This could be the start of Europe's biggest turnaround since Thatcher revived Britain.

Comment: Thatcher revived Britain? Sarkozy intriques France with his vigour, assertiveness and action?Fareed, it's easy to come up with those rationalisations when you're sitting in a journalistic "sky box" and not on the ground. The French want his ass out asap and they take to the streets to prove it, unlike the US, where noboby cares if two million march for a month straight. God bless the French--the USAs first ally.

Comment: As always, Mr. Zakaria presents an analytical view that so well describes the subject he is writing about. It is refreshing to read his contributions and I wish a lot of people will read them. Pure education! And rare !!! He gets to the core of his subjects - with a fresh and non-influenced approach. He even told us how wrong our Presidential politics were - long before other media and slanted news writers followed to agree ---Congrats!

Comment: The work ethic in France is certainly different than that in the United States. I just hope that the value of the family and life outside of work is not lost in their attempt to create a more productive workforce.

Comment: A fine piece. France also has a very high rate of IT adoption and investment by its firms (in part, ironically, because it's so costly to add labor), and its health care system is outstanding. Here's hoping that Sarko's charm offensive convinces Americans and Frenchmen that there's much we can learn from each other. France would do well to study our success with labor flexibility, venture capital/entrepreneurship, and especially race relations and assimilation (hint: corporatism doesn't work; give people economic opportunities and get out of their way). For our part we would do well to emulate the French success in health care-- yes, curtail the private insurance mafia and give us single-payor-- and in adopting mass transit, high school standards, and nuclear power (s.t. like 70% of French energy's generated with nukes).

Let's take the best of each system and form a hybrid that can lead the world in energy efficiency, economic dynamism, cutting edge technology and social provision for the least fortunate.

Isn't it ironic: Xerox is hoping it can profit by teaching companies how to reduce their printing.
