A Red Scare In Delhi

With the nuclear pact and a booming economy, India seems set to vault into the future—unless the Stalinist left succeeds in dragging it down.

Comment: India is far behind and there are so many poor people. If they need to do anything they need to help the poor people in their nation NOW before it is too late.

Comment: Mr Karat and his comrades want to ascertain that they are part of power center. They put India's progress and security at peril, unknowingly. We need nuclear technology for energy and security. Strong nations, both economic or military, commands respect and power. India should become strong first. No one can stop India, if it wants to be independent. No contract can bind India.

We need better policies and the government should move away from controls. Mr Karat and his comrades want to put the clock back. Manmohan may not be a better politicians; he may be listening to his former masters from WB and IMF. Yet some of his and Chidambaram's policies have done miracles for India, since early 1990s. Mr Karat and his comrades must realize this fact. They must try tune towards Indian needs. They must listen to fellow conrades like Buddadeb, instead of working through their tinted glasses and idiological hat.

Comment: Abusive language cannot replace logic. There are a few points. Agreed that Karat has never contested and won any popular election, but what about Dr. Singh who is a member of the upper house? If CPI(M) is a rogue, why does not Dr. Singh dare jettison it? High growth rates are all right but what about the "aam adami"? Read latest HDR and UNESCO report, not authored by CPI(M). Sonia is more realistic.

Comment: It does not require much intelligence to abuse somebody. I have a few questions: (a) Karat has never contested and won an election, but what about Dr. Singh? Does it look proper that India's PM is a member of the upper house? He contested for lower house once and lost miserably. If CPI(M) is a rogue party, why doesn't Singh dare part company with it? High growth rates, yet people's lot has not improve a la HDR. anUNESCO

Comment: In the past both India and US, though being largest democracies, did share an uneasy friendship. However, in many ways, both these nations were collaborating and having trade. This suspicion between these nations are rather from the perspectives of the politicians. As the leading Democracies, India and US must treat each other as equal partner and enter in to all types of agreements to lead the rest of the World to achieve World peace. US must come forward in explaining their stands and objectives of the treaty to the left in India. The left parties in India must not see US with suspicion as always. What have we achieved by stuch a stand so far. All of the parties must also understand, any agreement between two parties, if biased will not last. One of the parties can break the agreement, if it is not meeting with common goal. Controlling can not achieve co-operation. US must also trust India, a democratic nation with solid credential, than trusting Pakistan or China.

Comment: It is neither the political manouverings nor the wrong policies , qoute " that kept India a poor and marginal backwater for many years", it is the corruptions (in all forms) at every level of government and society and the non-civic mindedness of its people. Corruption in India has directly escalated the cost of doing business, services and almost everything by more than 100%. Law enforcement in India is a farce. I suggest you read the book Maximum City Bombay Lost and Found by Suketu Mehta. The only thing that was not mentioned in the book is the fact that in Amritsar Railway Station, the first daily chores ( at dawn) of the cleaners is to flush out all the human feaces that had been excreted the night before everywhere at the rail track within the station. But of course Amritsar is not in Maharastra.

Comment: I think this article is rather charitable on Karat.......the truth is that Karat and his group have held the country to ranson for the last 3+ years. They know they have a failed ideology, can never support their positions with any logic or reason. They have been ruling West Bengal for 30+ years and have brought the state to its knees. Now are in bed with the fundamentalist organizations. They are even blocking the ovt from passing laws that have a simple majority, on which Cong and BJP agree, like insurance bill, labor laws reform.

The sad part is that Congress does not have the spine to call him on his bluff....and ram through the reforms. Let Karat call and election ....the communist will go back to the obscurity that they deserve. Karat is a disgrace on the country.

Comment: I don't feel the article is biased
Amazing that even as the Chinese enthusaitcially shirk off communism and embrace free markets, Karat and others are unwiling to let go of their old fears, prejudices and insecurities. They cling to their failed ideas as if it is mothers milk, instead of tasting it for the gall it actually is. Unfortunately many of these communist leaders have kids who are all doing well by studying an/or working abroad. So they really don't have to worry as much about the economic gowth of the country as the mass of poor and lower middle calss people do. Hopefully, Mr. Karat can get a job as a lobbyist for some large Chinese firm after he retires from politics, but I am not sure they would hire a communist.

Comment: The article is grossly erroneous in its facts, not to mention the skewed perspectives. The concerns of India's autonomy of Foreign Policy being lost is not uncalled for. The threat of USA pulling the plug (quiet literally!) is very real. The most important clause in the so called 123 agreement gives USA the right to withdraw all supplies essential to produce Nuclear Energy if India chooses the route of Nuclear proliferation even if it's disparate from Civilian nuclear facility leaves great room for USA to dictate terms to india on her foreign policy. Imagine a world (13 years down the line, when 10 proud percentage of Indian power will be fueled by the yankees) which once again is Bi- or Multi-Polar - which is not an impossibility - with NATO losing it's teeth (and support) in Afghanistan, resurgent Russis vigorously opposing USA's strategic expansion in Eastern Europe, new found nationalism (backed by economic strength) of european states, it's easy for India to be left with no choice of siding with a, what could be, a partner in peril. After all, no superpower has outlasted time, and USA will barely be able to cling on to that status for long.
That apart, the article boldly tries to vilify Karat on multiple counts - some of it not untrue and most of it plain garble. Accusing CPI-M cadre of malise in Nadigram, where Mr. Bhattacharjee, the Communist CM of West Bengal has publicly denigrated the archaic policies of communist party in India, is only searching desperately for perspectives which will help provide the much needed corroboration for the otherwise mediocre article.

Comment: India is 60 years young democracy and is much more mature than the US of the wild wild west. We are growing along with china [ communists ]. The communists in India are examples of the fine checks and balances of a democracy. The article is biased. We In india have qualified professionals leading our nations unlike the USA. We are capable of reading the fineprints of agreements. I will not dream of entering into an agreement with the worst president of the USA. If Hillary Clinton gets elected, it would mean the end of US influence on world affairs. I would advise Newsweek editors against publishing articles that are so biased. An Intern from a college would have done better justice.

Comment: The communists are just Chinese agents...they keep doing China's bidding. They keep protesting against US(forgetting Aid during famines) and licking Chinese Boots(who attacked us in 62 and contnue to undermine our security by helping the Pakis with Nukes). When it suits them they kill muslims(nandigram ) but keep sympathising with terror suspects(to protect their vote banks0 Horrible fellows really! As an Indian let me assure this world hat these traitors will not, cannot stop our march to progress.....And helping make this world more prosperous for all of us...

Comment: Why make a bogeyman of Karat? Two thirds of the Indian Parliament are against the deal. Judging by the vagueness of this article about the terms of the so-called 123 Agreement, which just a few weeks ago was being held out as far too good for India, the American pubklic needs to be kept in the dark about it. In any event, this is nearly obsolete technology that creates problematic toxic waste, and will be replaced iin the West with solar and wind energty.

Comment: Kudos for such scathing criticism of dinosaurs (no offense meant for dinosaurs) like Prakash Karat and his ilk. It is incredible to watch the Communist Party of India (such a misnomer, the India part) indulge in jaw-dropping hypocrisy and evil machinations designed to transport India back in time into the Dark Ages; something even H.G. Wells only could contemplate about in his Time Machine. Just hope the communists get their head out of the sand and realize the harsh fact that they're just an appendage, a gangrene that is poisoning the Indian elephant insidiously.
Communism is dead and no one need shed a tear for Prakash Karat and his extended family.

Comment: Why make a bogeyman out of Prakash Karat? Two thirds of the Indian Parliament are against this deal, known as the 123 Agreement, whose terms must obviously be kept from the American public judging by this article, In any case it makes no sense for India to buy technology that is about t become obsolete and creates toxic waste while solar and wind power are developed.for "advanced" economies.
