The Gates Keeper

The man in charge of America's warmaking machinery is also the best insurance it won't be used against Iran.

Finally someone, in this cabinet of incompetants, who makes sense. While my grandson was on his third tour in Iraq, he was subjected to a motivational speech from one of this admistrations poster-boys. When he was finished he asked the men for their opinions. My grandson told him he reminded gun of Hitler's Goebles. The poster-boys response was "Who?" Not only are they "parrots" they are uneducated parrots.

    November can't come soon enough.

Today McCain announced that he "hates war." If McCain hates war so much, why does he want to bomb Iran and stay in Iraq for 100 years? He knows the war is unpopular and is trying to make himself look like a dove. He is trying to re-write history. Everybody knows McCain is a hawk. Now he's pretending to hate war.

At the same time, he tells you : "You should be very, very afraid. The world is full of terrorists and only hawks like me can keep you safe."

Does anybody else see the irony of this? He's playing a double game.

Besides, it was the hawks (like Cheney, et al) who got us into this mess, and it's the tough diplomats (like Obama) who will get us out. Hawks make you unsafe because they incite anger and war-like behavior by running around threatening people. Diplomats make you safe because they diffuse anger and open new ways for other people to express their greivances without war or terrorism. For example, look what Kennedy did with the Bay of Pigs incident. The Soviet Union had nuclear missiles in Cuba, aimed at Miami and Washington DC. Kennedy got them to remove their missiles, peacefully. He had lots of other options. He could have attacked Cuba or attacked Russia. He could have started WW III. But he didn't. He used TOUGH diplomacy, the same kind that Obama is advocating.

    It works.

The families of US military personnel who lost their lives in India during World War IIl hope that during his February visit to India Defense Secretary Gates and Indian Defense officials will solidify the January agreement on joint US-Indian recovery operations in India's Northeast, where the eight-member crew of the US aircraft "Hot as Hell" were killed in 1944. If a recovery operation is completed in 2008, that would mark a major milestone in US-Indian humanitarian cooperation. Gary Zaetz Nephew of Lt. Irwin Zaetz, navigator of the "Hot as Hell"

    * Because she didn't want to go.

People lets take a breath here, stop and think, How much health care can you buy for $44,000.00 per person/ per year? This is how much we as Americans are spending each on this war. Ask yourselves this, which candidate has said they would end the war now? Yes there is one who voted NO for the war running. Now to me that???s the guy who is worth voting for, its time for a change and its time for American politics to go to the Doctor. Join the revolution, join the teaparty07! Make your vote mean something vote Liberty, Peace Prosperity??? Ron Paul.

The Military is hardly a series of automatons with no moral or legal responsibility for their acts.
    [ I disagree fully ]
Thank you for your service no insult intended. Vet to Vet! We follow orders, good or bad, and is not ours to question! EVER

    • Posted By: Braes @ 12/05/2007 1:42:02 AM

Sorry, but a majority of the Intelligence on Iran came from the military you claim to understand. Rumsfield is gone, changes have been made, and reason and truth again prevails, even when the CINC seems hell bent on having his WWIII. No, we do not follow unlawful orders at all. We go to the JAG, or resign, or accept reassignment after making a formal protest. Some are Courts Martialed. Others quietly retire.

If he is the best in war making machinery, i hope he brings it all home, to US soil, or we will run out of spare parts on the battle field, in the furture! If we must spend 2 BILLION A DAY in Iraq, or anywhere, Let the 2 BILLION A DAY make it back into the US economy here inside OUR borders OUR wages IN America! Would that be nice or what? Maybe rebuild our roads to, this might employ 50+ million at better than min wage for at least 10-15 years ,rebuiilding the great war machine IN OUR currently closed factories with alt fuels would ensure this, and more!

In an otherwise insightful article on Gates, the authors pen some pretty stupid commentary on U.S. government. We don't have "cabinet" government here. To suggest that Gates or any Secretary of Defense "stands in the way" of a President's war-making authority because he is in the chain of command is the stupidest remark I've ever read by national reporters. We elected the President, and the Vice President for that matter. He hardly needs the Secretary of Defense to agree on military action.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 12/03/2007 12:40:33 PM

Dear reader, without the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in agreement, the keys to the war machine do not operate. Go read the law. Cheney surrounded Bush with enablers and imbeciles. I am by the way, retired military and worked with Strategic assets. Most civilians in the United States have little to no understanding of the checks in the system to prevent any ill conceived act. The absolute myth of Presidential omnipotence is a facade of this Administration. For a decent and public example, in the last days of the Nixon Administration, Kissinger and others agreed that the President would not be allowed to order any military action whatsoever. Right down to those with the launch keys, there are safeguards. Go orders have many many hands on in and about them.
As to Cheney and Rumsfield, I might suspect that any international travel may expose them to war crimes prosectuions. I do not believe we would actively deliver them up, but to be sure, there are prosecutors in the European Union with copies of Nuremburg in their hands, just waiting for the opportunity. Romney who stated that we need more Guantanamo Bay operations and sites has proven himself wholly incompetent to lead a free society. Likewise his refusal to adhere to the General Articles of Geneva. We executed Japanese and Germans following WWII for torture and other crimes against humanity.
There is a chain of command. Gates is in it. As far as the farcical notion that Bush has unlimited authority to do as he pleases by any precedent act of Congress does not understand the limits at all and has been fed enough Kool Aid to go join the cult. We are sworn to follow lawful orders. While the Oil thieves plotted this Iraq operation, remarkably to accomplish exactly what Saddam tried to do, consolidate military control over the lions share of the worlds output, we let Osama who attacked us run free to reconstitute his forces.
Now, A President not only needs National Military assent to use of weapons, He must goto Congress within 90 days of any operation under the exigent circumstances clause of the War Powers Act. Do not embarass yourself again so publicly good man. The Military is hardly a series of automatons with no moral or legal responsibility for their acts.

      • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/03/2007 12:45:20 PM

Bush needs no chain of command with his pre-emptive powers which no president has ever been given think before you yap, today is not like the rules of engagment of yesterday!!

        • Posted By: Braes @ 12/03/2007 1:03:32 PM

Obviously, you need to go look at the law. Calmly. Rules of engagement are tactical and from theater to unit based. There are many hands in them. Military operations are strictly controlled by regulation, law and order. The fact that this Administration has often put several carts before horses does not legitimize any of it. No act of Congress repealed any of the existing law governing use of force. I do think before writing good friend. I also know what I am talking about. Shrill ad hominems do not assist your point.

          • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/03/2007 1:23:40 PM

Regulation, law and order? These do not exsist in any political arena today!

I served from 1978 till they let me go and spent 5 years in the middle east arming training and funding the same people we seek out today to kill, my history is from being there and knowing what your not allowd to see or hear as most of what i just said is public but alot is still "I'm not at liberty to say" We don't belong there and unwanted to boot! To many black bags comming from D.C. for a very very long long time, underminding what we say we want done.

your right about ligitimize, and WE are right about the cart before the horse, it is for this reason every nuclear counrty sleeps with there button under there pillows, cause they all know, we eat horses. Then call it wrong but not till AFTER the fact.

Any one who hates treasonous vipers is ok in my book -go Gates

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/03/2007 11:56:27 AM

Americans don't have the balls to try or execute those who are guilty of treason!!! Ask Rummy, and Libby and cohorts including a sitting president , who needs time before we rack him across the coals [which we will not do] cause Cheney like ALL GOP VPs are not capable to run this country let alone midgetworld!!!

      • Posted By: Braes @ 12/03/2007 12:50:16 PM

At this point in the Cabal, Bush rules by pardon authority alone. His intransigence and blaming of congress for not toe-ing his line is a joke. The First article of our constitution drives the nation, and that Constitution begins with We the People. The Imperial Presidency is a Nixonian edifice, ressurected by Nixonites hired by Cheney.

Based on this article, one wonders what a difference the appointment of Gates from the beginning would have done for the administration and for the country. I thought of Rumsfeld as an egocentric loyalist who could be dangerous sort of like a family pitbull, but this article almost paints him as a dangerous neurotic. I suppose Gates is certainly a breath of fresh air to those who work for him and perhaps those who are his colleagues -- not to mention the majority of people everywhere who consider what kind of leader Rumsfeld was.

No war in Iraq. Osama dead. Afghanistan rebuilt after 40+ years of war. World respect and allies willing to take a turn at the UN denouncing radicalism. Peace.

thats a great dream but if we did not have Bush then your dreams would become real but only if Bush did not get into office at all

Highlights why a vice president with no political ambitions of his own should NOT be allowed to make national security policy decisions.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 12/03/2007 12:45:46 PM

Cheney hired himself then hired all of the staff. Bush let him run the show. The great Decider was merely a rubber-stamp. Most alcoholics live by and through enablers.

The simple truth is to ???love thy neighbor??? and stop making enemies around the world.

The rest of the world is silenced with America???s aggression towards weaker nations. Once America runs out of money, the rest of the world would despise the people of America.

While America is still strong in finance and military power, it is good to build good relationships with other nations: allies and non-allies. Good deeds are always better than bad deeds.

Al Gore has proven to be a better man after he lost his presidential election in 2000, whereas, George Bush is despised by many both domestically and internationally, even though he is the most powerful man on earth.

Al Gore is happy for doing good things. If Gates is smart enough, he should advise the President to withdraw from Iraq immediately. This will save the lives of many young and health US soldiers and many Iraqi civilians.

    • Posted By: t9900 @ 12/03/2007 10:06:02 AM

It will not save Iraqi civilains. In the long run doing that will cost more American and Iraqi lives.

      • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/03/2007 12:41:20 PM

it will only cost Iraqui lives, as it has for 3000 years, minus the time Hussain was Dictator as no klan squabbles or civil war was present during his term! American lives?? how do you figure, not one of those responsable for the WTC were Iraqui, in fact we had no threats from Iraq, after 91 when ALL WMDs were destroyed on CNN, but they did dance in the streets when it fell, but that's no reason to waste American blood for, or Israel would be next as they to danced!!! Pull out of Iraq and we will not lose another American life, for them or due to them!! Has no historical value to state that we Americans will lose life if we leave!! If it were Saudi Arabia you were discussing you would be right, as that's where the terrorist came from who DID take out the WTC!!!!! Iran had nothing to do with the WTC, or any terror attack on US soil either!!!

  • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 12/03/2007 12:15:50 PM

Nice but inaccurate!!! When the GOP congress and GOP senate GAVE GW pre-emptive power [way more power than Chaves was hoping for] Gates cannot stop Bush from a phone call to launch, it is his pre-emptive right, our old fully GOP Government gave him. We can only pray that Gates is a show stopper, or we will be in Iran for nothing, before he leaves office, and we cannot kill or impeach him, cause Cheney is a putz who cannot run this country for a day,,, kinda like Quail!!!

  • Posted By: skivolkl @ 12/03/2007 11:02:30 AM

Sec. Gates is an exceptionally bright, pragmatic and valuable asset to an otherwise chaotic, immature, dysfunctional gang of dangerous administration bullies. He is a tactical and stragegic thinker who views the univiverse of issues facing America and the world within a rationale construct. I only wish he would serve in the next administration whoever it may be. Thank you Bob Gates

And who's fault is it that partisanship no longer stops at the waters' edge. Is it any wonder that you can only find this rag on the floor of a gasoline station bathroom.

  • Posted By: ChuckfromAlbany @ 12/03/2007 9:34:42 AM

Thank God for Bill Gates. At least Bush couldn't screw this one up. Bush was finally forced to concede that his neo-con and old boy agenda just doesn't work. Dick Cheney has to be one of the most dangerous politicians of the History of the United States. It is with great relief that we have someone who has the guts and will to at least stand up to this very dangerous man since Bush is incapable of doing so.
