Catholics are very diverse in their thinking, but hold onto fundamental values very strongly. Those two important values are to uphold the family and to promote justice through respect for human dignity. The church stands it's ground on pro-life as part of human dignity, however, we have a president who is pro-life and the same catholics helped get him elected. Yes, you do have to have the Catholic vote behind you. The Catholic church is growing rapidly since the 'house cleaning' of fallen priests. I think the real issue Giulani is going to have to face is whether he has a track record for leadership at the family level. This is going to become an extreemly important issue in future elections. Bush can keep his family together. Lets face it, Clinton can, too. Catholics are going to look at the leadership quality of the candidates. Whether they can problem solve adequetlely and whether they have wholesome values. Catholics care about actions.

I still wonder how someone that calls himself a roman catholic support abortion? Rudy and any other candidate that supports abortion should not be considered by true catholics and Christians at large. I would not want to go into the debate on abortion because we all have concience and that I know tells us the truth even if we do not want to hear that. Kenneth Okonkwo - Lagos, Nigeria

Catholics are diverse in thinking, however, Catholics care about respect for human dignity. They will vote for the acts of promoting respect for human dignity. President Bush is pro-life, but congress and America disagrees with him on that issue currently. The same Catholics will be voting in '08 that voted in the last election. Currently, the Catholic Church is growing in vast numbers with people converting from many protestant churches. I think this is more of an indication that morality and striving for integrity is going to become a larger issue in the future. The Christian Catholics are family oriented. This might prove a difficult race for Guliani based on his track record with women. It doesn't seem that he cares much about the family unit and is able to adjust himself as a leader in that respect.

Rudy's stance on abortion is not why I will not vote for him. I won't vote for any candidate who supports the folly in Iraq. I am a volunteer with my parish emergency services program. I know how much the demand on our parish food bank is growing. Peace and economic justice issues will be my focus when I vote. I'll be reviewing only the Democratic candidates. There isn't a Republican I could seriously consider. I'm not sure how Pew defines "traditional Catholic". I'm a cradle Catholic, graduate of Catholic schools, associate member of a Dominican Community and worked in religious social services until my retirement two years ago. My personal politicacl views have swung rather sharply to the left and I find that to be the case with most of the Catholics I encounter at my parish.

Rudy Guliani's pro-choice stance on abortion is not why I will not vote for him. It is his arrogance and his riding on the coattails of 9/11 that turn me off. He just happened to be the mayor of New York at the time. I would think and hope any mayor would have stepped up to the plate. His treatment of his family during his divorce shows the man has not an ounce of common decency in his bones. I suppose his ties to Bernard Kerik also run through my mind. I think alot of people forget that many many New Yorkers did not like the man prior to 9/11.

    Pope Trumpets Sunday Continued...

If the papacy is allowed to have the power of the state to enforce her dogma, we will have a repeat of the atrocities of the middle/dark ages when millions of people were murdered by this "church" for not bending the knee to her false teachings. The whore of Revelation showed her fangs, tore her enemies to shreds and cleverly covered up her crimes. All this is documented in many books, including CATHOLIC TERROR TODAY, by Avro Manhattan, the book the following quotes were taken from.

"The non-Catholic population of Catholic Croatia (Yugoslavia) were given two basic alternatives: conversion or death. Their church buildings were closed, parish documents destroyed, ecclesiastical buildings burned down, Orthodox worshippers very often were arrested inside their own churches, and kept there or in local halls while awaiting their fate: forced conversion, concentration camps or execution. Their survival, more often than not, depended upon the whim of the Ustachi Commandants and of the Catholic Padres (priests) accompanying them."

Many of our young people have no concept of what an inquisition is. It is when a religious force moves in with such power, deception, and cruelty that it destroys everything standing in its way. These are harsh words, but you must remember that the Roman Catholics believe with all their heart that their church is the church of Jesus Christ. They believe the pope is the vicar, or the representative, of Jesus Christ on this earth. There is a teaching within the Roman Catholic structure called the temporal power. Temporal power means that the pope should control every person on the face of this globe, their property and their religion. The Jesuits are pushing for this temporal power which means a world-wide dictator. They believe this is the only way to go, and those who oppose them are the enemies of the gospel.

"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come (the return of Christ), except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exaltheth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God." 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4

"If protestants would follow the Bible, they should worship God on the Sabbath Day. In keeping the Sunday they are following a law of the Catholic Church."--Albert Smith, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, replying for the cardinal in a letter of Feb. 10, 1920.

"But in vain they do worship me, teaching for the doctrines the commandments of men." Matthew 15:9

"Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey? Romans 6:16

Rudy Guliani's pro-choice stance has no bearing on why i will never vote for him. It is is air of arrogance and his warhawk mantra that has me turned off. His riding on the coattails of 9/11 is a total sham. He just happen to be the mayor of New York at the time. i would think any mayor would have stepped up top the plate. Up until then he was not very well liked in New Yor City. I suppose his connections to Bernard Kerik have some bearing on my thoughts too. I am telling you where there is smoke there is fire. The man to me is devoid of any real Presidential presence.

    FYI

Pope: Sunday Worship a "Necessity" For All
    September 17, 2007 | From theTrumpet.com

Pope Benedict XVI says your life depends upon worshiping on Sunday.

"Sine dominico non possumus!" "Without Sunday [worship] we cannot live!" Pope Benedict xvi declared during a mass on September 9 at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

Speaking on the final day of his three-day visit to Austria, the German pope voiced a strong call for Christians to revive Sunday keeping as an all-important religious practice.

"Give the soul its Sunday, give Sunday its soul," he chanted before a rain-soaked crowd of 40,000.

Benedict said that Sunday, which he stated has its origin as "the day of the dawning of creation," was "also the church's weekly feast of creation."

Warning against the evils of allowing Sunday to become just a part of the weekend, the pope said people needed to have a spiritual focus during the first day of the week, or else leisure time would just become wasted time.

Sunday worship, he warned, was not just a "precept" to be casually adhered to, but a "necessity" for all people.

In the opening greeting, the archbishop of Vienna said a movement in Austria had been initiated to protect "Sunday from tendencies to empty [it] of its meaning."

In Austria, most businesses are restricted from operating on Sunday. However, some business groups are pressuring the government to be allowed to open, a move Roman Catholic groups vehemently oppose.

During Benedict's trip to Austria, he called for Europe to look to its Christian roots, to trust in God and to defend traditional values.

The pope has been very vocal about Europe's Christian-or Catholic-roots, and is pushing to have them included in the European Constitution. Although laws concerning Sunday worship are currently determined by individual nations, look for the European Union to eventually gain jurisdiction over the work week-which is one big reason the Catholic Church is so intimately involved with the evolution of the EU. Hmmm. Time to enter all the churches (and St. Patrick's Cathedral) onto the property tax rolls. Looks like we've found a way to pay for all those tax cuts!

the United States Constitution is found in Article VI, section 3, and states that:

??? ...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. ???
This clause immediately follows one requiring al... to take an oath of support to the Constitution.

Can someone point out to me where the Pope is mentioned...I must have missed that part of US Constitution 101

For being such a "follower of Jesus Christ", you have yet to be a real Christian. Once you have walked a mile in a woman's shoes, only then can you begin to tell me what I can and cannot do with my body. Christians... always the first to throw a stone, while hiding inside their glass house.

    • Posted By: hoopes_az @ 11/21/2007 10:07:50 AM

You honor Christians ("you have yet to be a real Christian", i.e., a real Christian has empathy) and villify Christians all in the same post. To stereotype a group, just as you do with Christians, is the ultimate throw of a stone. Isn't there any other response other than an attack at a group who holds different views? We will likely never agree on the issue of abortion, but it would be nice to have dialog without personal attacks and insults.

Who will be the next President? Republican or Democrat? Clinton and Obama supports pro abortion 100%. if abortion is the only gauge, we cannot vote for them. Rudy supports abortion but his view is not 100%. He can change. Who are you going to choose? Not vote? Then you just welcome President Clinton or President Obama.

I find it particularly interesting that according to the statistics presented in this article that while 63% of White Catholics are Pro-Life another 63% also have a favorable view of the mayor.

I think we tend to look at Catholics and other groups (teachers, veterans, union workers, senior citizens) as having a singular voice and stovepipe them as such when in reality they all have individual opinions on a wide variety of issues and are not just focused on the issues of the groups that we label them by. What about the Catholic who is in the teachers union teaching at the age of 50 who used to be a veteran? I'm guessing that they are concerned with a lot more than just abortion.

Thomas Melady seems to be inciting an issue that could soon turn out to be the swift-boat claim that haunted John Kerry into the general election. I think we should keep him and this issue on our radars if Rudy does end up getting his party's nomination.

Abortion Should be the choice of the Mother and Father. The Mother is the one to really make the choice for it is her body that the baby is in. As the gay issue goes it is their choice, but when you have Priest taking advantage of young boys and they do not get punished they just get moved around. That sickens me and there is a break down in the Roman Catholic Church and the Judicial system!!! Sorry, but I have no respect for your Roman Catholic Church. They need to fix their problems within before they start to tell or try and control what other people do.

    • Posted By: LUISGLAWYER @ 11/20/2007 1:53:02 PM

When you, jscheid,. compare the abortion issue you compare fruits with cars. The situations are not comparable and I will give you just one of many reasons.
The first reason for the gays to demand to be accepted is that they are legal consentig adults that do KNOWN what they are doing and they just opted for a new kind od sexual aprecciation lets say that way.Well
The key word here is CONSENTING.
Womem like to brag and say that the decision is only theirs WRONG.
Why they may ask I cam make this assertion.
SIMPLE the body that will be affected are not only yours....
      Sure yours will too.
BUT THE ONE THAT WILL BE MURDERED IS NOT YOURS.
      How so?
      Simple again...
The major proof (there are others) that the fetus is another body strange to the mothers body is that was not for the presence of the amminiotic fluid the fetus would be attacked by the immunological response of the immune system. That happens because the fetus is a third one.A strange to the body of the mother. So she can not dispose of another persons life at will.
she cant be a coward. So long against man that didnt deserved their pants using force against persons that could not defend themselves and now women wants to do the same against persons that cant expressoutside.
Fetus feel.Fetus tries to defend themselves against a lot of the propaganda that is done misleadinly by the prochoice.
I would defy you to see some videos that exists about this efforts the fetus do to deffend themselves.
      About priests.
Its funny that when the case involves priests it goes national. When it involves the mechanic next door probably not.
It will not get the same if it is a pastor.but a priest.....
Well sure there are problems in every place.
      M
There are problems in the marines in the navy in the army in the office in the private compannnies in the ....
There are people that do not deserve even the air that it breaths.
They however are not in a simgle field or creed.
The way you sayd seem to ME that you think that protestants do not have sinners in any forms sorry to be me to spoil your way to see your creed as a pure field but it isnt even today here is what happened " 80-year-old Georgia man slept with brother???s wife, fathered her child".
As this one there are lot of others with pedofily and on.So what need to lookked is a way to fix the persons including the prejudice you seems to bear.
Respect WE ALL have to have to ALL when that does not hapen the conflict and intolerance surges.

You missed one important point: The Catholic Church is VERY high profile, and very large... Therefore - headline worthy... Look around on page 300 of your paper some time (not literally), you will find through searching that: there's a non-catholic church in Georgia who's founder was found to have slept with his brother's wife, fathering a child. For example. Looking at the problem differently, ANY religion is totally imperfect. Period. They are, one and all, run BY HUMANS who are imperfect. Ergo, so are the institutions. It doesn't matter who the boss really is - it could be Allah, Jehova, Budda... They still either have to let us run things, or show up and do it themselves. So far, they haven't shown up.

They're so worried about having someone that knows what their views are, than having someone like Hillary Clinton, someone that has no self respect for staying with Bill, who not only cheated on her, but lied to her, and the entire world about it! And I suppose everyone has forgotten about Rudy during 9/11, a man that did his absolute best in the midst of utter chaos! Rudy, you have my vote!

  • Posted By: nvrwaz @ 11/20/2007 1:45:17 PM

Why is it this issue always tries to boil down to a woman and her body? First, there would be no child without a man AND a woman. You want a choice, that's it. Second, once a woman is with child, it's not just their body anymore. What terminus do we use to determine the difference between "cells" (which ARE still alive) and a child, which is also alive? 22 weeks? Why not 25 weeks... Or 30 weeks? We could keep going right up until birth. Matter of fact, we used to. Why not after birth: 1 week, 10 weeks, until they hit 18? How do you know you didn't just kill someone, instead of removing unwanted cells? And why is it that most post-abortive women feel effects ranging from massive guilt to post-traumatic stress disorder? That would be their subconcious trying to tell them they messed up. Finally, if there truly is a God - then you were gifted with free will. But, you were also offered a choice: follow certain rules and eventually get your reward, or don't and............don't. If ALL you want in existence is happiness on this earth - you may even get it. But if that is all you pursue - then pray there is no thereafter, because you will deserve nothing after the end of your days...
