Comment: I feel as though the title for this article is horrible (I won't even touch the article). It appears as though the author has a lax additude towards an education.

Comment: When do women and alcohol mix? Only at closing time!

Comment: I completly disagree with this article, as it starts off with a false primace. If men and women are completely equal, then it stands to reason that they would handle alcohol the same (don't try and conince me they are different). Personally, I prefer woman handling my alcohol more than men. I also try and mix as much alcohol with my women as possible.

Comment: So this time what kid of new, special treatment exclusively for women do Newsweek recommend? Special studies on effects of alchohol on women? Special treatment plan funded by goverment? Special awareness raising programme about women and alchohol and special programme to counter negative stereotype associated with women and alchohol?

We can pass a legislaton limiting alchohol consumption by women, for example raise the age limit fom current 21 to 25 or 30 for women only, or limit the sales of alchohol to women (say, no more than one glass per female customer) or ban consumption of alchohol by women altogether. Is it a discrimination, or simply trying to "protect" these extremely vulnerbale creatures?

Comment: There have been notable studies which indicate that the physiological harm to a woman is as much as 50% greater than a man for a given amount of alcohol. In my opinion this is criminal in it's omission.

Comment: As an occassional drinker, my last drink occurred this summer. I asked for a pina colada with a double shot of rum..(I was thirsty) and It was summertime and I had just returned from the one of the best cruises of my life. Before I knew it the Reggae music had me dancing and crying and slobbering. It was the drive on my way home that I said..Hell No.. No More....but that's just me...I imagine I looked like a middle aged woman on the brink of whatever...

Comment: Call me boring, but why drink heavily in the first place if you know you are going to be filled with formaldehyde-like poison and feel like death? I grew up with an alcoholic mother -- and it was hell. If for no other reason than that alcohol makes women (especially older women) look horrible and pitiful (and I am an older woman saying this), and that excessive drinking hurts the people around you, I'd advise avoiding the stuff all together. I was never a social drinker, but used to drink wine with dinner and have the occasional cocktail. For a few years now, even a small amount of wine has made me feel ill. I thought it was because wine has so many added chemical agents these days, or a psychological thing relating to my mother's drinking, but perhaps it's just my age and changing body. All things considered, I think it's for the best. Why consume something that has the potential to damage your brain and vital organs, when most of us are doing all we can to retain at least the appearance of youth (diet, exercise, Botox, line fillers, surgery..)?

Comment: I'm consider myself to be one of those people who think that a meal without a glass wine is uncivilized. A five ounce glass imbibed in the setting of a major meal doesn't constitute the sort of insult your liver is incapable of dealing with -- in fact, that's one of the reasons you have a liver. However, I am with you on the topic of hard alcohol and excessive consumption in general. I also believe that the very real health benefits of moderate consumption are due to the attitide adjustment/stress releif ait affortds

Comment: Errata: there is a tremendous amount of overlap in the abbreviations used by physicians. Unfortunately there are three possible ADHs affected by the consumption of alcohol. While anti diuretic hormone is suppressed by alcohol, it has nothing to do with its metabolism. It leads to a watery, sodium-wasting diuresis, and likely effects both sexes equally. However, there are two ADHs involved in the metabolism of alcohol: alcohol dehydrgenase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. Both of these hormones are primarily active in the liver. The first hormone converts (oxidizes) alcohol to acetaldehyde, which like formaldehyde, is a poison. The second hormone oxidizes acetaldehyde to citric acid, which is the primary Krebs Cycle (aerobic metabolism) substrate.

The problem with this system is that the first hormone, alcohol dehydrogenase, works rapidly, while acetaldehyde dehydrogenase works much more slowly, leading to a back-up of poison acetaldehyde which is responsible for the constellation of symptoms commonly known as a hangover.

The other problem is that citric acid has two metabolic fates. It can either be used for aerobic respiration, or it can be converted to fat. The latter pathway accounts for the fatty livers of pre-cirrhotic alcoholics and the succulent livers of certain French geese and ducks.

I always advise people that the best way to cure a hangover is aerobic exercise: aerobic activity will utilize citric acid and ???push??? the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase towards the production of more. As odious as the prospect of a brisk morning jog may seem after a night of heavy drinking, get out the running shoes and, as the Nike ad says, ???just do it???. As you are probably very dry, make sure to hydrate beforehand. Trust me, you???ll be almost back to normal when you???re finished.

Comment: Women are at higher risk of being perceived as sleazy and obnoxious than men when becoming even mildly intoxicated. Maybe it isn't fair, but it is true. Women tend to talk loud and 'shriek' in laughter, with even minimum alcohol intake. Note the table of 4 next to you when dining out....and you will frequently find the two women are so loud you have to raise your voice at your own table to be heard over their noisy banter. The larger the table of couples the worse it gets, and if it is all women at a table next to you give up and go to another establishment. I have noticed in drinking establishments that women 'get away with' intoxicated behavior that men could be jailed or bounced for. Everything from 'flashing' body parts, to groping and sexually touching men and other women, to dancing on tables and on the bar typically get a pass when intoxicated women do it. It isn't appropriate behavior for either gender but women seem to be at a higher risk of making fools of themselves with less alcohol consumption. Britney, Lindsy Lo, and Paris typify this.

Comment: Women and men are equally capable of making asses of themselves when drunk. Just ask the girls I mooned on the Spanish Steps on New Years Eve a decade ago: Boun Anno!

Comment: The article also overlooks the fact that due to their lack of built in flux-capacitors, women are unable to handle the 8.21 gigawatts of electricity generated by a bolt of lightning.

Comment: ACLaire is correct; the article incorrectly identified the enzyme. We doctors who use alcohol for health reasons know our physiology

  • Posted By: ACLaire @ 11/24/2007 4:13:51 PM

Comment: This article seems to confuse anti diuretic hormone and alcohol dehydrogenase. I have seen both abbreviated as ADH, however they are very different. Alcohol consumption inhibits the production of anti diuretic hormone ( a hormone produced by the hypothalamus and acts on the kidneys. This hormone does not break down alcohol but lack of this hormone increases urine production. Alcohol dehydrogenase is an enzyme found in the digestive tract that does aid in the breakdown of alcohol, and women produce much much lower levels of alcohol dehydrogenase then men do, leading to smaller break down of the molecule and higher diffusion rates of alcohol into a womens blood stream. The fact check on this article should have been more through to catch this mistake.

Comment: Do women have lower levels of alcohol dehydrogenase or acetaldehyde dehydrogenase.
