People, this is a war. We do have an interest in expanding Democracy, but please, we are a country at war. We have troops on the ground involved in battle. Lets support them, our country, and the families of those serving..Put the politics aside and support our military. Would you like to lose respect with other nations, and people in your own country because of political views..We as AMERICANS, need to stand by our country when at war, whether we agree with it or not.

We definetly have a strategic interest, at this point, in seeing Iraq through. If we fail the harm to American power will be catastrophic. For the future of my children, I, along with many other liberals I'm sure, hope we prevail. Any conservative pundit who tells you otherwise is simply after the ratings that come with stoking the fire of political dialogue in this country.

What an excellent and complex article. Muser: I am a Dem. Don't paint us all with the same brush. You don't know what you are talking about.

The basic fact is we would be much farther along if the murderers in Iraq weren't butchering the people to keep them from choosing and living democratically. Al Qaeda, Iranians, Syrians and the death squads have one goal: kick America out because a free Iraq means no chaos, death, and terror. Zarqawhi and Al Zawahiri both said their goal was to foment a civil war. Their version of democracy will be different than ours, and that is fine. It just can't be an Al Qaeda or Iranian backed terror state.

i wounder if they are up to the dancing in the streets AGAIN like when the WTC fell ??

If I could just get a nickel for every conservative that wants to use our military to spread "freedom" throughout the world...

My thoughts? You believe in it that much, join up.

Now we're going to hear from the liberals that it must all be lies I was all for the Iraqi people from the day they proudly showed their blue fingers. To hear that they are able to enjoy their lives and families and children again, although a fragile peace, I hope it is some incentive for them, and us, to carry on. The liberals will say this can't be true.!!! Well.... admitting you are wrong is very brave....... we may have gone about it wrong, but the ends do, in this case, justiy the means.

Your answering the wrong question, TicTock. The question is what way of life they would take. Though I agree it's much better at this point, for many reasons - strategic, human rights, etc - to see things through in Iraq, our goal should be self determination for Iraq. If that includes something vastly different from our way of life, our respect for liberty must allow them to make that choice.

Now the Congress should take notice, the one's that are supposed to be rallying behind our troops, however they are only tuned into Failure. There should be a Bench where we could place ineffective Politicians like Harry Ried and Nancy Pellosi.

Let's look at where we're at, we have a Congress that is ineffective and inconsiderate of those having made the ultimate sacrifice and the Loved One's they have left behind. The time has come for the politicians in congress to become Legislators, give these men and women the tools they need. As they bicker and nit pick at the funding our troops so desperately need, they just fuel the enemy and their propaganda portfolio.

Now let's look at those in Hollywood that have all the answers, they too are irresponsible. Sean Penn for one is one that has little or no respect for our troops. I guess he's a good actor, because he couldn't possibly dealing with the real world or he'd come to the realization of how degrading it is for him to speak out against them. Now we have Whoopi Goldberg on the View, at least she is willing to say She disagrees with the President and though she does, she still suppports out troops. I for one disagree with why we are in Iraq, but I do realize we cannot leave until we get right.

Iraqi Politicians, you had better get it together and soon, the American People are running out of patience with your inability to Govern.....We came, We liberated, now You and only You can prove wi have not lost all the Fine Men and Women that have given their lives so you all could have the chance to succeed.

GOOD JOB Ganeral Petraeus and the United States Military Men and Women !

Some of you can gripe all you want, but let's face it, a stable Iraq is good for all of us. I'm not crazy about how we got into this war either, but the middle-east is a hell-hole when it comes to human rights and to suggest 4,000 troops have died in vain, is not only insensitive, it's inaccurate.
People talk of how ridiculous it is to impose our values on the people of Iraq. Is it? I'll take our way-of-life over thiers any day. Iraq was a God-forsaken place before we got there. Don't let your hate for Bush result in hate for success in Iraq.

im writing this in response to leodelaney.. iraq is a majority shiite country so why would the population overthrow a shiite-led government? i agree we should bring our troops home and let the iraqis deal with their own problems but i dont think the shiite led-government that is in power now will collapse when we leave.. i think if we leave their government will have a chance to run things they want to it run.. i think we are causing un-intended consequences by our actions in iraq. if we leave i believe that most of the violence would drop. look at basra.. once the british left the city center the violence dropped off considerably.. basically if we leave things will get even better

Thank you, Rod for the balanced story highlighting the progress being acheived in Bagdad. Hopefully this is truly a turn for a more stabilized Iraq.

Tell it like it is Rod....This has been a slow, long, painful process and its good to see the tree finally bear some fruit. I expect more in the future. Thousands of CF and millions of Iraqis moving in the same direction can only lead to good things. Good bless the CF for all the hardwork they do. They are all heros. :)

Thank you for finally showing that things ARE getting better and not focusing solely on the negative. Thank you to our troops for your service. I pray that you all come home safely. I commend the people of Iraq for their bravery and drive.
