Obama demonstrated in his visit to Google not only a deep grasp of the usual issues candidates discuss, but a vision for how technology could help reform Washington. His open government plan (that he unveiled at Google) aims to make wasteful Washington spending and practices open for Americans to see online. Before we can get our politicians to do anything marginally useful for the American people, we need to break the ties between lobbyists and politicians, andshame them and the special interests that support them.

Unpenalized outsourcing has already led to a decline in available tech jobs in the states (and therefore pay as well). Not to mention that anytime I have worked with someone who was trained in India or China it really has been more of a grotesque hinderance than a benefit. The author obviously has no relevent experience with real world technical expereince aside from what his corporate middle management buddies tell him during midlife crissis discussions at the local Starbucks. Steven, next time you want to comment on something perhaps make it about a subject with which you are aquainted? For example, Vista's pretty new colors or the latest thing Bono said?

Silicon Valley IS a different culture. Neither better nor worse, but different from that of the bulk of the Republic. Then again, so are many places, stating with Washington D. C. and working down to Dallas. In this extended, microtrend-based campaign, the idea of the endlessly repeated stump speech is becoming, at best, quaint. ...... But broadband by 2010? I'd be happy to get DSL, and I live only 35 miles from the capital of Oregon.

If a company wants foreign workers I see no problem with permitting them to have them. I also see no problem in having these yahoo's shot for treason. America first, last and always. Globalization is a sham that harms Americans and undermines our sovereignty. Whether it be importing illegal unskilled labor for menial work while whole swathes of our population are falling further away from the American dream, or by rationalizing bring in other foreigners for "skilled" labor while Americans wages are dragged down results in the same thing. The American rich get richer, and the American middle class get screwed.

Just adding more H1 Visa's will not solve the lack of technology talent. We need to invest in our own talent by providing educational incentives. Many young bright minds are moving out of technology because they think there will be no jobs. I do agree that the issue needs to be examined with the possibility of having foreign talent, the best and the brightest, given incentives to stay and become citizens.

Silicon Valley must seem like a different world to most of the rest of America.
