Women are made for childbirth, even if they never pursue that part of life. We arn't meant to be anorexic sized, but most women also arn't meant to be 400 lbs. I understand genetics, health problems, etc, but you have to draw the line somewhere. You could weigh 250 and be healthy...but ony if you are made to be that size. Some women just have tiny frames....I'm a size 2 and 5'8, but not because I don't eat. I LOVE food, but I also watch what I put in my body. Sure, I eat cake, ice cream, etc....but I still make sure to eat a ton of veggies, fish etc.

    hey rugbyfit,
your comment is just down right RUDE!!!! obviously your mother never taught you some manners. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. some people that are big try everything in their power to try and change their weight yet still can't loose anything and it doesn't help when biggots like you degrade them. not everyone is a size 2 ya know. we were all made different and if you can't accept that fact then maybe you need to do something to change it. i say be healthy the way you can be. not how somone wants you to be

A little over a year ago I weighed 237 pounds, and now I am at 136 pounds. I realised it was time to get serious about my health. I used to eat a lot of Lean Cusines, Burger King, Subway, KFC, and sweets (cookies, cake, donuts, muffins, candy, etc). I gave up the Lean Cuisines, the fast food places, and all sweets except for Extra Dark Chocolate. It's taken a tremendous effort because the food industry doesn't make it easy. I have to scrutinize labels, and do the majority of my own cooking. I am convinced that the food industry are sort of like pushers, and the drugs is sugar, sodium, white flour, corn syrup, and hydrogenated oils. There is NO reason why anyone needs a double, or even triple cheeseburger, a pizza with double the toppings, that is just sheer gluttony. I have really noticed that I have very few cravings now because I have all the "drugs" out of my system.

100 lbs!! The article should be about you. Have you considered running for public office? However, you might not appeal to enough people because you're way too practical, responsible, and in touch with reality.

Reference Post by mtlaurel - The curse remark is childlish. The presenter of this article did nothing but discuss and analyze information that was meant to be informative and thought provoking. While it may be true that an overweight person could survive longer without food and hydration longer than a slender one, in this particular point in our history, the chances of needing to do that are very small.

I agree that it is important to have positive feelings about our bodies no matter what our weight may be. That coupled with b\ing mentally and physically active increases our overall health and adds quality to our life. In an ideal world people would accept each other for who they are not what they look like.

I think it's incredibly inconsiderate that you are insulting those of larger physique, no one's perfect. Although I don't agree that obesity is right, I don't criticize obese people for being fat. How about if we start making fun of people because they are ugly or because they have a weird voice? It doesn't even affect you that they're fat, seriously you need to grow up and get a life. I use to be fat actually, but then I lost a lot of weight and probably look better than half of you that are criticizing everyone. So just get over yourself and stop being jerks about it, okay? Good. If someone is fat encourage them to lose weight, don't insult them, because that doesn't make them want to lost weight at all, actually it usually makes them go the other way and eat more.

Im a 22 year old mom 5 years ago i was 5'7 and 156 pounds my Dr. told that i could probably benifit from loosing about 10-15 pounds, but if I was happy where i was at, then that was fine, I was still in a healthy range, Now, is a totaly different story. When I was 18 I meant my faince. He thought I was trying to starve myself. ( not true) He'd hand me HUGE gease filled plates of food. If i didnt eat it all he said he'd have me put in the hosiptial, and make sure his dad watch'd me to sure i stay'ed there ( his dad's a cop) Ok, wow after that and I convinced him i wasnt, I ballooned to 195 pounds. Went on a diet lost 10 pounds then found out I was gonna have a baby. My daughter made me gain 105 pounds. You my think thats BS but when she only lets me eat french fries and milk for 9 months, you try not getting fat. I cant imagine how much i would have gaind if i hadnt been working out while pregrant. Now HOLY CRAP I weighed 300ish pounds. within 5 months i dropped down to to 250. I thought i was doin good. But then my "problems" started showing up.. and i gained 20 back. in July 2007 I was told I have Postramicstress disorder, Major depresson disorder, Social Phobia, Anxieiy/panic disorder and ADD. Ok those ploblems I shoulda delt with a long time ago but didnt, i had my own way to deal with it. ok. Now im on about 9 medications that F**k with weight, some make me gain some make me loose... sence July my weight is nothing but a fat yo-yo. I very raley eat fast food, drink pop, go out to eat. Lets see the worst thing I had today? A sugar free jolly rancher. SO my point is how the F*#K is this all my fault? to all those that are asses to "big" people just know, not all of us wanted to be like this, and I cant be on alot of diets cause of the medications I take. so before you call us names, get the f**king story behind it first ***. Dont get me wrong its not healthy to be overweight, but do you really thing a big person wants to go work out at a gym after hearing something about there weight? learn to bite your tongues. and let the ones that wanna help themselfs do it in PEACE

I have a big problem with what someone said about doing away with Lane Bryant and other "fat people" stores. Some might have a health issue that could cause them to be slightly bigger than the "norm" like poly cystic ovarian syndrome, which usually collects fat around the stomach and is incredibly hard to get rid of. Now if we get rid of the stores like Lane Bryant then we have fat people walking around trying to fit into clothes that aren't meant for someone their size, and if you say big is not beautiful then I'm almost positive you wouldn't want them to be walking around with their gut hanging out of their shirt now would you? I didn't think so. Also you need to take into consideration that it takes time to lose weight you don't just snap your fingers and 30lbs falls off, it takes time. I don't support obesity and being unhealthy either, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think you have the right to condemn other people for being less healthy than you. And no I'm not fat, I just know what it feels like to be fat, and to be made fun of. So have a little consideration next time, okay? Great.

Traditional Food in Japan - Sushi and Miso Soup.
England - Meat and 3 Vege
America - Hotdogs Hamburgers Fries and Coke.

Im From NZ been living in Japan and have lost 8kg here. because the food that is available in Japan is SO much Healtier!

Availability and general consumption of fast foods in America is too widely accepted. American Society's perceptions of what is ok to eat and what is not ok needs to change.

Thanks for the practical comment. I think this is the biggest problem, people in America are so used to the bad food, and RIDICULOUS portion sizes that we think this is the norm. One of the biggest wake up calls for me was realizing how little food most of our bodies actually need to survive and function.

Fat people need to get a grip- enough- fat is not normal and should never be considered normal. The Lane Bryants of the world are doing a huge disservice to us by proclaiming fat is beautiful--it is not.. It is a drain on our pathetic health care system, ie social security, medicare, and medicare(whole different topic). While Anorexia is not desirable- Obesity is simply wrong- how do you get up in the morning and think -"hey this is the way I'm supposed to look". I was recently at a gas station/convenience store and every one in the checkout was buying soda pop(diet) in 20 oz or larger sizes and chips or chocolate bars,, except for me (gas and a lottery ticket). And people wonder why their fat???? quit eating 60 pounds of sugar a year. Political correctness is killing us-- Fat people are FAT. Fat people want to lay blame on the food industry or the fast food business'---wow-- quit going to mcdaolds and burger king and quit supersizeing your meals. Use the muscles in your arms to push yourself away from the table, and use your mind to realize the only one to blame is yourself, quit eating a ton of crap and you wont weigh a ton. Get off your ass and move....

Well I'm 5'3 and weigh in at 191lbs. I like my size! My body frame is very much different than the norm (I am Black)I'm heavier up top, small waist (no stomach!), hips, thighs and booty. Ashley Stewart says I wear a size 12 but every where else a 12/14 leaning more to 14 depending who makes the garment. When I weighed 150lbs I wore a 9/10 some 7/8's and I was always sick (Cold, flu and sinus infections). I ate all the right things (Fruits, veggies, dairy, water, etc) but I was always sickly. I gained my weight back and I rarely ever get sick! My family doctor says I am healthy! No high blood pressure, diabetes or nothing! When I was that size 9/10, I had no breasts, butt, nothing for that matter and rarely got approached by the opposite sex but when I got bigger, MAN!! I always got spoken to. Just last night I had a guy to put their phone number under my windshield wiper. I feel to each it's own. If you want to lose weight go for it but as for me I love me just the way I are.

Your genetics probably play a large role in why you look good at 191 pounds, plus black women in general are more curvasious and carry their weight better. (And I hope no one takes offense to that, but I feel it's true) After having my two kids, I gained a stomach, something I never had, I was 204 pounds, 5'6" and I had no stomach, just all ass, hips, thighs and chest, and I looked real good. Now after my kids, I am down to 185, but I have a stomach! I envy you! I wish I could lose this belly and love handles and go back to what I used to have. I figure the only thing that will work now is lipo and a tummy tuck! Which will suck!

I think the amount of body weight you can hold and be healthy depends alot on your body structure and height. one thing these article do not mention alot is that the dangerous fat the the ft around the abdonim and stomac meaning it is around your organs. So in other words not all big people are unhealthy and have health risks, some people are naturaly big. I myself am 5'10 210lbs and i do anhour of yoga every morning i am vegetarian and eat all organic and natural foods. I am pretty healthy if i say so myself.

fat people need to get a grip-- it is not normal to be fat- weight gain as one gets older sure but not fat(obese)... we need to reject the lane bryants stores and fat girl stores everywhere that proclaim big is beautiful- because its not. While neither is anerorexic, obesity also is a drain on our health care system(whole different topic) medicare, medicaid, social security, ect. Fat people have more health care issues..period. It is long past time to get obesity under control---quit telling people it's ok.

Being an underweight woman, I would have to say I actually try to gain weight in a healthy manner: both muscle tone and fat. However, the columnists are correct in their findings--many women who are too thin feel that they must maintain that impossible figure or be societally sanctioned. It is extremely unhealthy and puts an enormous amount of undue pressure on a person to try to always stay to a number...especially when those numbers aren't static, as this article mentioned. My advice for the twigglets out there who are trying to be the perfect woman (and do not have a medical condition preventing them from gaining weight): the "ideal figure" plastered all over the high fashion magazines is only an airbrushed girl who has whittled herself down to the size of a coat hanger. In my personal experience, men don't find coat hangers extremely sexy. In fact, there have been numerous studies that indicate high-fashion models are (on average) 80% more likely to resemble adolescent boys than grown women. That usually doesn't turn a man on, either--and is anatomically destructive toward even the most base functions, such as digesting and breathing. Maybe that's what fashion has come to, though...an attempt at irrational perfection?

On a lighter note, I was wondering if any of the readers had any healthy weight-gain suggestions, as my hypermetabolic system is keeping me at a gaunt 110 lbs. while I'm 5'9". Though I'm remarkably strong and healthy (for now--I'm also very young) this alarms me. And yes, this isn't exactly my choice to be a sunken-in toothpick. Any ideas? Thank you very much. : ]

Try yoga! Not aerobic forms like ashtanga, but slower practices with weight-bearing poses. It takes time to work up to 5 minute(or longer) poses, but when you practice this way, you don't burn a lot of calories(you burn some of course), but the wieght-bearing builds muscle mass AND (most importantly) bone density! After I began practicing hand balances and arm balances and practicing 5 minute plus poses, I gained 15 lbs. over a year and a half. My arms muscles are visibly defined and my back muscles are clearly stronger. I also practiced 10 minutes of abdominal exercises every day(in addition to using my abs in yoga postures), now my abs are clearly thicker(not my waist, just the muscles!) and much stronger. My waist is actually smaller as they pull in instead of falling out. Even with the extra weight, I wear the same clothes I've always worn, so I feel good about the weight and know that I am strong and healthy. By the way, I was not underweight or overweight to start with, but I was unhealthy. Now I can do anything I want easily! It feels great!

God gave us a body. But we are never happy and we want change. Even if not right. We try different diets, surgery, pills, clothes, and exercise.. We spend money, money and more money. On What Business and what other want us to be.,We should treat our body as Temple.Be happy with what the God gave us.

We are a nation of mindless eaters. I was 237 pounds a little over a year ago, and now weigh 137. I gave up all fast food, which includes Subway, stopped eating my beloved sweets (cookies, donuts, cake, muffins, etc), and reduced my portions of healthy food. I used to eat a lot of Lean Cuisines, one a day most of the time, and I gave them up also, and started cooking my own food. That I think also made a big difference. Sugar, white flour, corn syrup, and hydrogenated oil are evil, and yet they are in SO many foods. It really takes self-discipline to eat healthy, but after awhile we get those toxins out of our system, and the cravings are minimal. I sort of look at the food industry as drug pushers, only instead of of being addicted to cocaine or crystal meth, we are addicted to sugar, white flour, corn syrup, and hydrogenated oil.
