A Struggle for the Sea Turtles

We've worked for years to protect them, so why are they still endangered?

Comment: As noted above, bycatch in fishing gears is one of the most urgent threat to some marine turtle populations. Fortunately, there are some improvements to fishing gears that can dramatically reduce bycatch. The World Wildlife Fund and our many partners are working in many countries to advance such improvements. We're also rewarding and inspiring new innovations to make fishing more sustainable through the International Smart Gear Competition, which offers case prizes for innovations in conservation. We awarded a total of $55,000 this last month and we plan to run the competition again in 2009. Anyone can win. Please visit www.smartgear.org for more information. Thanks! Kim Davis, WWF

Comment: Sane in Utah pretty much has it nailed.... greedy corporations have destroyed our earth for profit and it seems like most people are just fine with that. The only way the planet has a chance to heal is if we become the endangered species... probably not going to happen, but it should; and soon.

Comment: We as humans are destroying the earth and its majestic diversity every day, bit by bit. I thank God every day I have no children to pass on this sterile, poisoned world to. My apologies to all the children out there -- this happened on our watch and we did nothing. May God forgive us all.

Comment: The photo is of a Hawksbill sea turtle not a Loggerhead.
