Kaelinda, I have been a member of PETA for 15 years. They are not trying to eliminate being guardians to animals. Regarding their campaigns, factory farming, circuses, bull fighting, etc. ??? they should be eliminated. Are you that self-involved that you think you deserve to have these things at a cost of the suffering of other living beings? Gandhi said it best - a society's moral progress is best judged by its treatment of animals. I am not foolish enough to think humans will stop being selfish and allow the ban of meat and leather but society should at least examine how these animals suffer in the process and push to limit the suffering as much as possible. I applaud Ingrid - she is an amazing human being and I am sick of the argument that people should care more for other people - people are corrupt, dishonest and selfish. Show me a dog, a pig or goat that you can say the same about. Animals are selfless, are capable of unconditional love and save human lives all the time. The same week those dolphins were slaughtered mercessly in Japan, a dolphin saved a surfer from a shark. It's disgusting how we treat animals in this world. And how about this, if we were all vegetarian, there would be no such thing as third world starvation. We destroy the land to breed more animals to eat when we could be feeding other countries. If you care so much about humans, think about being selfless so the starving can be fed. Think about the earth we are passing onto our kids and their kids. It???s destroyed by factory farming and the resulting fossil fuel pollution. Think about the kids and how there will be no water for them. Do some research about how much waste is produced by the meat industry. The caring for human beings and animals is connected. You can???t truly have one without the other. Respect for all life is the answer.

      Amen, sister!!!!

PETA has done a lot of good for animals over the last few decades and I hope they will continue. People get upset with PETA, but it's more the underlying: "Kill the messanger" attitude. Before getting upset with PETA, people should really analyze their feelings and place the anger where it belongs....at breeders and puppy mills that produce an overpopulation of dogs and cats that have to be euthanized by the millions at shelters every year. At the general public, that continues to demand cheap meats. At people that still buy fur coats.

And yes, before anyone tells me how to spend my time or tries to dictate which organization is worth of my donation, I sure hope that "you" put YOUR efforts and finances toward a cause YOU feel worth supporting. If anyone is supporting human rights, advocating for children or help to fight domestic violence.....more power to them. But don't tell me what cause is more important, because I know what's important to me.

I'm sure there are many animal groups that have done or not done things we don't agree with. Animal people shouldn???t be polarized. I was disappointed by what happened those dogs and called them when I read about it. The act of those couple of PETA workers were not representative of the whole group. Though I was appalled, those animals were humanely euthanized. I am not going to be put in a position to defend them on that matter because I wasn't there. I can tell you that if you call them, they will explain what happened. I can't remember all the details because it was some time ago. It doesn't take away from what they have accomplished for animals in the last 20 or so years. You can't deny that many animals have been saved because of them. Regarding the cattle, I am not familiar with that case but have you tried calling them to get an explanation? I've gotten upset with them before only to discover I didn't have all the facts and that's usually how these things happen. I am encouraged though that for the most part, the people on this post care about animals. I haven't seen this HBO documentary but I plan to. Maybe Nic, you should check it out too - it might give you a different perspective before you harshly judge Ingrid. I???m just happy that the plight of animals is more and more at the forefront and that we can discuss it like this whether we completely agree or not.

In your diatrabe of the greatness of PETA you never addressed Kaelinda's comment regarding PETA employees being taken to trial for euthanizing dogs and cats they took from shelters. I followed that trial and I am not at all conviced that PETA memebers in general and Ingrid Newkirk specifically have any compassion for animals. Zip, zero, zilch, none. Anyone that can take an innocent animal to kill them in the back of a van and then dump their lifeless bodies in a dumpster behind an establishment should refrain from stating they have compassion for an animal.
If you would like to continue talking about killing bulls, bull fighting, and the in general calous treatment of farm animals then let's talk about PETA's refusal to help the starving cattle in Colorado last year after being asked for help by the governer. I fail to see the compassion in that refusal. Actually I fail to see how you have the right to use any quote of Gandhi regarding the morality of society .
So please read between the lines or stop telling lies either to yourself or to this society about the greatness of PETA. That would be going a long way towards the bettermant of society.
    Nic

Most of us who love animals also care deeply about our human brothers and sisters also -- compassion should knows no end, whether it be for human or animal. I love animals deeply but also love my friends and family and have worked all my life to make life better for human and animal alike, not only in my community, but in the world at large. I truly believe that Chief Joseph said it best, "If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth. " As for William, well for some there is no hope!

I think it needs to be recognized that the statement in the last paragraph regarding forcing ones will upon another pertains to Newkirk as much as it does to anybody else. She has the right to feel the way she does. She does not have the right to coerce others into accepting that hers is the one right way to live.

This from an animal welfare activist of another stripe...

I liked the article. Well written. And I also like the woman.
Everyone has their own views, and to each their own.

William Demuth -- you are weird!

What a charming article to read before Thanksgiving, but it has made me realize that I like this woman. I would like this woman more is she was marinated and stuffed with cornbread, but to each his own.
