamin C daily for years. Everyone around me can catch a cold but not me and if I do, it is very mild and it is gone in 2 or 3 days. I totally believe in Vitamin C.
