I used to have a lot of respect for Sen. McCain, and his ability to challenge his own party on issues. However, his position on this war is ruining his chances for a serious run at the White House. Seventy percent of Americans want this open ended, mission-less, nation-building, bankrupting conflict ended. Sen. McCain also needs a history lesson. Adolf Hitler came to power in a democratic republic, by corrupting the democratic processes, after Germany was saddled with a large war reparation to pay.

McCain didn't compare Paul to Hitler - he was talking about the historic consequences of America and other free nations not being involved in world affairs - thus allowing tyrants to aggress without checks on their power. McCain was a consistent critic of Rumsfeld's Iraq policy from the beginning and throughout the 2004 election season as well. Now the surge is allowing Iraqi refugees to return to their homes and take power away from the thugs and terrorists.

Democrats (like Clift) want John McCain to win the primaries because they believe he is the "Iraq candidate," and Iraq is a winning issue for them. However, McCain has been right all along about how to win in Iraq, and I believe his integrity, experience, moderation, and principled stands would combine to trounce anyone in the Democratic field.

John McCain has been making the same criticisms about the Bush-Rumsfeld handling of the war from the very beginning, and throughout 2004 - take a look at http://www.johnmccain.com/fie/timeline.htm
The surge is keeping violence down and has led to decreased casualties among American soldiers and Iraqi noncombatants. Refugees are coming back to their homes and reestablishing their communities. It is up to the Iraqi leaders to take the oppurtunity in this environment, but the surge has had positive results in the real lives of people.

John McCain's tirade at the last debate lost him any respect I ever had for him. He was rude, mean, hateful, and insulting. That's not the kind of president I want. He changes his positions, other than staying with his denial about the war, with the wind. He had the audacity to infer another candidate was Hitler-like and has no concept of the difference between "non-intervention" (Ron Paul's stand) and "intervention". His politics are dirty.

McCain a straight talker? This is the guy who wholeheartedly embraced Bush and all his disastrous policies in his second presidential run and only after his election did McCain go back to his own views. McCain demonstrated he'd lie with the worst of them in order to advance his selfish ambitions. McCain is also a wounded, twisted soul (perhaps from his POW days) who has shown himself to be a stubborn warmonger of the worst order (despite his protests to human torture), a blind supporter of a war that the USA never had moral justification for and is naught but a brutal boot on the throats of others in an attempt to control their oil. The surge is NOT working. It was to meant to reduce violence to allow the 21 point political solution to occur, which has not and will not happen. No, McCain is a liar and fraud, the only kind of candidate Republicans seem able to offer us anymore.

What the hell is she smoking. In order for John McCain to make a comeback he would need to bump into jesus at the 7/11

If I voted for any Republican, it would be McCain even though he is wrong on the war.

I disagree. I believe that McCain's combat and Senatorial experience coupled with the one trait his rivals lack, namely, honesty, makes him the perfect candidate for President.

Lot of Swift Boating going on in posts in here:

    1. Admiral McCain was CINCPACPLT when John was a POW not CNO.
    2. John McCain was not spared when a POW as he can not raise his arms.
    3. John McCain came out against the Swift Boating of Kerry while it was happening
    4. Real Republicans are not sick of the war just tired of not winning and finishing
    5. etc.

Emotion tends to change the facts during an election.

John McCain is not Presidential material, he makes a great Combat soldier, but he does not have the know how or ability to resolve economical issues, or any other issues now facing this country. I think he needs to just go to Iraq and fight, because we true Republicans are sick of this war, and the waste. Bring our troops home now, and send McCain over by himself to fight.

Mc Cain, and Thompson are too old and should drop out of the race. Guliani is too corrupt and just be put on trial for the Qatar scandal.

McCain swift boated along with Kerry. When a fellow war veteran is being raked over the coals like swift boat did to Kerry and you stand back and watch... you better not have skeletons in your own closet. McCain made some pretty anti-american videos while at the Hanoi Hilton. Those can always surface in the same way that Kerry's peace movement tapes did. There is also the fact that McCain was spared primarily due to his fathers position as Chief of Naval Operations.

McCain is subject to swift boat tactics any time. He stood by while a comrade in arms was raked over the coals and now he is just as susceptable. Any time an organization like swift boat can pull out McCain's videos while at the Hotel Hanoi. His most favored son status as a p.o.w. is also open game. While held McCain's father was the chief of naval operations. What goes around, comes around. former McCain supporter
