Comment: I too would not have renewed had I known Karl Rove would be a contributor. I'm holding an offer to add a year to my subscription. No way, unless Newsweek changes its mind about Rove.

Comment: why did you invite karl rove to write for newsweek? everything he has to say is a dirty lie. he helped "the bush crime family" in their coup to destroy the united states. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they can torture me, but they can't stop me from telling the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Posted By: DanaBacher @ 12/10/2007 1:16:33 PM

Comment: I have to agree with the others. I would not have renewed my subscription if I knew Rove was on board and I will likely not renew it in the future. I think using Stephanopoulos as an example of a similarly controversial figure is ridiculous. It's a whole different sort of controversary when it includes possible indictments and acts of treason. I respect Newsweek and its desire to offer a spectrum of thought, George Will comes to mind. However, your providing Rove with a platform legitimizes his actions and crosses a line that is unacceptable. Shame on you Newsweek for your lack of good judgement.

Comment: I just renewed my subscription to Newsweek - BEFORE I knew about the decision to bring Rove on board. I would never have chosen to continue my subscription had I known beforehand. Please reconsider using his rhetoric and lies in your magazine unless you want to become a tabloid rather than a news source. Rove should never be given a platform to spread his lies and misinformation. His absurd personal attacks always steer the conversation away from the actual issues at hand. For instance, ask him about the growing deficit and he'll reply that the questioner is unChristian. As him about Iraq, he'll claim you are unpatriotic. Ask him about health care and he'll call Democrats socialists instead of answering the question. PLEASE reconsider your decision so that I won't have to reconsider my subscription.

Comment: Add me to the long list. I just cancelled my subscription. Mr. Rove is a liar and should be convicted of treason, not given a forum to spread more lies. Newsweek and Mr. Meacham should be ashamed of themselves.

Comment: Mr Meacham, HAVE YOU NO DECENCY SIR? I just sent the following comment to the Subscription Department as I canceled my subscription: I have subscribed to Newsweek for over 40 years, and have enjoyed it immensely. However, hiring Karl Rove, the "Architect" of an immoral, arrogant, incompetent, and divisive Administration which chooses to subordinate individual rights at home and conduct war-mongering abroad is something I will not condone.
Since we just renewed on 3 December for another year, please refund my full subscription price.

Comment: Add me to the list of your subscribers who will not be resubscribing due to your decision to give Rove a platform. No need to add to the comments about Rove, but I will say this is the first time I've felt compelled to cancel a subscription because of editorial policy. Just unbelievable!

Comment: This year I decided to send the gift of a Newsweek subscription to friends. They'll think I am out of my mind when they get the next issue with the meanderings of the devil incarnate. I am so embarrassed.

Comment: When I first heard about Newsweek hiring Karl Rove, I thought there had to be some mistake. After all, the man only recently left his job at the White House, and there are some active congressional investigations involving him; Newsweek should still be reporting on those investigations. Then I remembered that Newsweek is owned by the Washington Post Company, and last year the Washington Post hired Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson to write for the editorial page only a few months after he left the administration. Thus do standards fall. I think it's poor journalistic practice for a publication to so quickly hire someone whose actions were the subject of dozens, if not hundreds, of news stories in its pages--and whose actions will likely be further investigated and reported on in the near future. I hope Newsweek will reconsider its decision. If not, the page containing Rove's column will fit nicely in the bottom of my birdcage.

Comment: Karl Rove!?!! You're kidding, right? The greatest Machiavelli this country has ever seen -- a master manipulator of the media, and you're providing him a forum for further self aggrandizing and the opportunity for more revisionist history!!! You are kidding, right?

Comment: A long-time subscriber to Newsweek over all the other weekly newsmagazines because of its fairness, I am appalled that you chose to sign on Karl Rove as an "occasional contributor". Rove has nothing to contribute that a decent person would want to read. And putting Moulitsas on as a deodorant doesn't begin to hide the smell. I don't want to cancel my subscription of many years, so please tell us you have changed your mind.

  • Posted By: Printery @ 11/30/2007 6:03:43 AM

Comment: Thanks for having Mr. Rove so we can have a differente view. I admire your mind and hope never fail you. But when you mention "The first book I can remember holding???holding, not reading???was a copy of "Treasure Island," which had been inscribed to me by an overly enthusiastic grandfather on the occasion of my turning a month old" that at the age of 30 days you remember the book you were holding in your hand is a little bit odd, at least you did not say that you read it in your first 60 to 90 days of age.

Comment: Please reconsider your decision to allow Karl Rove to appear in Newsweek as a guest commentator. I appreciate reading all sides of the issues, but this man is either the most poker-faced liar I have ever seen or is completely insane. I cancelled my Time subscription after they made George Bush the person of the year a few years back and have really enjoyed my subscription to Newsweek since then. Please reconsider.

  • Posted By: anniejoyce @ 11/28/2007 11:27:02 PM

Comment: This man maliciously exposed the identity of a CIA agent for political gain and in retaliation for someone not towing the Bush administration's line. And now you want to use this traitor to sell magazines. You can't be serious. I've already cancelled my subscription. Shame on you.

Comment: What in the heck in wrong with Newsweek? Karl Rove? weren't A. Coulter or R. Limbaugh available? Did you see todays article on Rove's revisionist history on the run-up to the Iraq/Bush war? Can't you get a conservative with a modicum of objectivity, like David Brooks or even that clown R. Novack? Goodby Newsweek, hello Times. GET RID OF THAT SCUM-BAG!!

Comment: I join the list of those who will no longer buy your mag. or support your advertisers as a result of your hiring Rove. It's a bad, almost self-destructive move on your part. There are plenty of honest potential columnists that you could have hired. Most of whom I would disagree with but respect their opinion. You really need to get this message from the public: we are not going to sit back and let you support lies and propaganda.

Comment: Newsweek is the only weekly news magazine I read on a regular basis, but after hearing that Karl Rove
will be an occasional columnist, I will no longer read or subscribe to your magazine. Mr. Rove is like a
clever high school or college debater, who seeks to win an argument by dissembling, never by dealing
with facts. I remember those debaters from my own high school days. Winning an argument is not the same as telling the truth and giving him a forum is like prepetuating a lie.

Comment: I have just read the opinion article by Markos Moulitsas and found his accusation regarding mining deaths too hard to swallow. So I checked the U.S. Dept. of Labor to see if in fact the number of mining deaths has increased due to gutting of the effectiveness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration by Pres. Bush as stated by Mr. Moulitsas. I found just the opposite. The number of mine deaths in the US has decreased since 2001. This can be checked at the US Dept. of Labor website. Mr. Moulitsas, what's up with that?

Comment: I also will cancel my subscription. It is one thing to try an add to the political conversation by the addition of extreme conservative and liberal commentators, a thing I would truly support for many reasons. But Karl Rove? He's obviously guilty of treason and one of the people responsible for the terrible, selfish, partisan state of this country. Newsweek adding Rove a special columnist only validates his ludicrous view of the country and the world.
    Adios Newsweek!

    Comment: Mr. Meacham:

Your acceptance of Karl Rove as a contributor to Newsweek could very conceivably turn out to be your worst career decision! Without a tinge of exaggeration, Rove is the current American version of Joseph Goebbels. And, I challenge you to disprove this. Lies, distortions, half-truths, muck, insults - these are not the hallmarks of an honest essayist and opinion-maker. Your loss of journalistic credibility will far exceed your reader losses. Contemplating your real motives, I suspect, will remain your little secret.

I WAS A LONG TIME SUBSCRIBER. I CANCELLED MY SUBSCRIPTION ON TUESDAY WHEN NEWSWEEK WITH ROVE'S NAME AT THE TOP CAME IN THE MAIL!

  • Posted By: becca1099 @ 11/21/2007 3:48:19 PM

    Comment: Dear Mr. Meacham,
I have always felt a great deal of respect for you. Of course, in comparison to the sad state of affairs regarding the news media, that's not necessarily a great compliment. But now, after your hiring of Karl Rove, Newsweek will never be in my home again. Why in the world would a respectable news magazine even consider hiring a liar and a crook. He is one of the reasons this great country of ours has lost all credibility and/or respect in the world. Everyone knows this. Sooner or later, thanks to the media it will no doubt be later, Rove will be found guilty of war crimes, lying to federal prosecutors - all of it - more than we, the people, could ever imagine. I'm totally bewildered by your decision. Newsweek will never be on my coffee table again. My heavens, even Larry Flynt wouldn't hire this low-life. How could you???

  • Posted By: mastaire @ 11/21/2007 12:01:24 PM

    Comment: Mr Meacham,

How could you have hired Karl Rove to be a contributor? What in the world were you thinking? As far as I am concerned and probably most of America he hasn't one positive thing to contribute. I do agree that debate is a healthy thing but not from one who lies, is deceitful, secretive, and who also thinks he is above the law. Rove is just plain evil. As far as I am concerned, in light of the latest acquisations from Scott McClellan he should be thrown in jail for a long time in a maximum security prison. What scum!

Unless he's booted, I will cancel my subscription. It's too bad because I have been reading Newsweek for plus 20 years.

What a black mark on Newsweek

Unless he's booted, I will cancel my subscription and I have been a subscriber for over 20 years.

    Comment: Dear Mr Meacham,
I am aghast at the thought that you have hired Karl Rove to be a contributor. What in the world are you thinking? Have you gone mad or just forgotten how important journalism is to democracy? There is a tremendous difference between bringing in people who are critical players to give readers a unique insight and those who partake in the kind of tactics that Mr. Rove has a reputation of practicing. You put the American public and the future of our nation at risk when you allow a propagandist such as Mr. Rove the privilege of holding a position in the news media. What???s next? Bringing in a terrorist to give insights into that world and gang members to shed insight on their world by writing occasional columns? Of course there is a place for the information you seek, but in an interview situation, not at the helm where he can continue to influence with the propaganda style of information he has used throughout his tenure at the White House.

Just look at the new accusations by Scott McClellan, ???"I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice president, the president's chief of staff, and the president himself."

Doesn???t that tell us that Mr. Rove will avoid truth if it fits his purpose? Why would he be any different as a contributor to your publication? Shame on you.

Comment: Newsweek's employment of Karl Rove results in this: No Newsweek in our home, no Newsweek on
our computer screen, ZERO Newsweek anywhere in our lives. You are an insult to decent, law-
    abiding Americans!

  • Posted By: daniel shapiro @ 11/20/2007 12:43:44 AM

Comment: Tell you what...I'll read Newsweeek again when appended to Karl Rove's commentary is a print-out of his White house e-mails. That way we can judge him for who he really is; a lying, evil modern Machiavelli with a psych profile that would make a first year pyschology student run from him in fear.

  • Posted By: birktax @ 11/19/2007 7:15:17 PM

Comment: Having read a number of the comments below, I heartily agree with their detail and sentiment. Karl Rove represents the scummiest, dirty-tricks adviser in the history of the Presidency. Newsweek, you can either have me as an ongoing reader / subscriber or you can print the lies and deceit of Karl Rove, but you CAN'T have both.

  • Posted By: prayingfordemocracy @ 11/19/2007 10:44:26 AM

Comment: Rove is a talented amoral Machiavellian who makes no "authentic" contribution to any policy debate. Moulitsas is a talented pragmatic ideologue. It sickens me that Newsweek (and others) cannot smell the difference. Lacking the talent of either, all I can do is promise not to renew my subscription.

  • Posted By: bmpress @ 11/19/2007 9:12:04 AM

Comment: It is time to switch to Time or US News magazines. Not a nickel to pay to Rove!!!

  • Posted By: Nedudgi @ 11/19/2007 12:35:57 AM

Comment: I sent a similarly disappointed comment like the ones before me in e-mail. It is beyond me why would Newsweek decide to give Rove an outlet in a reputable publication. He is probably the biggest crook among all the political operators alive today. He brought irreparable harm to this nation. Why on earth did you decide to enable him to continue doing harm?

  • Posted By: GeorgiaGirl @ 11/18/2007 9:38:55 PM

Comment: I can't fathom why Newsweek would want to hire someone who has done as much harm to this country as Karl Rove. As far as I can tell, he is a sociopath who has no conscience and no sense of limits when it comes to defeating an opponent. I understand why Hillary Clinton did not laugh at him and his little "joke" about the mirror: there is absolutely nothing funny about Karl Rove. My Newsweek subscription is up soon, and I won't be renewing. I can read George Will and other conservative writers, but Karl Rove is beyond the pale.

  • Posted By: jagblue @ 11/18/2007 11:28:24 AM

Comment: Why has Newsweek chosen to give a forum to a man who reprsents low ethical standards for both public service and how to conduct elections. Karl Rove aided and abetted tactics to spread untrue, ugly rumors against an American war hero. Karl Rove aided and abetted the outing of a CIA agent. He has a low ethical threshold. Why did Newsweek put this man on who has undermined the American democratic process. Oh right, Newsweek was the same publication which suppressed knowledge, no lied about, knowing the identity of Anonymous author - Joe Klein - and assisted Klein in personally attacking an individual who correctly identified him as the author by analyzing the writing. Mr Meacham I like you. You are not as ethicaally challenged as Evan Thomas. But wahy.

  • Posted By: jagblue @ 11/18/2007 11:23:03 AM

Comment: Why has Newsweek given a forum to man who has been implicated in subverting the electoral process in the United States. Mr. Rove has repeatedly demonstrated that he operates at a low ethical threshold in the manner in which conducts campaigns. He has supported groups who have lied and smeared political opponents. He has aided and abetted the outing of a CIA agent -- the man has been destructive to highest ideals of American democracy. And Newsweek decides he should be given a forum. Of course this is the same publication that aided and abetted a former columnist to smear and denounce an individual who correctly identified him an anonymous author of a Clintonesque book when Newsweek knew beter. I am disappointed but I guess I should not be.
