Talking with someone about a scientifically unsupported health notion - that they happen to believe in - is like talking to a young-earth creationist. I.e., you aren't going to change their minds, facts are utterly irrelevant, and you're probably both going to go away mad.

Agree 95% - Remember we are all like snowflakes -- what works for one person may not work for someone else. --

in general i agree, however the fact that you lump acupuncture into the mix of dubious practices lets us know that while you won't publish anything that hasn't had double blind studies done doesn't mean you won't pick and choose on which studies you will report. acupuncture has been shown to be effective for osteoarthritis in nih-funded double blind studies. in fact, these studies encouraged me to see an acupuncturist when my knee arthritis started to effect my ability to get around. after my one (and only) treatment, my condition improved (as described in the study).

so i would feel better if you included the caveat "don't worry, i will still be a biased yellow journalist."

I believe that 90% of snake oil cures are useless -- the other 5% are only marginally useless. However, the human species is related to the snow flake in that we are all different and we all require different things to make us work. If someone wants to believe a tv ad instead of real medical research that is his business and ok with me.

Agree completely. Along these lines, when will someone start bebunking the Snake Oil remedy 'Head On' and its proliferating co-products. The notion that you can cure, or in any way releive, headaches by spreading something like what I suspect is diluted rubbing alchohol on your forehead is jsut so much ridiculous and dangerous BS it deserves a serious outing.

Let us not forget that ALL Western drug companies care about is getting folks as early on as possible to get on to as many drugs as possible, as long as possible... idea is to never to 'cure', but to 'treat'. Treatments that have side effects worse off than the original condition, nevertheless finding hordes of patients popping in pills and emptying out bank accounts and social security... only to feed those million dollar bonuses!

Homeopathy is a real medical field, that commercially aligned, Wall Street slaves (also called "Modern Medicine") wants to discredit because it ACTUALLY CURES instead of resulting in a predictable cash flow through daily dosage. So, let us get off our high horses of believing that Western Medicine is the only way to go. Drug companies are constantly inventing sub-classes of diseases and 'treating them'!

This article should be read by students of all ages who need help sorting through all the claims of "cures," miraculous or otherwise. The criteria the author suggests might be applied to many ideas as well but certainly alleged research that lacks large, double-blind tests, etc. may lead to more damage than help in people needing relief.

I have recently heard about a health product called MonaVie. It has the produce Acai Berry and glucosamine. It's healing properties are said to come from anti-oxidants allowing the body to heal itself. There are multiple testamonies that MonaVie helps the body heal itself in many ailments.

Is there any known medical evidence from respected journals that report on either Acai or MonaVie?

And if you think about it, why would the drug companies actually cure anything if they can avoid it. They make billions on cold medicine (over the counter) a year. To cure a simple cold would bankrupt some of these companies. Look at the billions they make on cancer drugs, treatments, tests...to cure that would cause loss of jobs and bankrupcty. Has any president ever gotten cancer? Maybe I am using a tin hat but I think they have a cure for colds and cancer..but have it locked up tightly.
