To Expect the stability after elections under Musharraf's regime is like to involve yourself in day dreaming with all your consciousness. You cannot expect a fairness from the person whose own persona as a president is badly disputed and controversial. He could easily have been declared disqualified for the presidential post by SC, Had he not ordered the crackdown on the entire Judiciary on November 3rd. Hung Pariliament seems to be the better idea for musharraf to continue enjoying undisputed powers without any potential threat to him. I don't see pakistan coming out of this nightmare unless our president will step down from his post.

Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif stand for everything that is wrong with Pakistan today. Today they clamor for an independant judiciary and a free media, but one must go back a decade to remember that Sharif actually manhandled the Supreme Court by personally sending his political workers and commandos inside the Court to appeal against a decision which went against him. As folklore goes, after they had manhandled the senior Judges the brother of Mr. Sharif served these political 'terrorists' tea at the PML headquarters! Talk of double standards!
Similarly in Mr. Sharif's time press freedom was unheard of. Not only was there just one state-owned channel in the country but even newspapers, given a free reign by the present regime, were gagged. Infact Najam Sethi, Pakistan's most prominent journalist was arrested and kept in custody for 4 months because he wrote against the government.
Under Mr. Sharif Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves had dwindled to such a low that the World Bank had precipitated a financial meltdown and the name "failed state" couldn't have been more accurate. To add to the woes, Mr. Sharif looted billions of rupees from the exchequer and built a financial empire that is reminiscent of the one built by the former Thai PM, Thaksin Sinawatra. Thaksin was driven out of power by Thais because of his accumulation, Sharif deserved similiar.

It is therefore mystifying when this man has the audacity to stand up for everything that he himself could be accused against. Even worse is having respected journalists like Mr.Amir supporting him, when his own article archives show the sort of venom he had against Mr.Sharif's then-regime. Clearly, this is the worst form of croneyism ever.

    Shaista your facts are
    1) "Every Pakistani nerves are burnt out"
No life for the average person is the same prior to the emergency, much to the disappointment of the oppisition parties. People are going to work/school/ weddings etc
2)" Munir Malik had renal failure due to imprisomnment"
Yes he had renal failure but not cos of imprisonment, but he had a pre- existing condition. In fact he has Categorically denied torture allegations. Here is a link to one many articles where he denied govt involvement in his health condition.
    http://www.dawn.com/2007/11/26/top10.htm
    3) "the lawyers and Justice Iftikar targetted by the govt"
Yes they were targeted and rightfully so, they have become a political party which is not their purpose
This atmosphere under Musharaf not perfect but is much open and better than the Benazirs and Sharifs
In those two's tenure political assinations were all the rage
Benazir has been implicated even on her brothers murder (Murtaza Bhutto) cos he was coming out as an opponent. Here is a link to Fatima Bhutto's story
    http://www.despardes.com/articles/2007/20070920-fatima-bhutto.htm
Your facts are half facts, which is worse then lying

Any one can justified the facts bellow and why these brutals act were exercised,
It is true that almost every Pakistani???s nerves have been burned out. Those, for whom President Musharraf???s special ire is reserved, including the Supreme Court judges, led by the CJP, along with the lawyers, journalists and politicians, they are being particularly targeted. A notable example is Munir A. Malik, who was a member of the team of lawyers that had defended Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry against the president???s reference.

First, his home in Karachi was fired upon a few days before the carnage of May 12, but he and his family were lucky to escape unhurt. Now, after the imposition of the emergency (read martial law) on Nov 3, Mr Malik was held incommunicado in a prison. During this time, his condition deteriorated so much that he had to be shifted to a hospital due to renal failure and put on dialysis, apart from suffering from a liver malfunction.
His colleagues allege that he and some others had been subjected to ???rough treatment??? by the authorities (Nov 25), while hospital sources have said he is in ???acute condition??? as a result of criminal negligence and delay in medical treatment (Nov 26).
Is this the kind of ???democracy??? America wants in Pakistan? What is extremely disturbing is that the Bush administration knows that its unflinching support for the dictatorial regime has emboldened it to treat its opponents very brutally and arbitrarily. All the talk of democracy, freedom and human rights from Washington is nothing but hypocrisy and its contempt for the rights of the Pakistanis has been thoroughly exposed.

Compare this with a statement and activism of the Canadian PM Steven Harper at the recent Commonwealth meeting. According to the Toronto Star of Nov. 23, he said that Canada and its partners now must bring what extra pressure they can to ensure that the people of Pakistan are heard, not the generals.

In Mr Harper???s words, Musharraf???s ???flagrant disregard??? for freedom, democracy and the law makes him unfit for high office. He should go. The people of Pakistan can do better. Is anyone in Washington listening?

If US with us, then it must act accordingly by demanding the restoration of the judiciary, resignation of Musharraf from the post of the president, as well and the formation of a truly neutral caretaker government to hold the elections.

Shaista, please state facts not crazy theories.
I feel sorry for u as your emotional/ delusional,/agenda ridden beliefs have no bearing to the ground reality , therefore life must be tough for you.
Every Pakistani I know, are absolutely astounded that Sharif and Benazir have the audacity to talk of "Democracy" and "Freedom". They showed none of these qualities in their reign .
In fact the buzz phrase in the Pakistani community is "the robbers are back"
In karachi poor folks are complaining how they haven't been paid yet for turning up at Benazir's rally

I'm sorry but the commentator below is a blind believer in conspiracy theories. I won't be surpised if she even linked the terror attacks on America to the 'Zionist' club.

The truth is that while Musharraf has made mistakes, he is far better a ruler than either Bhutto or Sharif. And every Pakistani knows that. The only supporters these people have are poor, illiterate villagers who are coaxed to attend their rallies and congregations for a small pocket money and a chance to see the 'city'. Moreover, these villagers only vote for them because they are commanded to by their fuedal lords. Since Sharif and Bhutto have close ties with these fuedal lords, they manage to sweep every general election.
This is the worst form of croneyism in the world. So the next time you see Benazir or Nawaz surrounded by 'hundreds' of supporters, remember where they came from, and the fact that they know little or nothing about their corrupt, ineffective and selfish ways.

Musharaf is a selfish and power hungry person and any thing good cannot be expected or even imigine from him
He will do any thing upto the maximum even to destroy his own country or the world for the sake of power
The World should expect the Atom Bomb in the hands of terrorist and will be exposed when Musharaf realize that the world support for him is no more
Some reliable sources says that few of the Atomic Bombs were moved to some remote Area and the security of that Area were hand over to some reliable terrorist group and with instructions to announce as and when informed for to do so
Musharaf planned to validate this step and announced earlier that a danger and possibility of controlled Pakistan Nuke by terrorist group
When he realized that international pressure is mounted for his resignations' from President ship then probabily he announce that the Atomic Bomb is in the hand of terrorist group and they were easily moved that any where in the world
With further justifications that I have the power to capture that group and make the world safe

He todate since capturing the power make the world fool that i am the one who fight against terrorism but no one to ask that how you succeded
For the sake of power he destroy all most all institutions, dashed to ground the constitutions and now making grounds for to select those bloody politicians who just need a bone

This is Pakistan where all bloody steps and actions are excercised for one man

And a man who just need to make the pcs of the country and make the world unsafe

Though Musharraf's regime may not follow democracy principles to the dot, and though it may also have its domestic problems such as increasing car and cell phone thefts, it is by far better than regimes under Bhutto and Sharif, and not to forget Pakistan's worst ruler, Altaf Hussain of the MQM.
Just as we knew about Bhutto's corruptions only after her rule ended, we cannot judge how honest Musharraf has been to Pakistan's taxpayers and the treasury, nor has Musharraf rule been bloodless (marred by suicide bombs and political massacres). To be neutral, all rulers did something or the other for Pakistan's betterment as well as for its decline.
A military dictator may be good for a misguided, largely illiterate third world country such as Pakistan, but most military dictators soon find the temptation to stay on the throne too much to let go of it when the time is right, and that is their shortcoming.

Musharraf has a maximum time of five more years now. I dont see how he can extend his political life after that. The best thing for him to do during his last tenure is to ensure Pakistan's next government comprises of honest, fresh faces who want to loyally contribute to the country and can also withstand the bullying of parties such as the PPP, MQM and PML-N/Q

Pakistan's biggest criminals are not the Taliban's or Al-Qaeda, but Bhutto and Nawaz Shariff. They are the most corrupt individuals in the world. I am surprised they have not yet made it to the FBI's most wanted list. Mussharaf should have killed them both when he had a chance! What we see on TV in the US are a handful of illiterate losers who are dancing on the streets and making demands, all these people are hired by these politicans to act and on the streets, they get paid for doing act their stupidity. The low-life attorney's that live off of the politicians and were the ones being showed on the street protesting - REST of the country does not care for any of this! If both of these criminals were dead tomorrow by some miracle of God, people of Pakistan will not moron for one day!

Before you hear their arguments on the 'independance of the Supreme Court' read this op-ed in a Pakistani newspaper.

I think every article on Pakistan's political crisis needs to underscore the corrupt and ineffective regimes of Benazir and Nawaz in the 1990's. These two are Prime Ministers who looted the exchequer, built mansions abroad and left the country in a position of ultimate dissarray. Now they return 8 years later, purged of their sins, arguing for the sovereighnity of the Supreme Court and the fairplay of elections. Do they not remember the ransacking of the Court in their time? Or the massive rigging orchestrated by both on multiple occasions in the 1990's? And for all the political stability they demand, they must remember that their time was marked by the worst instability Pakistan has seen in its history. It was the time when the much bally hooed Taliban was BORN. It was the time when Pakistan was close to being declared bankrupt by the World Bank. A time when we were constantly at daggers with India. A time when people were afraid of getting out of their houses after 9 pm, so bad was the law and order situation.

Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto have given nothing, absolutely NOTHING to Pakistan other than corruption, instability and a history of dirty politics. Shame on them, and shame on respected journalists like Mr. Amir, who conveniently forget their own past vociferous criticisims of the Sharif-Bhutto era only to enjoy the comforts of the Parliament. If any of these leaders, and their sycophants ala Mr.Amir were genuine in their efforts for Pakistan, they would end their political careers and leave the path open for fresh leadership.

In Sharif Tenure (his buddies stormed the Supreme Court, caused mayhem overturned furniture etc etc And then Sharif's brother served them tea !)
Benazir in her tenure, she is accused of political assassinations ( one of them being her brother) and taking bribes kickbacks
As for the Justice Chaudry, he became a Supreme Court Justice under Musharaf , in fact Chaudry is the judge who took the oath of presidency from Musharaf in his first term.
Paks justice system does not need to be restored but reformed, anyone with a case in court languishes for years and yrs. Only if you grease their hands with money does it any effect.
These so called political protesters are nothing but thugs and mafioso, who see their way of life threatened under Musharaf's reforms.
