There are some serious flaws with the quiz.
On question 1, it is asked if the amount of liquor one can tolerate depends on your body mass or weight, and the answer given is false because genes, gender and age play a role. Well, so does weight, and the question does not say "depends entirely upon." Of course it depends on weight to a degree.
Question 2 asks which has the most alcohol, and the given answer is 16 ounces of beer. If I drink 1.5 ounces of Wild Turkey, which is 100 proof, I take in more alcohol than if I drink beer sold in grocery stores here, at 3.2%.
Question 5, asking about which diseases is moderate alcohol consumption believed to combat, lists both dementia and cardiovascular disease as possible answers. The answer being sought is true, but the article states that there is controversy over whether it helps combat dementia, so clearly some scientists believe it does.
Question 6, a true or false question, is very dependent on the genes of the person being discussed. It is not definitive for everyone.
And the last question asks when it is safe for a pregnant woman to drink. The article references differences in opinion from Europe to the US, but the question definitively asks for the US answer. Why would this be discussed in the article but ignored for the quiz?

In all, this is the worst written internet quiz I have ever taken.

I am a member now and I apologize for the poor grammar and punctuation from my post before. The light gray type and small box you have to type your comments in does not make it easy to proof read. I encourage the debate to continue. My views may seem extreme to some, but I am getting tired of seeing those little signs with Drink Responsibly or Drive Safely with arificial flowers around them or crosses meaning the same thing. Someone has died and it usually means with the written signs that there was a drunk driver involved. I am tired of seeing them because of the drunk drivers. In my area I can be more certain of the cause of death due to public concern which is carried through by local newspapers. I don't know if the percentage of drunk drivers is higher in women here, but I seriously doubt it. The guys are more likely to think they can drive better than the girlfriend, wife or whoever he is with. I have found out how much fun I actually do have when I go out and don't drink. I haven't had any alcohol in more than 2 years and I don't believe I ever will again. It's not part of my lifestyle anymore. I try to be a good example to young people in this matter to let them know it's ok not to drink, especially women. So many bad things happen to girls that drink. I have seen it and heard about it. Women need to take this matter into their own hands and not let guys or "girl power" dictate to them what they should do with their own bodies. Some experiences I have written about involved underage drinking. However, most have involved people 21 and older. I know that drinking is becoming a bigger problem with girls. Some think they have something to prove by how hard they party. What they don't realize is what exactly the article said about the body metabolizing alcohol at a slower rate in women than in men. I heard about this a couple of years ago. The message needs to get to the high schools and college campuses so young women can get accurate information and make informed decisions. I stumbled upon it while checking my email. I don't know what the age demographics for this site are, but I don't know anyone between the ages of 18-35 who subscribe to Newsweek. They should, I have found so many good articles on the site and through my uncle's magazine subscribtion. Keep up the good work Newsweek. Thanks.

Hello, I am 18 years old, and I just wanted to comment and say I am an avid reader of both Newsweek and Time magazine, I personally subscribe to Time, and Newsweek is required reading in our Current Events class. I took the quiz on alcohol and got 100% even though I do not drink. I agree not all teenagers are like me, but there is hope for my generation! Have a wonderful day, and I enjoy the comments!

I have a problem with question number 1: a large person who is not clinically obese has more total body water than a small one, and therefor a larger 'volume of distribution' for water soluble (hydrophilic) alcohol. Advancing on the metaphor from the article, it is like putting alcohol into large and small glasses, respectively: more alcohol must be added to the large glass to achieve the same concentration. Sex-related metabolic differences aside, as women tend to have more fat and less lean body mass and total body water than men, less alcohol would be required in a weight-matched pair. However, given these metabolic differences, women should not be compared to men with regard to their consumption of alcohol.

I am not a member, but I scored high on the survey. Drinking alcohol is just not a good thing all the way around. Whether it is for social reasons or health reasons. I personally (as this is my opinion) find the atmosphere of a dinner party or a bar/restaurant to be more inviting when people are not drinking. I find it to actually be refreshing when people are engaging in great conversations and making friendships that don't involve the "bond" of drinking buddies. I have been there and done that. I was never an alcoholic, but I did the social thing with my friends for good while. There seems to be a pervasive factor at a social gathering involving alcohol that you must drink. If you try to refuse people always want you to participate and think there is something wrong with you if you choose not to drink. I see no socially redeeming qualities in alcohol anymore, except if your are going to have a charity function you had better advertise that there will be wine served so that you can increase you donations (that's sad). Furthermore, the studies of drinking grape juice being as effective as drinking wine are interesting. It is too bad you don't hear of this alternative more often. Especially for those who do not want to drink alcohol, but do drink some for health reasons. Alcohol is a depressant. How many people do you know that are on anit-depressants and still drink. Alcohol is addictive. You don't have to drink every day to be an alcoholic. Alcohol can lead to much unwanted behaviour if not consumed properly. Living on the coast in Florida I see it all the time. Spring Break here is awful. Not all kids are drinking, but a high number are. Many are under their parents' or another responsible adult's supervision. In the vacation rental industry that I was involved with, the evictions we had to make from multi-million dollars properties were for insanely drunk tenants. Even the parents or supervising adults partied with the kids. This is not inclusive to Spring Break, it is going on all over the country and not at certain times as in holidays. I say the consequences outway the benefits.

Women are at higher risk of being perceived as sleazy and obnoxious than men when becoming even mildly intoxicated. Maybe it isn't fair, but it is true. Women tend to talk loud and 'shriek' in laughter, with even minimum alcohol intake. Note the table of 4 next to you when dining out....and you will frequently find the two women are so loud you have to raise your voice at your own table to be heard over their noisy banter. The larger the table of couples the worse it gets, and if it is all women at a table next to you give up and go to another establishment. I have noticed in drinking establishments that women 'get away with' intoxicated behavior that men could be jailed or bounced for. Everything from 'flashing' body parts, to groping and sexually touching men and other women, to dancing on tables and on the bar typically get a pass when intoxicated women do it. It isn't appropriate behavior for either gender but women seem to be at a higher risk of making fools of themselves with less alcohol consumption. Britney, Lindsy Lo, and Paris typify this.

Fight for your right to party; and to use correct punctuation. Heart wrenching story there albertlaura, but it loses effect when the poster is illiterate. And as for 'doctors' doing real studies about the effects of alcohol: they do! jd50 just sounds like another outsider getting motivated and angry about a situation he/shes not familiar with, and that seems to be the real problem with america these days. As with everything in todays society, its all about stupidity!

Fight for your right to party; and the right to use correct punctuation albertlaura. As for doing studies on the real effects of alcohol in 'correct' quantities: they do! Whats the problem with it? Sounds like just another outsider getting motivated and pointing fingers about a subject they're not too familiar with, the EXACT problem with america these days. As with everything in todays society, stupidity gets you far!

This reminds me of a quiz I would take in High School Health Class. It's full of leading questions (by use of quotes) and misinformation in order to scare the public into thinking they need to read this article. There are serious issues involved in alcohol abuse, so why not target those instead of treating the readers like 15 year olds.

Maybe the downfall of alcohol should be compared to these findings. My guees is that alcohol does more damage than good! It's just a shame that alcohol is such a big part of the economy, just like oil. It is amazing that a person can't go to an event and have a smoke, but hey, go ahead and drink and then drive yourself home afterward. When a child watches a sporting event they are inindated with the use of alcohol, which all make it seem as the expected thing to do and it's OK, cool, etc. Therre are probably good things to say about just abount anything that is used in small amounts. Come on doctors, do a real study about how alcohol is really used and be honest with the public about the dangers. I doubt that most alcohol users have only one small drink a day. As with everything in today;s society, it;s all about money!
