Just a decade ago, tiny Croatia was in ruins. Now this star of the Balkans is on track to join the EU.

Comment: The state of 'Macedonia' - as you call it - will not join the E.U. until it shows a more flexible diplomatic stance regarding the name dispute with Greece. The official name of Skopje, according to its U.N. membership and the Interim Accord of 1995, is the 'Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia'. As a result of that, FYROM is a different case than the one of Croatia or Bulgaria. There is a bilateral diplomatic issue. An unsolved issue which should not be ignored. The government of FYROM should show its will to create better relations with Greece and to express an initiative for a common accepted solution on the name-dispute, removing any kind of territorial demands against its neighbour. Otherwise, the way to Brussels obviously becomes a 'no-way'.

Comment: Yes, lets use extremely biased web references to support our agruements (loser) Tito's own generals have openly stated that those figures were drastically over-inflated and the real number is 40-60 thousand. Serbia has a very sour taste in their mouths because they lost Croatia to a democratic vote, then their invasion proved they were no match for the Croatian forces. Now their on the verge of losing Kosovo, and their political aspirations in Bosnia are failing. Serbias' economy is stagnent while while Croatia's is prospering, the bridge that the French bombed in 1993 is still destroyed, which is a sign of the scarecity of money, and Serbia idolizes war criminals like Mladic and the world see's that. Croatia is doing everything right and the Serbs just can't bear to watch the Croatian people ahead.

Comment: 'respect minorities from other Balkan countries': hmmm lets talk about these minoritiess from other countries, you probably meant: those hundreds of thousands of croatian citizens who were ripped of all of their posessions, chased away for good helped by NATO - and guess what: they are now 'minorities from other countries'. This makes me wanna puke: Croatia is the most racist country of ex-yugoslavia and probably in entire Europe. Croatians still cherish the nazi legacy of Hitler's puppet state, nothing but a slaughterhouse for Jews and Serbs from WW II. Good luck Croatia on your road to EU: you are just what EU deserved.

Comment: I visited Croatia 7 years ago and was so impressed during my family vacation. I would return in a heartbeat. The locals were so warm and friendly. The food was amazing, the views breath taking. I never would have considered Croatia to be a contender but I was wrong. This country has made me think differently about alot of things. They are going to set the bar for the areas around them and prove what can be possible. I wish the people of Croatia all the best in life. Your success gives the world Hope.

Comment: I had the pleasure of driving from Germany to Crikvensia where we stayed for a week's vacation. The views were amazing and the people truely wonderful. It is inspirational to see this country be moving toward a common goal and finally gaining sme prosperity after such a harsh past. Like others have stated, it can be an example to other countries in similar situations that it can be done. Lets roll up our sleves and help to lift each other up. Share our ideas and not give up on the possibilities. Croatia is meeting their challenges and they can set the bar for others. What they are doing is not easy but also they are proving it is not impossible so to the other countries, dont give up.

Comment: I'm a Serbian and this news makes me happy because I really don't care where you're from or what language you speak or what color your skin is. I'm happy when any country, impoverished by a tragic wars makes a step in the right direction for the good of its people.

It's the bitter and hopeless individuals who stand for nothing but their stubbornness and what they call "patiriotism" who ruin it for the rest of the people. Such people exist in every country and they don't realize that they're only hurting themselves by being angry at others over nothing. Dirty politics is the root of evil and that leads to wars and sadly there will always be people who are affected by it and who will hate someone or another country. I don't want to say forgive and forget because history cannot be forgotten, but it can be forgiven.

We all want the same thing - happiness and prosperity...for crying out loud lets work together like we mean it.

Comment: .You wrote this: "when will the displaced people of Krajina get their possesions or be compensated for their losses...why doesnt europe make this a priority before allowing a former facist state to join the european union....."...you don't feel any shame to do this? What about 13.000 of dead Croats. Killed by serbs who attach Croatian people and country? Former "facist" as you by the way, incorrectly wrote? What about "chetnics" in WW II? Isn't it a time to stop with stupidities in 21th century?! What then about Germany,Japan,Italy?! Beautiful countries,I like them so much.Try it with Croatia also. Beauty of Balkans.

Comment: I live in Croatia and we have good neighbours like this EuroSerb. After Serbs destroy our country they called us facist even in 21st century.I really don't know why they hate us so much.WW II is ended before 52 years.I really hope Serbia will never enter in europe because open borders with people like them only can bring us evil.

Comment: I have to say that within the region croatia is doing very well and this makes me proud. The underlying reasons mentioned in this article base this on strong infrastructure from sound institutions and i agree with this. Whilst many of the nations to our east such as the serbs, macedonians etc only had universities, hospitals and many other beaurecratic institutions set up with the 20th century croatia's dated back much further due to it being a part of the austro-hungarian and venetian empires. This has instilled within Croat's and slovene's basic fundamental value's which it shares with the rest of western europe.

The view expressed by Euroserb makes me sad, since such indoctrinated and jealous views will not make those nations progress forward any time soon and will not do their neighbours or the continent any good

Comment: Thank God that the war torn country is now making it good. I hope it will continue to be properous and live in harmony with its neighbours.

Comment: One thing that we must remember as Croatia progresses and grows. The Serbs are backward barbarians. They are savage and stupid. We are Croats need to make sure that they are never welcomed back into Croatia again. Let them go to their best friends the Greeks. Croatia does not need them.
