Wowee!!! So Texas governor Rick Perry is going to build a highway across Texas financed by a foreign firm Cintra-Zachary. This is even a bigger scam than Perry???s decision, at the request of Tom DeLay, to replace the districting plan created by a non-partisan commission with a district plan gerrymandered to ensure a permanent Republican majority. If I were a stockholder with Cintra-Zachary, I???d insist on control over all the underpasses and overpass that cross the superhighway. I???d set up toll booths on those over passes as well as toll booths on the high way. . If a Texan wants to see Aunt Millie on the other side of the highway, I???d make him or her pay, pay, pay. The same applies to the high way itself. In the winter, when the folks in the Mid-West need fuel oil, I???d charge a free market toll for oil delivery trucks. Again pay, pay, pay. I wonder if Cintra-Zachary will go public so that I can buy stock and reap a fortune. Besides enriching me, has it occurred to anyone that any one can get control of Cintra-Zachary? All they have to do is buy 51% of the stock. That of course includes Mamoud Ahmandinejad, Al Qaeda or any of their operatives. We???re opening the door to terrorists, and this is being done by a righteous, anti-terrorist Republican.
However, I might point out that Ron Paul is hardly a person to point fingers at others. His libertarian philosophy requires putting the entire Interstate system for sale to the highest bidder. Because the libertarians do not believe in any interference with the mechanisms of the free market, any terrorist organization, including Al Qaeda, could set up a dummy corporation to buy any section of the interstate they wanted to fund their terrorist activities. As an Angeleno, I can???t help but think of what would happen if the Interstates in California were privatized. In the event of a wildfire - (and thanks to global warming and the libertarians??? refusal to see global warming as a serious problem, we???ll see more wildfires, not less), you could jack up the tolls by 1000%. You only need to ask terrified refugees how badly they want their family to escape the fire and charge what the free market allows. You could even hire torches to start wildfires, so you could make more money. As far as the law goes, the Bush Administration has proven there???s no real right and wrong. The only think that counts is a political contribution. So simply throw a little money to the right set of Republicans, and the government will look the other way. I???m really ???thrilled??? about all the prospects of the libertarian free market utopia. It???s just too bad that I???m really too principled to take advantage of them.
