Wow, one can read all the responses and realize that racism is alive and well. Just sad.

Why does everything have to become a racial issue. As long as everything is US vs THEM and as long as poeple want to walk around with a chip on their shoulder there will people willing to sign into the THEM crowd just for opposition sake. How about mourning violence and a violent lifestyle and letting people be people instead of trying to fluff up your jounalism career by playing the inflamatory race card.

The Sport World is in mourning over the untimely and tragic death of Sean Taylor. Sport writers and commentators on ESPN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox have given their thoughts and opinions on why this tragedy happened. Did his past life come back to haunt him? Was it his fame and his life style that caused him to be a target? Did his skin color make him more likely to be a victim of this sort of crime? (Since I could not watch, or read, or hear all the programs about Sean Taylor???s life and death, I maybe repeating something that someone may have already said.
I have not heard or read what I think is the number one reason why this murder took place. I am laying the blame on the social historical aspect of this country???s judicial / legal system that has allowed this type of criminal behavior to be tolerated when it concerns minorities. If one does any historical research on Black on Black crime in the USA, one will realize that this country has ignored this deviant behavior. The black people that commit crimes against blacks also know this fact. The black criminals know that the police really don???t give a damn and that they will minimally investigate crimes against other blacks, or browns against browns or Native Americans against Native Americans. The chances of these criminals getting caught are slim, and if they are caught and convicted, the time they serve is almost nothing; however, if that crime was committed by a minority on a white citizen, the legal system is hell bent to solve the crime and punish the perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law.

(Since Reconstruction or the end of Slavery, the life of a black person is not worth much in this society. The only good black is a dead black, you can interchange the word "black" with Indian (red) or Mexican (brown) and the meaning will be the same.
If Sean Taylor was not a famous football player, he would just have been another dead black male and his case would have been ignored or closed within a week not from the lack of evidence but because Sean Taylor was a black male and from the lack of importance giving to his life. Those young black men that broke into Sean Taylor???s house and killed him knew the odds were in their favor of committing robbery and getting away with it because they were robbing a black man.) This is very harsh. But true.

The underlying truth needs to be told: historical racism imbedded in the lopsided US justice system should be examined in the death of Sean Taylor and many others minorities. I am not giving making an excuse for those murderers, but our society should take some of the blame or reexamine itself.

If he has a criminal record, he has a criminal record. Apparently, he WAS a thug before his daughter was born and nothing will change that. He tried to fix his life up, maybe, but that doesn't erase the past. What Blacks really need are for people to stop coddling us like we're idiots. Stop trying to cater to us and say, "Oh, its the media's fault, not yours" or "You don't want to learn English? We'll make Ebonics a language especially for you". Be real. No, its not only the media's fault, its our fault too. The only reason the media still portrays Blacks in this light is because Blacks still embrace it. Its the exact same stereotypes as before when "Jump, Jim Crow. Jump" came out in the Civil War era. This is nothing new. Its called internalized oppression and while we may have been oppressed in the past, we are the only ones truly oppressing ourselves now.

You need to read Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison because you are obviously confused about who actually holds the power and influence in this "Sweet Land of Liberty." Hint: NOT YOU!! If you are college educated then you will be able to juxtaposed the events in the narrators life with current issues and events in the 21st century. Every Black person in America should read this novel as a requirement, and you need to crack it open and really, really read it. You are INVISIBLE and you are not even aware of it.

Congratulations to ashpo8 on 2X graduation. I'm a recent Math Science graduate, here's what I observed in the public university I attended. As classes become more technical in mathematics, the composition of the class changed to Indian/Asian/Caucasion. I had pretty fair representation of all ethnic and genders in my basic classes, but had only one African-American in math classes above sophmore level. Why is that? These students were free to select courses. Why is there an overall deselection of math and science courses?

    • Posted By: Si18 @ 12/06/2007 4:56:35 PM

Because in your college apparently there is either more Indian/Asian/Caucasians than Blacks or in your college there are other things that appeal more to the majority of the Black students there. If you don't major in math or a science then a mathematics class is not needed for your degree. Taking/majoring in math and science doesn't make you any more intelligent or civilized than taking/majoring in English and the arts. Why would it matter if Blacks weren't in your math classes anyway? If it was to prove that Blacks are less intelligent or that we simply do not have an interest in what's "classy" and "proper", then apparently, your view of what makes someone intelligent and cultured is terribly misconstrued...

      Geoff

I believe I can answer that for you. I received my MBA/CPA license many years ago and I assure you that at least 1/4th of my class were African-American. We seek degrees with a high probability of a large salary or payoff, not one where you are delegated to teaching high school mathematics for $30,000 a year!

That being said--this is a blog about Sean Taylor's media coverage. Answer this for me: Why the double standard in the media dealing with the stereotyping of Mr Taylor as a "thug" while this white maniac that just killed 9 innocent people is being projected as "depressed and troubled"?

  • Posted By: DonnaEdmond @ 12/06/2007 9:30:13 AM

To white people who think that they are being blamed for the ills of black society: You are so wrong and so racist: There is a concept called white privilege, which is as pervasive as the air we all breathe. Yes, white society needs to be held accountable for the stereotypes that it puts out regarding black men. No, not all black men are thugs. Yes, there are many white boys that are losers and thugs, but somehow those white boys are given a chance, and their bad boys ways are relegated to being young, while black boys' behavior is forever remembered and unforgiving, no matter how hard they try to evolve into something else. Top that with the fact that white boys are three times more likely to be hired for a job having a jail record than a black boy with no record. It is time to wake up and be responsible for racist beliefs and actions. They hurt everyone, especially my black children, and I worry that my children will be stigmatized by people who post offensive, racist, and ignorant posts. And by the way: statistics show that over 50% of people who purchase b.*** music are white surban kids.

    • Posted By: Si18 @ 12/06/2007 4:51:20 PM

I agree, its time to wake up and be responsible for racist beliefs and this includes the minorities who reinforce them. "White society" does not need to be held accountable for anything; ALL of society does. It is not "Whitie" who is stereotyping us, its everyone. As a literate, classy Black college student, its HARD to intergrate with my fellow Blacks. Why? Because THEY are the ones that put me down and call me a traitor because I hate mainstream rap and speak properly. No one is trying to make me into a stereotype except other Blacks. The media doesn't help, but the media is not the main problem. Media is controlled by BOTH producers and consumers; consumers need to stop eating those racist ideologies up and producers will stop making them. Segregating our society into "white society" and "black society" does nothing but further encourage hate. You are no better than the "white society" you are trying to place blame on. This is not the era of civil rights where we cannot defend ourselves: this is the 21st century. No one decides our fate except us now and we need to stop using others as a scapegoat (and this goes for all of mankind, NOT just Black people). Yes, its very sad that this man had to be stereotyped as a thug but his past doesn't help much. He is at fault just like the media is, even if to a lesser extent. We, as a supposedly civilized and intelligent society of humans, need to take responsibility for our past and our mistakes and stop blaming others.

The sad thing about most of the comments here are that they are no surprise. Race in the US will always bring out the worse comments in people. There is never a question raised if a white person is protecting their property by any means necessary including killing a person if necessary. Sean Taylor was dragged into court for protecting his own property. Every day I know I live in the US just by the ignorance I get to read and hear on comment boards. The man was murdered and he still can't get a break , only in America.

Seriously though, when I was college, I was interested in medicine and computer science. I was discouraged from doing so and encoraged to pursue business by a white counselor. I graduated double major finance and marketing. I regretted doing so and will go back to pursue my original aspirations. This was only one case. I do not judge all scenarios by only my experience. You shouldnt either geoff1990.

That was only one class. Maybe they dint like being in the same class with you.

I can't believe that mark99505 is so idiotic...but it figures. Anywho, I'm an African American college GRADUATE (2 times, thank you very much) and when you get ready to deal with your insecurity issues you can come see me...at my office and I will gladly take your money . Comeback to that? I think not.
On a more mature note, African Americans are stigmatized, as shown by the comments below. What if we went around say "All white people are gunmen who are crazy with their GAP jeans, MALE enhancement commercials, and maxed out credit cards". It would seem a little harsh wouldn't it? Get over yourselves, judge a person as an individual, otherwise we will all venture to think the same as we have for hundreds of years....incorrectly. Taylor was judged after being murdered. If he was white we wouldn't even be discussing this. The topic would be about his NFL accomplishments, how he was a great dad, the support from the NFL and fans, and how the police had already caught the suspects. Not the case though. Comback to THAT? I think not. Peace and Blessings

It is also obvious that spoiled white guys need to grow up, put down the crystal meth, stop mass shooting, deal with life choices and quit going on a rampage because mommie didnt buy you that car!

  • Posted By: mark99505 @ 12/06/2007 12:20:36 AM

its obvious and statistics prove that black men need to grow up. turn off their b.sht music. and actually realize that the player " is the white guy" who works on wall street. with hundreds of black men earning his record company money... white college student aspires to be engineer .. black student aspires to be rapper..

This is very sad. Little Jackie Taylor will grow up without her father, who apparently changed his life for her. This is a lesson worth remembering. There's a lot of work to be done to help young black men who have bleak futures ahead of them.... As a black father, I'm very concerned about the plight of black children. We as a society do not need to demonize any one single group. This only hurts us all. We must learn to look into the causes and come up with cures. We can do it, if we care. All young men of all races are currently facing rage issues. We must re-focus and channel that behavior and attitude into positive attitudes and behaviors. It's a great challenge, but if we care, we'll do it! What will young women have for husbands in the future? I pray that you'll see that this problem has far- reaching effects... Everyone can help if they care! E-mail mme with possible solutions....

Well well, just saw on the news that some guy killed 9 people at a mall in Nebraska. I bet you my bling bling that he is a White Guy. The media will try to spin this as a poor tormented soul who just had a bad day!

Well well, some guy just killed 9 people at a mall in Nebraska. I will bet the ranch that he is a white guy. Lets see if the media will spin the THUG ISSUE. No, they will say that he was a poor tormented kid that lost his mind!

NOT ONLY YOUNG BLACK MEN ARE VIEW AS THUGS. AGE does not matter as long as you are a black male IN AMERICAN . ASK BLOOMBERG MAYOR OF NEW YOUK CITY WHO CALLED AN EDUCATED HARD WORKING BLACK MAN A THUG. BECAUSE HE CALLED FOR A STRIKE FOR BETTER BENEFITS AT NYC MTA.

  • Posted By: Socrtez @ 12/05/2007 3:57:13 PM

Name calling and watching movies has nothing to do with the problems we are having with young black men. "Parents".... Try educationing them so that they can raise young men and not want-to-be thugs. All this talk about people using the N word is just a cover up for the real problem. The lack of education and role models. You want the youth not to look up to TV hero's, but I do not see Jesse, AL, or any of the rest of them touching the hood other than to say stop using this word or that word and you will make it. BS! Let's keep it real black males rep 65% of those locked up and 1 out of 5 will lose his life. Not using the N word is not going to change anything. I believe we need to invest in some young men that can reach the youth and stop making excuses for sorry parents!
