Seriously, ty1981--get your head out of your behind and learn something. Not all fat people are fat because they eat a lot. Some people have thyroid conditions, some people have genetic problems, and some people eat normally but have low metabolisms. It's not always because they sit on the couch and watch TV a lot. Just because you have a high metabolism, doesn't mean everyone else in the world does, so shut up and leave us be.

I'm sorry, but there are very few "medical" conditions that truly make a person overweight, and even someone who is hypothyroid can still lose weight if the motivation is there. Even worse, there are NO "genetics" that makes a person overweight against their will. It really just boils down to eating less than your body needs to perform it's day to day functions, and getting adequate exercise. Everyone's body is different, and we all overeat for different reasons. If we want to be healthy, we will seek the appropriate help and do it, otherwise we're mostly just making excuses.

Most people in this society are just plain old lazy and unmotivated.drowing themselves in self pitty. If we had a flag to represent us with other flags of people in this world we would win the heffer award. While People in countries like Darfur are wasting away.... Very sad. Maybe if the overweight people were faced with these images everyday they'd choose not to over indulge and send some of that food to countries with people who are starving to death. Meanwhile the people who are purposefully starving themselves should be shown classic nude/dressed images of beauty painted by world renound artists and see that never was there an image painted to depict people as beautiful with a skeletal body, And also maybe these peple would choose to put some clothes on. Not everyone is ment to be thin or ment to be obese... There are thyroid diseases and high metabolisms etc....Obese is a different story.... Food addiction is a copout like drug alcohol and all the other addictions.... Lame.. Grow up people.!!!

I actually DO NOT care about starving kids in Africa- I am not a fatso, but i'm not going to lose 10 pounds because starving in another country. Sorry, this isn't politically correct, but it's the truth.
People are fatter nowadays not only due to eating crap foods, but also the type of work we do today as \opposed to the early 1900's. Our modes of transportation, work, and leisure activities do not demand as much physical activity in the 21st century. Sorry that everyone doesn't constantly obsess over exercise and eat meals from measure cups and teaspoons!

I think most of the problem lies with general American Foods. Whats traditional food in Japan? Sushi.....Miso soup......rice. or England? meat and 3 vege. The traditional foods that have energed in America are high in fat and calories. Hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, Its no wonder American people get bigger.

get in the gym stop eating cheeseburgers stop teaching your kids to eat wrong and that being fat is ok when it isn't ok.And to the guy who says he can do anything with his 530lb wife ,one thing you are lying.

I have recently been losing weifght and I fel great about my body. The only thing I did was to eat in smaller portions and also to include excersie. Another thing I did was to gain some muscle and even though I don't excersie on a regular basis this seems to be helping out a great deal, because of this muscle tone I continue in my progress to loose weight and that to me is fantastic.

Addiction is why alot of people stay overweight. If you are addicted to anything, even television, cigarettes, working out, a drug, or whatever, you can understand why some people cannot overcome obesity. It is a disease, and it is very difficult when you pass by 10 fast food joints, have a potluck at work, or go to the grocery store and the majority of what is cheapest is the most unhealthiest. If people really want to see a change then there has to be mass awareness of how companies make money off of people who are addicted to sugar, carbs and bad food in general. I have lost over 50 pounds and have at least 30 or more pounds to go, and it has been the hardest thing in the world to do, I keep going back and forth, I just pray that I can get my mind off of sugar and on healthy foods and self control. I wish they had a pill that would stop my cravings!

    Hong Kong girl
I have struggled my whole life with weight issues. I am tired of seeing unrealistic pictures of women around. All women need to stand up together and say that we would like to see in magazines and posters. Living in a foreign country does not exclude me from the weight issues, it sometimes makes it worse. As I get older I am slowly learning to accept my body as it is. The new fashions make it hard to do that. I , like many other women need to learn what fits us and how to buy for our unique body shape. If we buy clothes that fit, then we can feel better about ourselves. This is not easy to do but not impossible. Knowing that there are other women who are going through the same thing give me the strength to carry on.

Everyone who says that it's because of a "medical condition" that someone is fat is missing the point of the article: Obesity has doubled in the last 20 or so years. The article does not say that health problems, such as thyroidism, have caused obesity. I, too, am part of the crowd that has gained weight and I am annoyed with myself.

Up until a year and a half ago, I weighed 120 pounds, which I have weighed since I graduated from high school in 1976, in spite of giving birth to 5 children. I'm not blaming fast food restaurants. I'm blaming my own laziness. Time to get back in shape!!!

    • Posted By: Sweety @ 12/08/2007 9:05:37 PM

I think you shouldn't be feeling depressed, after all you did have five children and no one in this world is going to blame you. I wouldn't the truth of the matter is that people are just not minding their own bussiness.

hmm... being fat is not really ok. there is a difference between being a size 14 because that is your normal size, or becuse you stuff your face with twinkies and cheetos and never get off your fat ass to exercise. its ok to have curves. its ok to not be stick thin, unless thats how you naturally are. if you excercise you will be happy with yourself. if you eat right you willl be happy with yourself. everyone's bodies are different and diverse. we shouldnt pressure everyone to be a size 0. you should strive to be healthy and fit, even if it still means you have a big size or a small size. be happy the way you are if youre in shape. but if you arent, just try to eat right and excersize. you dont have to do any crazy diets, you dont have to develop an eating disorder-just eat healthy balanced meals and work out. its ok to splurge a little bit, just try to be healthy. there are so many benefits to being healthy! you'll live longer, your chance for many diseases will drop, youll be happy with yourself. dont give up!!

SpeakFreely you must have never been fat before.... And yes, I am fat... so get over it... You are not seeing both sides of the story and don't want to understand. You are probably one of those people that whisper and point that you spoke about.. What people dont care to understand is that sometimes it is easy or hard for a fat person to lost weight. I agree with sassyone that you need to stop being the pointer and help the people that have the issues and WANT to help themselves... Accept it!

actually i was overweight in my freshman and sophomore year, but i ate in portions and lost weight. Also, all my friends (but 2) and my family is overweight. So i do know that side, but i did something as simple as eating the same foods i always do instead of eating 3x the portions like MANY americans nowadays do. And i wish my friends and family did to because its unhealthy and embarrassing at the same time because every one in my school is gorgeous and here are my friends weighing 200 lbs. plus and dont do anything about it when they're still in school!!!

    @cmm326:

    1. I think we all live in a real world; it's just the matter of how we shape our worlds.
    2. Fruits and vegetables (not the canned or frozen ones) can last 7-10 days. If you go shopping every other week perhaps you can have a week of fresh and a week or frozen fresh vegetables and fruits.
    3. It does not take 2 hours to prepare a healthy meal. On your worst day you can serve it in 20 minutes.
    4. You do not need to workout 5 times a week; 3 is fine. And even if you can???t make that, every activity can count. So next time do not fight the old lady for the parking spot closest to the entrance but park a little further away from the store, office, etc.
    5. To reach a obese point in your life???. yes you are right, people do not have to sit around eating all day. However, if you shape your life to the point that you need gastric bypass something went wrong. Unless it???s some kind of a medical condition, you probably overindulged on a regular basis and slowly changed your body.
    6. I can???t imagine what kind of healthy eating you family raised you on if all but you had a gastric bypass. You must have been lucky on of the bunch. Congrats!

What it all boils down to is, "Are you happy?" Who cares what magazines say or articles say, if you are happy with your life, that is all that matters. I'm sure there are some people that are at a healthy weight, do weight training and love to wear those tight jeans, but they can also be miserable to be around! It couldn't be more important: its what's on the inside that counts! If running and working out makes you happy, then do it. If eating makes you happy,. then do it! Me personally, knowing that my body is healthy from the inside out does it for me, but we are all different and that is what makes the human race wonderful.

I remember being in a group along time ago...remember when Oprah lost so much on the liquid diet the first time? Same thing. One young man had his BMI checked and it was right where it was suppossed to be. So he came to the conclusion that he never would be a slim man and quit the program. Yeah! It never worked for me, I started cheating right out of the gate!!!

people are just as critical of underweight people as they are of overweight people. I'm 5'3 and 95 lbs. most people would conciter that underweight. i however am perfectly healthy. I eat proplerly and maintain normal activity. I don't diet or not eat, i simply don't gain weight easily.I don't have a problem with it and i don't see why other's should either. Screw what people conciter the "norm". if your healthy and happy, that's all that should really matter.

Stop eating fast food. Put down your ho hos and cupcakes. Get your lazy fat ass off the sofa and do something. This country is a disgrace. Wejust keep indulging ourselves and gorging until everywhere you look you see fat ass people everywhere. It's sickening. As a perosn who just got back from overseas serving our great nation, when your fat ass is on the sofa watching T.V., turn on the world news and see some people with real problems. If that doesn't motivate you then go to your early grave....it's your own fault.

I'm a personal trainer. Here is my take:

People weren't created to sit. However, since the invention of desk jobs, the computer, the tv, vehicles, escalators, elevators, etc, we have essentially become more lazy. It used to take considerably more effort to do simple things such as wash clothes, visit a neighbor, do chores, we used to even find or hunting for food.

People used to criticize me for being too skinny. I've always been a size 3, I didn't understand why people would bother me about that, even accusing me of being anorexic. Size 3 is completely normal. Since becoming a personal trainer and learning that my body fat percentage is 21% and I'm in the normal range on the BMI, I've become aware of how crazy our perceptions of what is underweight, healthy, and overweight has become. Portion sizes are huge, technology makes us move less and less.

So to all those people who are making excuses right now, to that lady below who says it's not food or laziness that made her family obese....it's just not physically possible to become obese without consuming more calories than you burn, whether it's by eating too much or not moving enough. It's a simple equation of calories in vs. calories out.

Another misconception is that certain people just have a high metabolism. While metabolism can be a small factor, it's actually more a matter of muscle mass vs. fat on a person's body, and a pound of muscle burns 30-50 calories a day and a pound of fat burns 2-5.

    • Posted By: Unclenoodledong @ 12/08/2007 8:20:48 PM

Apparently brittney_leigh went to the 'only learn half of the truth' school of personal training.
Fact is, it's not just a simple equation of calories in vs. calories out. Studies and research have proven that if someone has too LITTLE calories, their body will store what they DO eat as fat. Exercise will certainly help get some of the fat off, but if your body thinks it is starving (which is what happens in the majority of fad diets or people trying to loose weight by cutting their caloric intake too severely) it will store everything as fat because it can live off the fat if you starve it again.

I have always been a size 5 but after 2 kids I got pretty heavy. I have tried to lose the weight but it has been a big challenge. For the first time in my life I had my doctor tell me I was too big for health concerns. I cried when I got home but I am makin some changes in my life style it is hard when you are being told to lose weight and soceity is just eating more all togither. The portions in restaurants have gotten alarmingly huge and it is scary.

  • Posted By: CorinneMQ @ 12/08/2007 7:27:36 PM

As mean as willietwo sounds, it's the truth. People shouldn't be obese to begin with, what the heck are they thinking.

    • Posted By: decymbergyrl @ 12/08/2007 8:18:17 PM

Obesity is never a choice...The people who suffer from obesity don't wake up one morning and say "hey i think I want to be criticized and treated badly today and for the rest of my life...." My sister happens to be obese however, she has spent her whole life this way. She is the size that she is because of a thyroid condition, as a child she was put on all types of restrictive diets that never really helped her lose any weight.
But, throughout it all she has been just as active if not more than most smaller people that I know. She works out on a regular basis and loves to dance. And she eats a balanced diet not alot of fried foods, desserts, carbonated beverages...In recent months she has lost about 60lbs. Technically, she is still considered obese. But, to the point many larger people are not large because that is how they want to be sometimes that is just how they are and no matter how hard they try without going all drastic and having expensive potentially deadly surgeries they learn to cope with what God has given them...We are not to judge them for their size because we don't know why they are that way.
