My son is over there and now matter what the government allows the media to tell us, he has still been in the same underwear and socks for 14 days. I wonder how our wonderful government would like to experience that. All we can do is pray that God has control of all of this and "what will be will be" whether we agree or disagree. It makes my heart sad that even in this country we still treat each other with disrespect and hatred. So sad.

Baghdad may be doing better due to the surge, but it will not last. Want proof? Check out last week's BBC story regarding Basra. The Brits formally ceded conterol to the Iraqi army and police. Now, women are being hunted down and killed for walking alone during daylight, wearing hajabs that lack modesty as in not black) or, most shocking of all, wearing lipstick.

The survivors will tell you that these attacks are by the militia. These men are dressed in black, scarves only the eyes uncovered The police and army are AFRAID to investigate. We will never be able to leave.

It sounds like The Wild West.
Cherokees against Apachees.Black Foot against Sitting Bull. Big Father.
Will the Crazy East be finally colonised by the civilised West ?

Don't be fooled by the media. The US army is only in control of Baghdad in Iraq and similarly only Kabul in Afghanistan. The rest of both countries are still under the control of the insurgents. The US army is actually under the mercy of the insurgents as they (US Army)are not being attacked as reported. As also reported by individuals who have been there recently, the present situation both in Kabul and Baghdad is not better. The Republicans are trying to make it look good for the elections. With the current falling of the dollar, the housing loan debacle, end of the Wal Mart era, fewer people going to Starbucks, Katrina, fire in California, negligence to the war vets, increase in oil price, airlines have to merge, and many others, it is not good at all.

We have been at this place before ( Mission accomplished ) and was wrong then. To claim a victory now would be foolish. The mission has not been fulfilled as promised because Iraq cannot govern itself nor can it defend itself without intervention from the US. Making that happen has nothing to do with the success of our troops. In fact our troops have been nothing but successful in taking down insurgents and terrorist since this war began. What has failed in Iraq is there government to create an atmosphere of inclusion by all sides. Only this will once and for all bring peace to Iraq. The commanding General of US forces said this back when the surge began. Iraq is till a very dangerous place and will continue to be so until the Iraqi people decide that enough is enough.

I read this article and one thing jumps out at me. There is no mention of that Iraqi army we have been training thats suppose to be in the thousands. The mission I'm told is not done until the Iraqi's can govern and defend themselves without outside intervention. Did I miss something here?

well im glad u laid it so flat cuz that is precisely the american nature. as u indicated "nothing which is more important than it's own safety is miserable nation and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better nations than itself. Didn't USA go to Afganistan and Iraq to secure it's own safety???

English philosopher, John Stewart Mill (1806-1873) once said, "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things... The decayed and degraded state or moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." No matter who or where you are, you can likely thank the Americans for your freedom to be able to criticize openly without fear of immediate death. Deny it if you must. You're free to do so. And by the way, "you're welcome!"

How dare Newsweek publish good news about Iraq. Did Clinton's people approve this article?

The nerve of this magazine to publish some truth. Don't they know that if good news about our soldiers leaks out that less people will hate America? That if we succeed in Iraq terrorists and dictators around the world might take our threats seriously? We can't have that! America must lose. We need socialism, and if America and democracy wins, then, comrade, the revolution will take much longer.

Sorry, Harry Reid...you can put the surrender monkey white flag away. Sorry, too Murtha, those marines were not guilty, as you swore that they were (without proof other than lies from this magazine) from the floor of Congress.

America's finest are doing a great job. Even an occasional national magazine has to acknowledge that...even if, in their heart of hearts, they want the American troops to lose.

My fear is that Al Qaeda is purposly laying low to make us believe they have quit to qn extent, but this is only because they feel if they can get rid of us, they can take over. This is a possibility as they are very shrewd. It is far too early for any optimism. I want the servicemen and women all home, but I also want anyone in a war anywhere in the world to be home with their families. We will never be a continent of civillized people until this happens. I find it appalling that we go at each other to the death.., like animals with no common sense. Only dipolomacy will help us end th is war.

This is a message to the Federal reserve and the few American billionaries that still bread. It is also an open letter to President Bush: If you do not do something about the falling dollar and soon, very soon, instead of Democracy , we will very soon be exporting coolies in Texas hats, to work in the sewers of the Arabs and of the Chinese!

Concern is of course that peace will not be long lasting. Indeed I pray that the people of Iraq can stay focused so that they may continue to rebuild and build their nation as a united people. Too much bloodshed, loss of life, countless children affected, has happened for the world to allow Iraq to slide back into chaos. What the 'Coalition of the Willing' started, the world united must stand with Iraq United so that in unity, peace, progress and prosperity for the peoples of Iraq will remain, God willing.

Ideology will never be changed or influenced by war. Democracy by definition is the rule of people and never exported.

America is the only country that has the guts to change the hate and death mentality of the middle east that has plagued the world for centuries. Those who expected instant gratification in achieving this goal of democracy have never had to actually work for anything and are spoiled brats. USA troops are the best !!

it's going to stll take years. but, if these people have a free society and prosper with human rights, there will be a lot of pissed off americans. they are all the people who swear this war was for nothing. so, i hope you people are praying for more increased bloodshed. because if it works , you people will be the idiots that you really are.

I did not agree with the Invasion of Iraq. However, it galls me that so many want the troops to fail. Especially since some progress has been made and there is optimism among the Iraquis even if it is a cautious optimism. It is my earnest hope and prayer that it will work so that we can bring our troops home and so that the Iraqui people can have a real future without having to live in fear. I hope we win. for the sake of those who died for freedom that they did not die in vain.

It's about time we hear or read something positive come out of Iraq. I bet the main stream media wont cary or echo this story. We are finally starting to turn the tide on this war. Amazing what can happen with a little patience, hard work and oh yea, sacrafice. Seeing that the Democrats are vested in defeat in Iraq and hanging ther 2008 political hats on it, how are they going to lie their way outta this one. I 'll tell you right now. If they keep this up by the time the election rolls around and things are even better in Iraq. We will have another Republican in the White House. YOu think they cried when they lost the last one. they may implode when they lose the next one.

We may by shear dumb luck win this battle but yet may still lose the "war on terrorism" (totally misleading name). We took our eyes off the ball and opened a second, totally non-essential front in this war. Bush claimed that Iraq was central to the WOT and that bin laden agreed. Of course he did, it served his needs very well to have us invade Iraq and get bled out by this tactical and strategic blunder. The neo-con dream was to have a domino effect in the region by establishing a viable democracy. We could have done that in Afghanistan, but then that did not fit in with the original (2000) plan. But as Newsweek's new political correspondent no doubt advised - if they hand you a lemon (they attack from the wrong country) make lemonade (spin it so the target country is even more dangerous).

"It's hard to believe," says a friend named Fareed, who has also gone and come back over the years to find the situation always worse, "but this time it's really not." Such words are uttered only grudgingly by those such as me, who have been disappointed again and again by Iraq, where a pessimist is merely someone who has had to endure too many optimists."

Although this is a positive article published by a bastion of our mainstream press, the above statement tells you everything you need to know about the general mentality of our mainstream media. Read it closely. If the author has been repeadedly "dissappointed" with things getting worse in Iraq, then why is he "grudgingly admitting" that things are getting better? If his feelings before were of dissappointment, then his attitude now should not be "grudgingly" but "gleefully." A better choice of words would have been "cautiously optimistic," but a self-proclaimed pessimist wouldn't say that.

"Surrounded by too many optimists." Well, I would hope that our people in Iraq are optimistic unlike our defeatest media and liberal political wing, otherwise we are all doomed. Thank God for optimists for there can never be "too many" of them. It is the optimists that perserveres and never falters because he always sees a way.

I know it really pains newsweek and it's ilk to have to report good news. Any good news is good news for the for this country and bad news for the Demo party and the rest of the the socialist.

Ever hear of the phrase" Rocking Chair Grandma"? Their are on their last leg, but sadly enought, their days are numbered. The Bible called this region a sort of Pizza Religion. The conclusion for this region was made long long ago.Moses's Law or the belief that Christ came to complete the Law.

      droopydrawers What?

      • Posted By: sundrips @ 11/18/2007 11:32:25 PM

What madness do you refer too. droopydrawers. The only thing I recall that Rocking Chair Grandma ever did that was note worthy was when she crapped in her pants then sat down in it.

If we use the excuse, ???I thought he had a gun,??? we will suffer an endless list of citizens killed due to reasons that should be unacceptable. I personally believe our uniform police should not be provided the right to carry a firearm at any government level. My reasoning on this matter is simply, if a armed outlaw is confronted by a policeman and the outlaw knew the policeman was unarmed, do you really think the outlaw would fire with intent to kill? I don???t think so and the fact is that of the few nuts that would fire, the resulting deaths would be far fewer that the system we currently apply. Ask yourself this question. If no guns existed anywhere in the USA excepting our military and police force, do you really believe deaths by gun shots would really be reduced from today???s average. I know not.

My experience in the police force proved to me the vast majority of times that the use of authorized guy fire was/is rarely necessary. I also found that the vast majority of policemen are under trained in both the handling of firearms and self defense. Ask yourself this question. You have seen the majority of your local police department cruising your neighborhood and as often as not that policeman you see has a pop belly big enough to trip over and you have to imageine them running forty-feet without running out of oxygen?

The old adage of concluding we need better training for our policemen doesn???t cut it, for thats been the conclusion hundreds of times. Our country cannot be destroyed out of a mere opinion that all citizens are in danger of being shot either by villains or a policeman for that is the first beginning of the first real fear of terrorist.

You have a better idea after considering the fact that the American people have a guaranteed right to the pursuit of happiness. A gun slinging officer of the law is not my idea of place of happiness.
