As a veteran magazine journalist and author I'm appalled that Newsweek would hire Karl Rove to write a column. This is the journalistic equivalent of turning the asylum over to a prominent inmate..Sure enough, Rove calls on Republican candiates to speak to issues when he insisted in previous campaigns that GOP candidates avoid issues sucxh as paychecks and health care and stick to values, where the dueces are wild.

  • Posted By: tiredofpoliticsasusualbydems @ 11/21/2007 2:01:03 PM

Remarkable! A former advisor to Presidential candidates writes an op-ed piece at least ostensibly advising potential Repbulican candidates what they need to do to defeat the Democratic front runner. From a strictly logical point of view one would expect two reactions: Most of all from Republicans, discussing the recommendations and either agreeing or disagreeing with them, or less from Democrats, pointing out Mrs. Clinton's strengths and the faults of Mr. Rove's recommendatons. And what did happen? Republicans largely quiet---makes one think about the readership of Newsweek doesn't it; and Democrats almost exclusively attack the messenger, not the message.

I suggest you will attract more flies with honey than with vinegar! Try working on Mrs. Clinton's qualifications and her policies on major issues. Mr. Rove is not running for office, and as far as I know he isn't in the employ of anyone who is.

I wonder what Newsweek, Mr. Rove and the Republican strategists guiding the various campaigns learned from this outburst of ad hominem attacks? That there is an element in the Democratic party that can be easily inflamed and thus reflect badly on the middle of the road and independent voters?????? Makes one think, doesn't it.

I think the republicans are quiet because they feel used and disgraced. I also think a lot of them are now Democrats. Bye bye and good riddance to the "Conservative Revival". Thanks Dubya, truly no one could have done it better.

repuglitards are really quiet right now because most people have self respect and self awarness, and the decent human beings who were once registered repuglitard are no longer registered repuglitard.

. only the most depraved and simpleminded people will admit to being repuglitards today

to make a long story short, the repuglitards don't make much noise today cuz there ain't that many repuglitards left in the world today

to make a long story short

        • Posted By: tiredofpoliticsasusualbydems @ 11/23/2007 6:52:17 PM

I note that you continue to talk about respect but use disrespectful terms; that you avoid talking about the specific issues I raised, and instead make unsubstantiated generalizations, which amount more or less to wishful thinking on your part.

Why not talk about Mrs. Clinton's qualifications as well as her position on the issues? At least tell us why you don't want to discuss those.

A SIMPLE POLITE AND CONCLUSIVE HOPEFULLY HELPFUL SUGGESTION TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE : IT IS OBSERVBED THAT READERS HAVE PLACED THEIR INDINATION AND ALSO SGGESTED TO YOU IN THE INTEREST OF THIS HIGHLY ESTEEMED MAGAZINE THAT IS READ OVER THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH AND BREADTH OF THE WORLD NOT TO POLUTE THEIR FAIR MENTAL THINKING BY ALLOWING A CRIMINAL TO WRITE AND SUGGEST WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY FROM SELECTING THE RIGHT PERSON IN THE FORTH COMMING ELECTION. AS HE HAD ALREADY DONE IRREPAIRABLE DAMAGE TO THE NATION, AND HAD BEEN FOUND GUILTY OF THE OFFENCE. THEY THE READERS MENTIONED THAT THEY FAIL TO UNDERSTAND HOW A WRONG HEADED CRIMINAL COULD BE APPOINTED AS A COLUMNIST, THAT TOO IN OUR PROFOUNDLY LOVED NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE. WHATEVER MAY BE YOUR CONSIDERATION OF APPOINTING HIM THEY ADDED THAT INUMERABLE READERS OF THE MAZGAZINE ALL OVER THE WORLD STRONGLY PROTEST IN REGARD TO A DANGEROUS INDICTED AND CONVICTED WELKNOWN CRIMINALS ASSOCIATION WITH THIS MAGAZINE. PLEASE TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION AGAINST THE INCUMBENT "ROVE THE TRAITOR" SO THAT HE NEVER APPEARS WITH HIS UNGLY FACE IN FRONT OF THE READERS WITH ANY ARTICAL IN FUTURE. THANKS THIS FOR YOU KIND PERUSAL AND IMMEDIATE ACTION.

      Try spell check!

      • Posted By: NeilSagan @ 11/21/2007 12:40:56 PM

We do not know why ROVE was not indicted in the obstruction of Justice case when White House operatives disclosed the identity of a covert CIA Agent. We do know ROVE called Tweety - Chris Matthews - to declare "Valarie Plame is fair game." That sure spells it out pretty clearly to me.

As a CIA agent, Plame's identity is supposed to be protected under the laws of our country from nare do wells like Karl Rove and Scooter Libby and, sadly but true, Dick Cheney. Now we learn from Scott McClellan that George Bush was involved in reassuring Scott that neither Libby or Rove leaked Plame's identity, which we know is untrue. Rove and Libby did leak Plame's identity as did Armitage and that spells conspiracy, and if you listened to the closing argument in the trial, you'd have heard Patrick Fitzgerald tell you that Dick Cheney was running the thing. Impeach Cheney. Try Rove for treason.

        • Posted By: tiredofpoliticsasusualbydems @ 11/23/2007 6:49:14 PM

Valerie Plame's identity as a COVERT CIA agent is protected. I know of no evidence that has made it to the public forums that established unequivocally that she was a covert agent at the time that Armitage made the comments to Novak and Novak wrote th article. Can you show all of us where there is that info in t he public domain. Lacking that, a critical reader must assume that she was not a covert agent.

Welcome to Newseek, Mr. Rove. You will be in the lion's den, but as Daniel survived, you will too. To have you as a contributor to Newsweek is a breath of fresh air, indeed. Now we don't have to exclusively read the left-wing loonies' rantings. Makes me want to renew my subscription to Newsweek.

Do me a favor and forget about RON PAUL ! All you "free loaders out there that think he will do away with taxes. You will always have to pay taxes, OKAY ! Learn to live with it. RON PAUL is a BOY SCOUT !
and a far as the fight in Iraq goes. FINISH THE JOB ! There's a new concept for you free loaders. "FINISH THE JOB" But everyone else, don't worry. RON PAUL won't even be in the top 4.

    • Posted By: madest @ 11/22/2007 6:13:34 PM

First of all the job is finished in Iraq. No WMD's no ties to 9/11 and the bonus of toppling Saddam we could claim victory and go back to looking for Osama bin Laden (which is what we shoulda been doing in the first place). Secondly, Ron Paul supporters are smart enough to know that their candidate would never have support in congress to shutter the IRS or any department for that matter. Ron Paul is looked upon as a reset switch in a way. Imagine 4 years worth of vetoes and all the money we would save. Our strength would again be our leadership not our military strength. Ron Paul has cross-over appeal and his grass roots fund raising proves it. Run Ron Run.

I've had a Newsweek magazine subscription for about 5 years now and especially enjoyed Anna Quindlin's "The Last Word", found most of Fareed Zakaria's essays well thought out / knowlegeable and in general I've felt that most Newsweek 's stories were probably as close to the factual news as we can get in a major U.S. news media these days, but upon learning that Karl Rove had become a contributing writer it took me about 2 minutes to reach the phone and cancel my Newsweek subscription. (Thank goodness for Newsweeks 24/7 customer service) I am just too repulsed by any sleaze such as Karl Rove and really sorry to see Newsweek jion the ranks of the National Inquirer or the New York Post. I wonder how soon Ann Coulter and Rush Limbuagh will appear on Newsweeks pages? Charlie - St. Augustine, FL

once again,Carl demonstrates his understanding of todays politics. He leaves the weak kneeded Liberials laying in the mud screaming like little girls. it brings me much joy to see Newsweek bring a voice of reason and truth to a world where irrational thought and mere accusation reins. Good work , Carl.

Rove's comment about the mirror shows the how his min works. Clearly the way he starts the story implys that Senator Clinton is vaine enough to have the mirror put in her office, but does not say she had it installed . Then he gives her a dig for not having a sense of humor , All the time showing what a modest self-effacing person he is.

I haven't read this article and I never will read anything written but Karl Rove, I can't believe Newsweek has hired a person of his character and moral values to join Newsweek. This man has ties to fraudulent voting in many states including presidential elections, outted a CIA operative, and basically destroyed the constitution. I think Newsweek should drop him from you payroll.

    • Posted By: ArcherB @ 11/20/2007 11:32:17 AM

Richard Lee Armitage outed Valerie Plame, not Karl Rove. By blaming Rove, you are either proving that you are completely ignorant or a liar. That single statement of yours invalidates your entire post.

      • Posted By: freepatriot @ 11/22/2007 12:42:06 AM

prior disclosure of classified information does NOT extinguish classified status

so what if richard armatige leaked to bob woodward

that has nothing to do with the fact that kkkarl rove leaked the same information to scott cooper

one leak does not affect the othwer leak

        both are criminal acts

you ought to read the US Code and the Standard Form - 312 some time

then you wouldln't be on the innertubes proving your ignorance to the world

How much do you have to hate America to hire this guy? It must be alot. I cant believe greed and short term benefits now override patriotism and loving your country. It's a shame people hate this country so much and could care less about it, by hiring this hate mongerer.

Whatever happened to America standing together?

I guess its loss to short term gains and the misdirecting of the ignorant.

Congratulations Newsweek for becoming the National Enquirer.

I hope Obama gets the Democratic nomination. He is authentic and much more of a conviction politician. Hillary is so calculated and not real. Obama will need top combat her perceived greater experience. He should pick Biden as his running mate.....

What slur--since when is someones birth name a slur?...and is everyone who opposes Barak Hussein Obama a racist? Get real.....he is a fine person and a good man but he cannot win. If Barak uses the race card he would be no better than if Hillary used the gender card or the GOP using the "you'll be blown up" card! PS.....I am an independent and like it that way! PS--Barak was not in Senate to vote against the war!

Charlie Rose announced his guest tonight Karl Rove as, Newsweek columnist. Karl Rove. Newsweek is the tool of the unindicted co-conspiritors desire to re-habilitate his image.

    Let's name the scandals Rove was in the middle of and we'll ignore his whisper campaign in South Carolina feeding on the racial fears;
    the Abramoff scandal,
    US Attorney Purge scandal,
    lost White House email scandal,
    wholesale politicization of government scandal.
And don't forget who was put in charge of rebuilding New Orleans.

    Rove is a lying scumbag.

  • Posted By: madest @ 11/21/2007 5:43:46 PM

Hard to believe almost 7 years since clinton left office and Republicans still seethe over his presidency. Equally hard to believe these same people think Bush is a conservative. What is conservative about spending like Emelda Marcos at a shoe store? Or bombing countries to be like us? Or spying on Americans without a court order? Or torturing? The Republican party has become a party of lies, deceit, treason and hate. There's nothing about their party to be proud of. So all they can do is b*tch about Hillary. Rather sad don't ya think?

  • Posted By: NeilSagan @ 11/21/2007 1:02:04 PM

The previous comment is not known to be true, too bad for Karl Rove, now he knows what it feels like to be on the other end of a smear campaign. ha ha ha slimebag.

I hear Charles Manson is looking for a column in a national magazine to rehabilitate his image. If he calls me for suggestions, I'll recommend Newsweek.

    • Posted By: thrasher32 @ 11/21/2007 2:55:51 PM

Yeah, if Rove can write in Newsweek, why not Manson, or perhaps Kim Jong IL would like to say a few words....
