I used to have a lot of respect for Sen. McCain, and his ability to challenge his own party on issues. However, his position on this war is ruining his chances for a serious run at the White House. Seventy percent of Americans want this open ended, mission-less, nation-building, bankrupting conflict ended. Sen. McCain also needs a history lesson. Adolf Hitler came to power in a democratic republic, by corrupting the democratic processes, after Germany was saddled with a large war reparation to pay.

McCain didn't compare Paul to Hitler - he was talking about the historic consequences of America and other free nations not being involved in world affairs - thus allowing tyrants to aggress without checks on their power. McCain was a consistent critic of Rumsfeld's Iraq policy from the beginning and throughout the 2004 election season as well. Now the surge is allowing Iraqi refugees to return to their homes and take power away from the thugs and terrorists.

Democrats (like Clift) want John McCain to win the primaries because they believe he is the "Iraq candidate," and Iraq is a winning issue for them. However, McCain has been right all along about how to win in Iraq, and I believe his integrity, experience, moderation, and principled stands would combine to trounce anyone in the Democratic field.
