The Bully-Boy Patriots

The NFL's greatest teams have always run up the score. And there are plenty of good reasons for the Pats to keep doing just that.

Comment: "we don't mind losing but do you have to score so many points on us? You embarrass us and it hurts our widdle feelings. "

somehow a cheap shot is alright but scoring points isn't...

Comment: one thing not mentioned is that points scored and given up can be a deciding factor in home field advantage

this ain't Sunday school'..this is professional football..about the closest thing to gladiators we'll probably ever see..a loss is a loss is a loss..does it matter by how many points you lose?

Comment: why all of a sudden does class get thrown out the window just because it is the Patriots running up the score? Come on...going for it on 4th doen when you are up 48 points? you patriot fans would have been the firts people whining if this had been done to the Patriots...I don't know about you, but I would not want my son to learn these unsportsmanlike shenanigans of the Pats. I am not sure why everyone is protecting the Pats on the score running up..its not like they have proven to be a trustworthy and classful organization, Its clearly obvious that they were running up the score on multiple occasions...so if it wals like a duck, looks like a duck, then its a freaking duck! call it what it is .. They are a classless bunch of terds liked only by the classless fans in New England.

Comment: So - I say again what I said yesterday to this moronic way of thinking: What then is the solution from all you whiners? Take a knee on every down? Kick a field goal on fourth down instead of going for it? But that's disrespectful. Go for it on fourth instead of kicking a field goal - and that's disrespectful. When does Brady come out - third quarter? Second quarter? First quarter? How very disrespectful! Should the Pats have to kick off 10 yards farther back than the opponent? Again disrespectful. Maybe they should play with fewer men on the field? Maybe they should spot the opponent 2 touchdowns? End the game with a mercy rule? Or, maybe some of these other teams should grow a pair and defense the Pats. I ask again - what is your "respectful" solution all of you whiners?

Comment: I'm on board with elvis957, they are pros. But it happens even in college. Does anyone whine when the UNC basketball team racks up lop sided victories over lesser schools? Back to the Pats, I looked at the facts. Through the first 11 weeks, the Pats scored 93 in Q1, 128 in Q2, 76 in Q3, and 114 in Q4. This works out to 221 in the 1st half and 190 in the second half. If you take away the TD's from defensive or special teams which can't be included in "piling it on" because they are more up to chance (0 in Q1, 14 in Q2, 14 in Q3, and 14 in Q4), the Pats scored 207 offensive points in the 1st half and 162 offensive points in the 2nd half. This doesn't look like piling it on to me. If you watch the flow of how their games evolve, they go to their 3rd and 4th stringers by the 4th quarter. This is most likely why the decline in 2nd half scores. They play the full 60 minutes and most notably have very limited injuries, which can't be said for many of the other teams. And they have great depth, and an almost impenetrable offensive line which give Brady lots of time. I bet the coaching staff looks at those going for it on 4th down plays as good practice, they can afford to not make the down, to try new things out for size. Enjoy watching it while you can, it probably won't happen again for a long while!

Comment: Unless I'm mistaken, the object of the game is to take the ball to the end zone of the opponent. If a team repeats this several times during a game, then they are achieving the goal. Instead of whining about a team who does this too many times (racking up the points) these people (the opposition coaches/players) should take this as an opportunity to identify their weaknesses so they play better ball next time.

  • Posted By: elvis957 @ 11/22/2007 9:49:33 AM

Comment: I agree,,,this isn't high school. When the ball is in possession of the team, isn't it the goal to take the ball to the oppenents end zone? So what if they make down there a dozen times or so? That has nothing to do with ethics, it has to do with playing the game.

Comment: Professional football players are paid a decent amount of money to play football games. Most of us who work 9 to 5 don't have the right to slack off and go home at 3 solely because we're having a bad day at work, so why would it be okay for football players on either side of a rout to beg off and stop playing after three quarters? What a bizarre mentality.

Comment: I am not a Patroits fan, however, I think they must continue to play their best and if the score gets run up in the process...oh well.

  • Posted By: jojoc10 @ 11/21/2007 11:55:59 PM

Comment: No matter what, remember that these are professional athletes. Professionals! This is what they get paid to do. If you don't want them running up the score, don't let it happen. Every team in this league gets an equal amount of time to prepare each week, it's not the Patriot's responsibility to make sure everyone is getting an equal chance to play and that little johnny gets an opportunity to run with the ball once during the game.

Bottom line: You can't turn it on and than miraculously turn it off. Full tilt full time....When you have your foot on someone's throat (in this case all of the NFL) unfortunately, sometimes you just have to push down.

If this is too candid, too earnest go watch soccer.

Comment: I'm sorry, but not everyone sees the Patriots as the bad guys. In California, we see echoes of Joe Montana and the great 49ers teams in this current Patriot franchise. We see pure artistry in football, where skill becomes beautiful. And we see a team that has a chance to reach heights unmatched in professional football. Enjoy the beautiful game of the incredible Patriots, and here's to them going 19-0.

Comment: People. People. Can we please all get back to hating the Dallas Cowboys. The only team to ever claim to be "America's Team." The Pats play as a team (abiet with some key talent added this year) and they play for 60 minutes which is really the reason for the scores being so lopsided. They also don???t do what too many other teams do, that is that they never look past an opponent week in and week out. The reason they are playing the way they are is not because of ???spygate??? but because of the AFC championship game last year.

Comment: You're an idiot. The issue was over Belicheck and the rest of the organization on his orders (or without them) cheats as well. It has been documented that teams visiting Gillete Stadium have had the headsets with their Offensive Cordinators in the booths cut out at just when the visitors were about to score. The Eagle players who been wondering for years how Belicheck knew to call the exact defense to beat their screen pass everytime. Now Belicheck figures if he can whup every team he plays against it will prove he really is that much more of a genuis than everyone else. I think he'd be far better by proving he is a gentleman instead. Nobody likes a sore winner, and that's how the Patriots appear to everyone outside the 617 area code.
It'd be a dang shame if no one figured out how to beat the Patriots until they played in the SuperBowl and an 18-1 team will go down in history as the biggest chokers of all time. Now that's something to root for.

Comment: The rest of the league sees how a team is supposed to play and earn those big salaries. The rest of the league players and owners are uncomfortable with that because it's pointing out to the fans " Hey, there's a team that has pride in what they do and they go out and earn those salaries, why can't our teams do that."
Go Pat's , keep on winning and if you have "so-called" run it up...go.

Comment: I prefer John Madden's comment during the game - It isn't the offenses job to stop playing, it is the defenses job to stop the offense. Don't blame the Pat's for scoring, blame their opponents defense for being unable to stop them.

Comment: I'm a lifelong niners fan, and for the past few years have noted that no quarterback's post-season stats can compare to Montana's, except for Tom Brady, who is about halfway through his career, and his post-season stats are about half that of Montana's. If he can continue to put up such spectacular numbers, and they keep this team around him for a few more years, he's gonna have more rings than he knows what to do with. The Pats must have the best O-line in the history of football. Their quarterback makes fantastic decisions, their receivers make unbelievable catches, and at any given moment, all 11 men are doing something. Rarely is there a time when you see a Patriot player standing around. They play as a team, they play to the whistle, they play for 60 minutes, and they'll whip your butt for every second of it if you let them. That's what football's all about. In high school or college teams are often far outmatched due to some school's limited talent pool, and there can sometimes be up to 90 men on the sideline, making a full 2nd or 3rd string substitution possible. Not so in the pros. They all draft from the same pool of players, all fight over the same free agents, and all have the same amount of money to spend. I love my niners, and if they played the pats right now, I'm sure they'd lose by about 60. My complaint would not be lodged with Belichick. My beef would be with George Warhop(49ers O-line coach) for given the quarterback zero protection, Darrell Jackson for being over-rated, and the O-line for their failure to open holes. My sympathies would be with my defense, who spend so much time on the field, even the lowly Rams can eventually get it done against them. You want to stop the Patriots? Step up, earn your paycheck, and play like a man. Nobody ever won a ring by whining and crying. So stop complaining, and appreciate the fact that you are invited to watch football history in the making every weekend. I've always rooted against you New England, but I'm starting to like the possibility of watching you go 19-0. Spank the Steelers and I may just turn to the dark side, but only for the rest of this year...

Comment: Okay, let's try this again. You're wife - a very wisewoman, mand you - was right. What is this - high school? I love it.

To summarize my previous comment - this isn't Pop Warner football with a mercy rule. This is the NFL. The teams getting beat on could stop the Pats. They could score more. They could execute better.

The expession is "Man up." I am a former athelete - a marginal one, so I had my share of "beatings" during my athletic career. It is a competition. If you want the beatings to stop, execute better.

Hat's off to this years Pats - this has been a long time coming. I am ecstatic with this years team, and relaize it is a once in a lifetime thing. I know there are going to be down years - this is New England football we're talking about, so I know there are going to be down decades, again. Get over and realize this is the nature of the game. Please stop your crying - it's hard to hear Gil Santos over all the whining!

Comment: You're wife - a very sage lady, mind you - had it right - what is this, high school? there is no mercy rule in the NFL, unlike PopWarner or Little League. Enough already. Last game we had out 4th and 5th string running backs in in the 3rd quarter, running the same off tackle play 3, 4 5 times in a row.

Man up, guys, c'mon! You want the Pats to stop scoring? Stop them. Dick Jauron and Marv Levy had no problems with what transpired last Sunday night. Nor did Joe Gibbs. This is professional football for goodness sake!

I remember the beatings we took. We're going to take more eventually. What goes around comes around. I understand this, and I don't doubt for a second both Brady and Belecheck and the remainder of the Pats organization understand it as well.

Stop your belly aching already. Again, your wife had it right...

Comment: There is no reason to run up the score like the pats do game after game....you can rationalize it as long as you want....you can go back into history and pick out isolated games with high scores.....it really doesnt matter. The patriots are just pissed off they got caught cheating and have decided to display the lack of class they have by running up the score...week after week.... for no other reason then they can't figure out it takes a certain abmount of class to NOT do it....Go ahead...call me a hater.....so be it.

Comment: Hey you know what?? If your favorite teams don't want their butts handed to them when the Pats come to town, maybe the opposing defense should show up for the game? That's what they get paid the "big bucks" to do... stop the other team from scoring. The Colts managed to keep the Pats offense in check.. Why can't anyone else?? Oh that's right Indy's defense came out to play.... So far the only team to do so. Get over it people, all NFL coaches have used tactics that are less then ethical.... difference here Bill got caught and slapped. But let's face it, with the arsenal of weapons that Brady has to choose from now, there was no other direction that this team was going to go. The professionals had the Pats winning the Super Bowl before the season even stared, and now that they are fullfilling everones' predictions they are the bad guys?? Come on people.... grow up.

Comment: Boo To you and you excuses for being bullies. Figures that a Pats fan would write an articles saying it is ok. As a fan of footbal and the father of 3 kids, how do I explain to them why the Pats went for a TD on 4th down when up by 30 something to a team that can seem to move the ball. I know, Poor Sportsmanship. They got caught with their hand in the cookie jar and now Belichek is showing his true colors by being a bully. When they meet up with the 0 and whatever Dolphins next time make sure you pound them deep into the ground so everyone knows that you can play. I am now a Pats HATER!!

    • Posted By: Classy Warfare @ 11/21/2007 5:12:10 PM

Comment: Well, how would you explain to them if they did something else on 4th down other than going for it? You could tell them they were "classy"(!) without mentioning that by not playing a full game to the best of their ability would be stiffing both the ownership that pays them, and the fanbase that pays to see them. You could tell them that the team that is facing the Pats is most likely composed of girly-men who would rather b*tch and moan about losing instead of manning-up to try and stop them. You could tell them that life is inherently unfair, and that no matter how much they may emulate Little Lord Fauntleroy, life will sometimes just throw wicked curveballs at them.

But maybe you're right. Maybe it's best to mislead them into thinking life at the top is just like life on the bottom.

If you take this approach, you'll doubtless feel better about venting your rage against a team that happens to be much, much better than yours, but you won't be doing the kids any favors.
