It is appalling that this discussion can begin to point fingers. I have read of the thug mindset of African Americans before brought ot US soil yet we call it patriotism when US soldiers invade other countries and kill and maim for something that we have no business being there for and we have publicized the wayward black male yet we give no attention to the black male who pushes to succeed. We pretend that honest African Americans are "not like the rest, (I have heard that all my life) and we ignore hard working people and treat them based on what is sensationalized. How does so many African Americans become professionals if they are all thugs. This country has told African Americans how bad they are from the beginning and now they continue to publicize and sensationalize the poor behaviour but the press will not touch a decent story. Last year Dr. Pepper named me one of twenty three people nationwide who makes a difference in the community and not one news station would touch the press releaes. Dr. Pepper presented a check to a non profit organization in my name and the only people who knew were those present. Dr. Pepper sent press releases to the local news here in Grand Rapids and had I been Dutch, it would have been picked up not only locally but throughout the state. Because I am African American there was no word...So you see, even the media plays a part in the stigma given to African Americans. I organized a rally at the Lincoln Memorial this past August and the media wouldn't touch it www.dcrally2007.com GO FIGURE I have a Fatherhood Summit and prayer vigil scheduled for January 4, 2008. The press releases have been sent. Lets see what comes of that.

So, Rev, did Dr. Pepper send your picture with this press release? If not, how did they KNOW you were black? Put the crutch away, and begin standing on your own two feet like a man.

        Dear Mr. Smith,
It's wonderful that you are working hard to be a positive influence, but please learn how to spell. That goes for most of the rest of you. The dumbing down of America makes me sick!

Watch shows like cops, lapd or any of the law enforcement shows and 70% of the calls are black people commiting crime...i see black people acting like fools in real life, always cussing, talking loud, causing trouble and commiting crimes, all races do the same things...the problem with blacks..it seems like its dam near every one that you meet....you are your own problem..get a education...every black person i meet has a education of a 3rd grader....at least 80% that i meet and thats alot...plus your all racist as hell...first to scream discrimination and first to show it....there will be no peace as long as you keep being ignorant. Even when you aquire fame and fortune you can't keep away from your drugs or crime. Look at all the famous black people that flushed it down the toilet....alot more in proportion to the blace race compared to other races.

The Q, your gene pool must come from the Jerry Springer show. Springer is despised by whites because he exposed the side of white America the regular media refuses to. They constantly focus on that image of blacks. Until someone black begins to edit the 5pm news or decide what shows are aired that image will never change. Just take a ride out to the big sky country and New England and see who dominates the prison landscape. Go to the Bureau of Justice Statistics and see the real numbers on who is commiting crimes and shut your face. The ignorance of your whole statement says more about you than anyone black. I bet a black guy took your lunch money when you were a kid, or beat you up or even worse took your girl. Let it go go see Oprah or Dr. Phil for some therepy

I find many of these comments disturbing because I see that we as a HUMAN race are focusing on unnecessary issues as opposed to reaching out to one another. There are countless individuals, and especially children, of every race that need nurturing and love. It is our responsibility to reach out and make a difference for as many people as we can. This divisiveness is counterproductive and will help no one. There is degradation, self-loathing and intolerance in every ethnicity. Let's encourage an end to that! That is something worth championing for - across all 'groups' - not just our own. Our responsibility is not just to our 'own people', but to all people! I choose to love and admire the positive aspects of all people, with the understanding that we all have a purpose to fulfill. I choose for my purpose to be impactful. I choose to love.

When Dr. King decided it was time for our voices to be heard, he did not waste time making excuses or blaming someone else for our own destruction. We need to take a good look at ourselves and take responsibility. My parents raised seven children in the stereo type "ghetto", and decided that if they wanted to change the outlook for their children, they had to remove the mentality from our thinking that the "ghetto" is all there is. If we continue to degrade, attack, victimize our own, how do you expect others to respond????????

again..your missing the point.."in proportion to your race" another uneducated idiot succuming to primate emotionalism...as stated again...all races do the same things...pointing out two whites doesn't prove anything other than your just another uneducated numskull trying to defend your barbaric stupidity. Please your draining the gene pool...get fixed. I KNOW WHAT I SEE IN REAL LIFE....NOTHING SUPERCEDES THAT...SO DON'T GET YOUR DIAPERS IN A UPROAR..ANY QUESTIONS??

Blacks perpetuate this thug image as much as anyone because of the percieved empowerment it brings. Live hard and die hard is a motto, not just for "thugs" and "gangstas" but many black youth who see this violent aspect of black culture as being the totality of black culture. To blame the media a.ka. the white man. albeit implicitly, is to deny blacks the powerful voice in shaping and determining their destiny. Blacks are not victims, they are powerful actors on their own behalf, and the behalf of other groups, for good and for ill. Black=Victim is a cliche that is perpetuated by the black political leadership and white, northern hypocrites to make themselves feel better about a series of negative choices made daily by a large percentage of the black population, a population made up of a disproportioniate number of individuals who individually make foolish, shortsighted, and selfish decisions. By disproportionate I mean that a higher percentage of black individuals will make decisions not in their own, or society's long term interest. Empower blacks by illustrating their own capacity for self-development, for group development, and for positive changes in society, not by espousing the Black=Victim party line.

Sorry, but environment does shape outlook in life. Your environment shaped you to be what you are today, has it not? Despite the "good blacks" that see further than the thug life, blacks are overwhelmingly the product of the environment that was sentenced to them from the second slave owners used brutal psychological tactics to make blacks believe they were nothing more than chattel.

      • Posted By: MAC16 @ 12/27/2007 1:08:23 PM

So lets say for a second that environment shapes our outlook on life. WHO CARES! I'm white and let me tell you something I'm not racist or prejudice I just don't care. So you a person has a hard environment that doesn't give anybody an excuse to act like an idiot. I manage a large business and let me tell you I have no problem hiring black people because the only color that matters here is green but let me tell you something if a man comes in dressed like soulja boy do you think I am going to hire him? Hell no I'm not, but then he runs out and says "I didn't get that job because I'm black". I get calls from our home office often asking why I didn't hire this black person or that one, and everytime its the same story, "thug bone". So you tell me where does "societies perception of black men" and the way black men "really are" differ? Please tell because I am all ears, I really want to know. I want to know because I am not sure if a lot of people realize the difference between prejudice and just not caring.

It's certainly out of contol, and media doesn't make it any better. Everybody has a little part or a larger part in it. I personally do not see anything glamorous or productive about being protrayed as a thug, or gangster, or a violent person. To often most of it seems to lead to death, jail, or permanent serious injuries, and disabilities. Not to mention the wasted talents, creative abilities and discoveries that our young men once had. Our communities suffer for it. Every family has to make a conscious effort to train our young men to stay from these kind of mental mindsets and behaviors. With Damned and incorrect Videos,Movies,Films,
Songs, etc, our destiny is tied into how we shape our communities, and not let someone define who we are ourselves. Till @12/27/2007 3:13 am

Just look in the media of entertainment and you will see the images of young black men being portrayed as thugs. Honestly, you can't tell me that they don't do it on purpose! Look at rap videos that glorify the use of guns and flashing large sums of cash and their sports cars and jewelry and woman who are viewed as their personal property for sex. The woman don't help themselves either by allowing themselves to be portrayed this way. There is too much emphasis on materialistic values in America's culture. We need to start placing the emphasis on getting a good education in high school and move into college and pursue a degree. American families need to spend more time around the dinner table at dinner time getting to know each other. Parents need to hold themselves accountable for the raising of their children with good values and discipline, i.e. no more of your pathetic excuses. Parents need to get off the couch, turn off the T.V. and engage themselves in their childrens lives.

  • Posted By: nu_cat1992 @ 12/26/2007 5:44:15 PM

Parents are allowing their children to carry on this b/s. Not stereotypes perpetuated by the media etc. Stereotype is defined as a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group. Nothing negative there. The problem is when you take a stereotype and apply it to everyone. Truth: Some black people eat chicken - Stereotype: All black people eat chicken. Truth: there are some thugs in the black community - Stereotype: the black community is made up of thugs. So, if we concentrate on getting "some thugs" out of our community, then the stereotype should disappear.

Last year, a high school kid in Chicago Blair Holt was killed by another teenage boy. A gang banger that his mother said, "Was a good boy that fell into the wrong crowd." Not sure about you, but good and gun don't really go hand in hand. At the end of the day, we need to take responsibilty for our selves and our children. We need to stop making excuses and actually do something about the problems in our community. The change has to start at home...

It makes me sick that this article has so many good points but still misses the point. I'm sorry but if you have to plead down from an aggravated assault charge, then to me your a thug. I can understand that you can be reformed, which is a whole other topic of its own. As for the rest of the article, it makes a point that is very true. I feel like the black upper middle class this the bastard child to this culture of Black debauchery. Peer pressure in my neighbor hood, was to be something, like get a college degree, and move along. That's what all us little Black kids did. But it seems to me that getting an education isn't a priority to anyone, Black or White. Once the athletic dream is gone, what are you let with??? I wish more people would stand up and say enough is enough. I think much of the sexualization of Black women needs to get turned on its head. No one will care, because If men believe that women think its cool and sexy, then it's ok. It soesn't seem to me that anyone (women) are saying no don't do that, on a large scale. We as Black women need to step up and say that's not cute. I want YOU to do and be more for me. I'm not a toy nor am I a playground. Respect me first, then I MAY POSSIBLY respect you. Maybe that will shake some stuff up.

Regardless of whether people choose to believe it or not, racism and unfair portrayal by the media is as much of a culprit in the destruction of the image of black men in this country as their own actions are. I'm a black woman and in my opinion, the media outlets in this country have an economic interest in perpetuating myths and stereotypes daily. From television shows that portray black men as crime perpetrators, to news programs who regularly plaster the faces of black suspects during their nightly reports - it's difficult to escape the fact that our men are seen as criminals -whether guilty or not. Think about it....whenever I watch a news report, it's more likely that when the suspect is black, images will appear. However, when the suspect is white, unless it's a very high profile crime, their picture in rarely shown. Now, that's not to say that as black people, we don't have a certain level of personal accountability. In fact, we have the most. But to say that the media does not influence the national and global image of black is naive and ridiculous.

Our entertainment world is still there for whites to laugh at us. Unlike the black and white days of TV land when we played the fools/clowns in movies for alls entertainment, it???s a different era now. Now, we are being laughed at in a different way. We???re being laughed at because we are allowing people to make FOOLS out of us, because we are destroying ourselves. Thank God that Oprah is producing a positive movie about blacks, The Great Debaters. Why can???t our race produce doctors, lawyers, scientist or chemist? Why does our race have to be focused on producing rappers who degrade our women and empower us for negativity? Out of the one rapper who gets rich off of making degrading music, there are about one hundred whites that are getting rich from our stupidity...rather they're the lawyers, accountants, publishers, camera man, judges, store owners, car dealership, etc that a rapper needs to make himself famous. And from that one famous black rapper or glorified gangster, we produce thousands of troubled kids. Black people wake the blank up!!!!!!!!! Our lack of education is a death sentence for our people. You are destroying our race faster than a white slave master ever did.
