Wow, gunner - you are the reason the opinon of America abroad was the biggest loser. Sir, you wear your facist ideals on your sleve - very un-patriotic..The U.S. military - no matter what Fox tells you is diminished and not ready for another war..You must not have any friends in the military sir - you speak like an ignorant hermit who knows very little about world views..I am sorry for you and for anyone that has to put up with you in real life...As for the matter about Iran - Ok the the intelligence comes back and says one thing and Bush and his thugs want to do another - this sounds frightfully similar to an earlier situation which quickly turned into a quagmire...President Bush/Cheney you only have a small time left in the white house..if theres anytime to take a Vacation its now - go off to your ranch and STOP TOUCHING THINGS in the white house - I guarantee the world will be better for it.

    • Posted By: LODESTONE @ 12/05/2007 11:59:25 PM

and so is the USA filled with a strong people who, if they ever wake up and shed themselves of pride and predjuice, will still be able to show the world that the old Greeks may have gotten a thing or two right.

Newsweek is really sad. First of all if Iran halted their nuclear program in 2003 that's a great victory for Bush, what happen in 2003??? rememeber the invasion in Iraq.....two down, first Libya gave up their nuclear and now Iran halted theirs. Also note the difference Qaddafi came clean and his program was pickup by us, Iran still lies and deceives and they ONLY halted their program. Some work still needs done there, tough stance is working.. Bush's speech in Oct is keeping the pressure on and its working. Let the big boys do their job, don't screw it up for them and us. Remember 6 years after 911 no attacks, don't argue with success.

    • Posted By: okie_magic @ 12/05/2007 11:51:43 PM

Don't argue with success, let the big boys do their job? Are you kidding?

Don't you think that extended, tough negotiations with the Iranians and Libyans could have led to a deal on their nuclear programs? Instead, it took 4000 dead US soldiers, several hundred thousand dead and 2 million displaced Iraqis and a half a trillion dollars flushed down the toilet.

Thank God the adults are now in charge at the DOD and the CIA. Maybe now we can return to sanity, take up where we left off after 9/11 and hold Mr. Bin Laden accountable for his crimes.

You righties need to learn to think for yourselves instead of following the herd and getting all your news from Fox.

Everyone knows the Bush administration has been a horrible failure. We as American citizens, the free, should be concerned about our countries foreign affairs. Is it too radical to say these past events have highly "embarassed" our country?. I would say it is. I begin to wonder everyday if we as citizens and media are the ones embarassing the country. Pride in our country is declining, and our self-pitying citizens do nothing more than criticize every event. I am not pro-war and I do feel the war in Iraq should never have happened. War is not a solution, but support the soldiers please, if I could wake up in the morning and read one comment in the papers which mentioned the sacrifices of every soldier; I would be very satisfied. By the way, thanks to the NIE our president has not been presented with false information; thus starting a conflict to stop Iraq from controlling non-existent WMD's. American citizens take pride in our country, and remember why we are the super power of the earth.
"He insulted me, he beat me, robbed me!"
Think this way and hatred never ends.
"He insulted me, he beat me, robbed me!"
Give this up and in you hatred ends.
Not by hate is hate defeated; hate is
Quenched by love. This is eternal law."

as an iranian, i am glad to learn about NIE's report. i lived in US for 12 years, i beleive there is more grounds for friendship between iranians, and americans than any other time. i hope to see american intellectuals, and media start buildind a friendly relation between 2 nations. the fox media type of news is very harmful, and it better ends. Iranian news and media has changed its propagands towards US but we do not see the same change in us. IT is better for the world to start diplomatic relations based on respect. war, or disputes in any level will damage both nations, i beleive americans politicians , and iranians can slowly negotiate and bring both nations together. It is obvious that zionist lobby is strong in senate and will not allow that to happen, but we all like to see iran-us relations to cherish and develop. majid D

USSR found out about Afganistan while Regan was in office, I guess we will learn our lessons eventually while Putin is at the helm in Russia. The only war to fight and win is total war. If we want to try to police the world and make it safe for democracy we should lead by example and not force the issue at the point of a gun. Right now I think we are not acting as a shining beacon on the hill in the furtherance of freedom (of course that is only an opinion and everybody here has one). I am kind of sorry to those whom I offended but that was done in good nature, let us not take ourselves too seriously, we are only men and women and not omnipotent. You guys and girls have a nice evening and remember to hug your children and tell them that you love them before you go to sleep tonight,. Peace on earth and goodwill to all men and women.

I think that iran is just scared. i dont believe we should go over there but i do believe that we should keep an eye on them. As for iraq and afganistan we did the right thing. I do believe that we had no choice but to go to war with them. its an ugly situation but we will stay with it till the end.

  • Posted By: Rempt @ 12/05/2007 11:44:38 PM

To Laki. are you kidding? War with Afghanistan---totally right; war with Iraq questionable. In case you have amnesia they were protecting Osama or were you in the same cave? The only mistake is abandoning Afghanistan for Iraq

  • Posted By: Laki @ 12/05/2007 11:29:30 PM

I agree with you shujao82. Starting the war in afganistan was the biggest mistake USA has done in all its history. They just destroyed the political balance between the country in the middle east. Now, they cannot leave Iraq until it becomes a completely stable country. Is that even possible? The more they stay in the middle east, the more America will suffer in economics. I cant find a resolution for America's actual situation, but compromising with Iran is a must. America has to chill and think more about their situation.

This is obviously written by someone who already hated Bush. And must be a comedian because he can only be joking when he said that JFK was trustworthy, or that people trusted us during his administration. Let us remember who helped to get us into the Vietnam War by saying that we were sending in 12000 "advisers" to help the South Vietnamese.

Wonderful comments from 32ndHOOAH and wcool777. Thanks for showing Newsweek that there are people with brains. whatIthink88, joseeapires, realist66, and kickbooti have good points too. I suggest you read their comments. But some of you must be nuts. One, LODESTONE, stop acting immature. If some is to be a tool here it would be you; a tool of the liberal media, especially considering your response to realist66. I can't believe the amount of hate being spewed from you Bush-bashing liberals. Its like being in a neo-Nazi gathering except its Bush/republicans and conservatives being hated instead of minorities and Jews. . Have you ever seen news from a source other than CNN or Newsweek. Come on you must be brainwashed to think half the stuff you said. The leader of Iran calls for the destruction of Israel and the first thing you do is call Bush a liar and divide us even more. Is it the medias job to produce hatred that overshadows ones ability to think using common sense? Please grow up. We all know who the next President will be to you. A liar, just like every single President that you don't agree with 100%.. Get your head out of the sand and start thinking for yourselves, not what people like Michael Hirsh tells you to think.

I think George Bush and its accomplices should be tried as war criminals (on the invasion to Iraq) if they dear to go into Iran it would be a second trial. The United Estates of North America shouldn't let those warmongers, the weapons industries' servants, satisfy their criminal desires

Revisionist history. Let's vote for another Clinton. President Bush is just cleaning their mess. Remember, Libya, Iran and don't forget North Korea have backed down off of their bully pulpits because of the actions of President Bush, just like the Soviets with Kennedy, the Soviets with Reagan and the Japanese with Truman. I appreciate these men Republican and Democrat alike for making the tough decision and standing by them in the face of ridiculous negative public opinion. Besides, do you really care what other countries think of us. We have no friends only interests and we are not isolted in that aspect. Anyone but Clinton in '08

To the author.... are you that ignorant and uneducated to think that our political system revolves completely around an America that would allow our president to make the statements about Iran over the last two years based on his word alone or "HYPE" as you call it? You have to have more sense that to think that our country bases decisions or even potential threats on a "presidents hype". You certainly can not tell that you have a biased opinion of our president and the sad part is.....their are others as equally ignorant to our nation and the amount of intelligence that we receive to think that major decisions are made based on someones "idea". I guarentee you that you would be the first reporter to report what a disgrace he was if he didn't acknowledge IRAN and they end being a threat....the amount of information traffic that is converted to intlellgence daily would blow your little mind.....and so if false infromation comes through and we find out later that it is false...so what at least we didn't minimize it. But I am sure you.....would be able to decipher what intlelligence information is pertinent and what is not. It isn't our president our president that makes "America's reputation in the world is the biggest loser:....it is reporters like you that play on peoples ignorance and write stories like this and miss lead them into thinking that President even interepts the intelligence. It comes from way down the chain...up to the Pentagon..and travels through many hands before it gets to him. So the other 40 to 60 hands the intel touched also thought it was important. But lets blame the President....nice way to put out a biased opinion. But if you swayed one....I guess you win.

I can't believe there are intelligent people in this country still blindly following our village idiot of a president, who has proven over and over and over again that he and Cheney cannot be trusted and have manipulated security reports and intelligence over the years to fit their agenda of bringing good ol' American democracy to the Middle East.

It will take years and years to rebuild America's global image. Bush's cowboy attitude and arrogance have alienated even our fiercest allies and single-handedly killed the political career of England's Tony Blair.

I didn't think I would ever start thinking like an isolationist, but the Bush presidency has led me to only one conclusion: Get the hell out of Iraq ... and to hell with the whole Middle East. We have made no attempt to understand the people. the culture or the thinking of the Iraqi people and have bungled this invasion every step of the way.

Let's get out ... bring our brave men and women home ... admit we didn't know what the hell we were doing ... and stop trying to impose our views and way of life on people who clearly do not want our help or our opinions on how they should run their country.

I can appreciate Republicans being loyal to their leader. But even some of my Republican friends are finally admitting that Bush is clueless, arrogant and incompetent, and will probably go down in history as one of our worst presidents.

First part of my comment that was lost: Very interesting book to read is "Showdown with Nuclear Iran by Michael Evans with Jerome Corsi. There are other books available on this very serious issue and I encourage everyone to take the time to read some of them. Pres. Ahmadinejad is driven by his religious belief that an apocalyptic event needs to happen in order for the Twelfth Imam, the Mahdi, to return so the conditions are right for Islamic caliphate all over the world (the nation of Islam). He has one agenda: to annihilate the infidels (Israelis and Americans). Nuclear Iran is not just a major concern for Israel and the US but should be a concern for everyone in the entire world. President Bush may not be loved by all, but he is in fact...still our President. Who's to say our intelligence is all that intelligent? They can only make decisions based on the information that is uncovered by them. Who's to say that Iran is being totally honest? They have been deceptive and uncooperative in the past and with every deception they manage to buy more time to develop their nuclear program by keeping actions

IRAN must continue to be a security concern to the United States, just as many other countries will be in the future. The current facts indicate IRAN certainly should not be attacked any time soon, unless things really change for the worse. The real problem is that IRAQ was attacked as a pre-emptive strike based on wrong information, or even more sinister motives. The drumbeat to war with IRAN was just more of the same.
I thought the German experience in WW1 AND WW11 would provide enough of a history lesson to subsequent leaders that unprovoked "pre-emptive" wars based on dubious beliefs never work out.
The World Leaders that go the route of Hitler always end up losing, and are known as War Criminals, for good reason.
The United States was justified in IRAQ WAR 1 and won a quick and nearly bloodless victory. The war goal of kicking IRAQ out of KUAIT was a clear and globally supported reason for war. The second war with IRAQ was not justified especially since the United States retained complete air superiority over IRAQ since the first war.
A war on IRAN, or attack on IRAN would require waging an unjustified aggressive war, just the issue the Nurenberg War Trials of Nazi officials addressed.
My view point does not mean that American allies, and the United States, should not remain vigilant on the IRAN question, or that a Nation directly threatned by IRAN should not be precluded from acting in it's own vital self defense interest.
Existing American treaties with America's allies and NATO should define actual American involvement. If War comes it must be declared by Congress and not started for dubious reasons by an acknowledged failure of a President who has lost the confidence of three quarters of his own citizens.
