You know, I'm so sick of everyone thinking they're the victim in everything. "It's in my genes" or "It's genetics", such a lame excuse. Every female in my family except me is obese, some morbidly, and they all use that as their excuse too. Well thats all it is is just an excuse, an excuse to eat anything they want and not worry about getting the proper nutrition or exercise they need. I mean really, am I just the lucky one to not be super fat???? NO! I watch what I eat and I bust my ass at the gym. I'm in control of me! And so are all of you fat people. Noone is a victim of their life. You have so much control over so many things in your life. Stop taking the easy way out and blaming everything on someone or something else. Take responsibility for yourself and your actions.
I read a few comments about people saying "it's not what you look like on the outside that counts it's whats on the inside". Let me guess, those statements all came from fat people???? Thin, fit people don't say dumb stuff like that and this is why. One, noone ever said that just because your fat, you're a horrible, terrible, heartless person. Infact, some of the fattest people have the biggest hearts. Two, because it's just not true!!!! What you look like on the outside is a direct reflection of who you are on the inside!!!! That is true!!! You see a fat person and you know they're weak individuals, they don't have a good self esteem, they're not in control of themselves, and maybe they even have an addiction problem, which is again just a weekness. You see a thin, fit man or woman you know they're strong willed, have self control, and a self esteem. They don't make excuses. They're not victims! It's hard work but they say no to McDonalds every day and yes to the stairs.
Lets stop talking about appearance for a minute and focus on health. Not only is it terribly unhealthy to be over weight or obese just because of the fat you're carrying around, but think about how unhealthy the food is that your eating that makes you look that way. Fat, sodium, cholesterol, sugar, more fat.... This crap will kill you even if it doesn't make you fat! Everyone is in control of what they put into their mouths!
Stop being sissys! Get some will power, stop making excuses, take responsibility, and take control of your lives!

I am not overweight - but i don't want to be thin. I like curves to separate me from te men. YOU MAY NOT BE OVERWEIGHT BUT IT DOESNT CURE THE FACT YOU NEED PSYCHOLOGICAL HELP !!!!
TAKE A FEW DAYS FROM THE GYM AND GET YOUR UNDERLINE ISSUES FIXED!!!!
Having a high BMI does NOT necessarily mean you are obese. You could be a body builder with a lot of muscle!! Muscle WEIGHS more than fat...so if the BMI is based SOLELY on weight, that is NOT a good indicator of obesity! I wish EVERYONE would stop using this very dangerous and misleading indicator!

Boo-hoo. Most people in America are fat because they are lazy. They want to eat fast food, junk food and loads of unhealthy stuff and not excercise. For the lady with the thyroid problem, I am sorry for your struggle, but you are not the norm. The norm is the American fat ass that needs to get off the sofa and stop eating ho hos.
To ty1981: Gimme a break. Not all of us have the time or energy to go grocery shopping every 3-4 days for fresh foods, or to prepare a nice healthy meal every night, or to workout 5 times a week. Have you ever been overweight? Have you ever tried to lose a substantial amount of weight? Nope, didn't think so, because your comment is typical of judgemental people who don't have any firsthand knowledge or experience of what they are talking about. I personally have a healthy BMI, I've never been overweight even though I don't work out and I eat what my family raised me on. Speaking of eating what my family raised me on, I have watched my entire family, extended included, struggle with obesity, all to the point where every single member of my immediate family has had gastric bypass. And they were NOT lazy. So why don't you go back to your ivory tower and put on your skinny clothes and admire yourself in the mirror and think about how you're better than all of us poor townsfolk who will be, according to you, sitting on our butts in the village eating ho hos.
Commenting accordingly to your post:
1. I think we all live in a real world; it's just the matter of how we shape our worlds.
2. Fruits and vegetables (not the canned or frozen ones) can last 7-10 days. If you go shopping every other week perhaps you can have a week of fresh and a week or frozen fresh vegetables and fruits.
3. It does not take 2 hours to prepare a healthy meal. On your worst day you can serve it in 20 minutes.
4. You do not need to workout 5 times a week; 3 is fine. And even if you can???t make that, every activity can count. So next time do not fight the old lady for the parking spot closest to the entrance but park a little further away from the store, office, etc.
5. To reach a obese point in your life???. yes you are right, people do not have to sit around eating all day. However, if you shape your life to the point that you need gastric bypass something went wrong. Unless it???s some kind of a medical condition, you probably overindulged on a regular basis and slowly changed your body.
6. I can???t imagine what kind of healthy eating you family raised you on if all but you had a gastric bypass. You must have been lucky on of the bunch. Congrats!

Yeah, and I guess you're just the perfect american who has all the time in the world to work out and buy healthy groceries, and prepare healthy foods, right? Well, for alot of us here in the real world, we eat poorly because we don't have the time or energy to put into shopping every 3-4 days for fresh fruits and vegetables and cooking something nice and healthy for our meals and working out 5 times a week. Being fat is should NEVER be normal. People are just looking for EXCUSES for allowing themselves to get that fat. People shouldn't alter sizes and accept being obese, its not okay or healthy. If someone is obese they need to take a hard look at themselves and do something about that cus people will whisper and point. Plus, its just cutting several YEARS off their life. Being fat is never normal and never will be. Accept it.

could you please define normal ? Is it what you think or what I think i normal ?
Lumpychuckles: it is unfortunate that you stereotype people who are obese as a lacking self control. In some cases, this is accurate. However, in many cases lack of self control is not to blame for someon being obese. If you haven't learned from like that it truly is what is on the inside that counts, you are missing out on knowing a lot of great people. The crack addict... sure, he may be an evil or bad person - but he also may be a father, brother, or uncle who made some bad decisions and is still a good person on the inside, and just needs some help.
From your message it would appear that you think only slender or perfectly balanced BMI folks should have the opportunity to wear pleasing clothing or feel good about their appearance (hey fat people of the world, until you meet Lumpy's norm, you better hate yourself and be depressed). Would it, then, be your intention that until someone gets some 'self control' and looses weight, they should wear rags, or are you one of those folks that would just rather see anyone who isn't perfect put into a camp.... Seig Heil Lumpy
I have 3 Sisters. My sisters were always skin and bones growing up. I was not fat......I am big framed. My oldest sister is now 45 and weighs in at 350lbs. She was the worse growing up as far as the names and the cruelty. Karma got her in the end!She is getting gastric bypass surgery this January. She is now buying clothes for the new thin her. Her goal is to be a size 10 and she is telling me she is saving her fat clothes for me. The next sister is 43. She is addicted to diet pills and laxatives. She has overdosed on these pills and nearly died from
them yet she still pops them like crazy. She feels she is OK because she over exercises and
vomits excess foods. She maintains a size 4 this way. Her first husband divorced her because she gained 45lbs during her pregnancy and couldn't get it off fast enough for him. She is now so screwed up trying to stay thin so she can keep a man. Me.....I am 37 and I have listened to my older sister. I tried to keep up with her. At age 16 both of my older sisters were giving me speed(Black Beauties,Robin eggs) because I was so fat at the weight of 155. I have lost weight the right way 1 time in my life. It took me nearly a year to get from a 14 to a size 6. Everything was good until I got married. I got comfortable and started gaining weight rapidly. I have been with my husband for 17 years now. He tells me he loves me for me and if I got huge he would tell me.No....He wouldn't. I am big and he still loves me. I have 1 younger sister...age 35. She always looked sickly skinny. It was not her trying to be skinny. She could never gain weight. It was nothing for her to eat a large bag of potatoe chips a day on top of 3 meals. She never exercised. She just stayed very skinny. She was 5' 8' and weighed 95lbs. She had 2 kids and left the hospital with her pre-pregnancy clothes on. Her and I both had a total/radical hysterectomy within 6 months of each other. She has struggled with her weight ever since. She now is 180lbs and I think she looks wonderful. She cries over her weight gain and is starting to follow my older sisters and their sick weight loss regiments. A lot of things play into obesity. In my case I know what my problems are. I just need to get out of my rut and do the right thing. I am very protective over my 4 year olds weight. I never want her to be fat. I watch everything she eats and I guess I have worked on teaching her what she should eat since birth. I am the one hiding behind a locked door eating the bad stuff so she can't see what I am doing. I am ashamed. I want to change. I feel Obesity is as big of a disease as anorexia or belemia.
You lost my after "I have 3 sisters." I started looking for my fly swatter after that. Not sure how you're obese since your mouth can't be open to talk so much and take in food.
maybe it's because you can't read or comprehend a full sentence. oh yeah, we are posting your nonsense in facebook as the reason "why women prefer sperm donors" , maybe you would like to hold my long blond hair while i barf up your expensive dinner and then beat me afterwards for being 5 lbs overweight - you know, like "real men" like you do :) get a life
The only way the "body mass index" would make any sense is if we all had the same body frame, but we know for a fact that this is not the case. The person who came up with this way of finding the ideal body weight should have his head examined, since this is the most unscientific method I can think of. According to the BMI most athletes, except for long distance runners, fall into the overweight category, because they have better developed muscles; and muscles weigh more than fat. So if a well developed person with no visible fat on him steps on a scale, he might be told that he is fat and should exercise. The worst part of the whole BMI thing is that the medical community has bought into it, and that is dangerous. To determine whether a person is overweight is a bit more complicated than determining the BMI. So if you are health conscious, get the real tests done to find your ideal weight, and forget about the BMI, your body will thank you for it later.
To all those who fail to realilze how subjective this all this, or for those who have never experienced weight gain, stop condemning others for your feelings. Yes being obese is dangerous. I have always been a size 12 and NO it wasn't because I was overweight. And yes people do metabolize differently. If science had the all the answers, we wouldn't spend millions each year trying to attain a body image that society dictates.
And a comment on food, unfortunately, the socio-economic status of people in the lower classes, which is the majority, realize that going the fast food route is far cheaper than healthier choices. Just take a look and compare! Who is the real culprit!
Addictions come in all shapes and sizes and for those with an addiction to food, it's about modifying your behaviours, not eating for comfort, getting your highs from exercise and at least giving it an effort.
Those that condemn people for being overweight, EVER stopped to ask if they are at least trying????? Shame on your for thrawting a persons attempt to be healthy. Maybe they need help! And just trying lugging around all that weight when you exercise....I bet you can't! So get off your high horse and contribute to the solution, not make more problems!!! Last time I checked, we are human right? Show some compassion!
I was going to comment but after reading your comment - I could not have said it better !! Kudoz !!!!
Sassyone I was going to write a comment - but it could not have been said any better ! Kudos!!!!
I am a five foot six inch tall woman that weighs 220 lbs. If you ask me if I am obese I say 'yes', ask me if it bothers me, nope. I eat 'normal' meals, few snacks, and I work retail, so I'm on my feet moving around, lifting boxes, and so on all day. I've been heavier and I've been smaller, truthfully as long as I am comfortable in my own skin it does not matter in the least to me. I don't have energy to waste caring what other people think or what their perceptions are. I am what I am, love me, all of me, or not, it is, in the end, your loss for being narrow minded about it. For some people being on the larger end IS normal and IS genetic.
Only in America, where our diets are among the worst in the world, where grease is king and vegetables are for the faint of heart, is being morbidly obese considered acceptable. It's going back to the days when smoking was cool and a man wasn't a man unless he was a beer guzzling alcoholic. Don't dress up your lack of self control in designer fashion (Yes, I'm talking to you, Lane Bryant). Get off your "it's what's on the inside that counts" soapbox and realize that you are overweight. When was the last time you heard "Sure, he smokes crack, but it's what's on the inside that counts". Pass the salt please, and while you're at it, pass the guilt. Own up to your own short comings and don't make the rest of us feel like we're bad people when those "shortcomings" won't allow your pleasantly plump physique to squeeze into a seat in coach. We know, we know...the airlines discriminate...blah, blah, boo hoo hoo.
must be nice to live in your world of perfection....the blame indeed resides with those consuming this but take a step back, who the heck is profiting from this consumption? We made cigarette companies responsible ( to an extent ) why the heck not the big M?? They are the largest consumers and their actions need to be addressed! Stop playing the blame game and get off YOUR soapbox and make a change! Normal food should not be cheaper than a Happy Meal! I sure hope you don't take your kids there or you might be accused of contributing to your childs obesity!
If we all shared your attitude there would be men that couldn''t enjoy "playtime" or people without new hips and new knees...it's not my fault an old guy can't get it up anymore or that some athlete decided to overwork their body and require a hip replacement or some victim of lung cancer should suffer b/c they smoked! boohoo is a terrible attitude! show some compassion! maybe try to help insted of hinder! how do you know they aren't already trying!!!!
Wow. I can't believe how personal these comments get. I just had a final exam in my Human Nutrition course today and I highly recommend researching as much as you can from CREDIBLE sources regarding nutrition and the human body. Most humans find a comfortable way of living and just don't realize that there may be important changes that can greatly increase your future health and happiness, regardless of how much you already know about the subject. A registered dietician, who has at least a bachelor's degree in nutrition, can help if you have available money rather than time.
Yes America is experiencing an obesity 'epidemic'. We live in what they call a 'toxic' environment that encourages us to eat more and move less. Exercising is very important for reducing risks (and effects) of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, some cancers... To learn and make modifications now can save many of us from the many negative effects of overweight/obesity as we age. (Underweight also, but 'fat' seems to be the hot topic here) And when you research BMI, it is stated that it does not account for lean muscle, and it doesn't necessary mean you're 'healthy' as someone mentioned regarding Anorexia. But that doesn't mean it's not a helpful tool, in addition to waist circumference, logic, education...
I am 5'0" and weigh 130 lbs. I do strenght training with weights, exercise often and eat healthy. People see me as being small yet according to the BMI, I am overweight. I find that ridiculous! I wear size 8 jeans and Small/Xsmall shirts. I would like to keep my butt and bust, thank you very much. Good article, I will share this with my friends.
You know, some of the overweight people have certain illnesses, excluding diabetes and high blood pressure, that have medication that causes weight gain. Some people say fat is unsightly and not beautiful because they judge so easily on the weight, they do NOT care why they are struggling. It is also so easy for a skinny person to be very judgemental about weight because they have never struggled with it like some.
WOW, WHAT TIRADES in these blogs!!! Can we PLEASE move on to some SOLUTIONS???
Any formerly obese people out there who lost tons of weight, got healthy doing it, and have maintained their health and weight for longer than a year? Will you share what worked?
I'd especially like to hear from people who achieved that by doing something RADICALLY DIFFERENT...something that isn't being hyped and sold commercially to people desperate to lose weight. I don't know, something like drinking raw apple cider vinegar every day...any success stories like that out there? Anyone? (And by the way, is there a way to search this site for stories like this and eliminate all the blogs from whiners, holier-than-thouers, criticizers, and just plain nutty people???)
By the way, I don't have a weight problem myself...but I know people who do, and I would LOVE to pass on to them something that will work and not cost them a fortune in the process!
Here's to good health for all!!!!
I lost almost 200 pounds in just under 3 years. I am also now a registered dietician. Here are a few tips.
*Quit the juice, caffeine and carbonated beverages. Not only is that excess unnecessary sugar intake, carbonation has been proven to stretch the stomach. Also, it is possible to gain a pound a week just from liquid calories.
*Avoid fast food. We all know greasy food is bad for us. Did you know that a kid's meal is the proper serving size for a grown adult? Not to mention the trans fat from the lard it is cooked in.
*Eat every 3 hours. 3 meals and 3 snacks. Limit caloric intake to 10-13 times your ideal weight. For example, if you want to weigh 150lbs, intake should be between 1500 and 1950.
*Watch sodium intake. Try to keep sodium to 1200-1500mg per day. Sodium retains water!!!
*Be sure to take in 50-60g of protein a day. Protein helps build lean muscle. Lean muscle is what burns fat.
*Curb carbs. Do not exclude carbs from your life but reduce carb intake to 180-220g a day.
*Don't fall victim to fad diets. Weight loss is about lifestyle change not yo-yo dieting.
*Follow a balanced plan: 6 fats, 3 dairy, 200 carbs, 55 protein, 6 vegetable and fruit.
*Buy a food scale. Trust me it won't take long before you can tell how much something weighs just by looking at it.
*Start exercising a little at a time. Begin with 10 minutes a day of walking in place. Try that for a month or so. The next month add 10 minutes. In the third month you can easily be up to 30 minutes a day of cardio and 15 minutes of strength training. Use free weights to strengthen arms.
*Get a buddy. It is always better to have a partner in crime. Not only for moral support, but as a checks and balances system.
*Create a reward system. Set goals and when you reach those goals, reward yourself. Lose 10lbs in 2 months and get that new DVD or CD you want. When you lose 25 in 4 months get a new pair of jeans. 50 in 8 months is a new outfit. 100lbs in 18 months, honey get that new wardrobe because YOU EARNED IT!!!
My friend has a myspace blog dedicated to her journey, She has also lost a considerable amount of weight through diet and exercise. She is still losing so it may be worth it to find a friend, or even an online support group. Her site is www.myspace.com/onelife_onebody

Doctors can and do recommend 300 calorie a day diets with strict supervision (hospital stay) and vitamins. Look it up... it's not just for people who are forced to eat that little because of a stomach staple either. They can actually die if the eat more than 300 calories because there isn't the room.
It is very easy to sit back and judge others. You have no idea what or why they are the way they are. You use Hollywood as a guidelne but they are also married one day and divorced the next. They encourage sleeping around, drinking and drugs. They "adopt" children for publicity not love. They expose their thin bodies on tv and movie screens and promote other lifestyles that encourage pregnancy, aids and other harmful things to those that follow their examples. Aids is more of health risk than obesity and we are wanted to pay for this through our tax dollars not only in the US but other countries as well. Why not up those premiums for aids, alcohol and other sex related diseases. Why? Because this is their lifestyle and they think it is ok. So, no one wants to go against that. Aids is also being spread to the elderly and young innocent children due to various ways, tainted blood etc. Helping others is a good thing including aids research, cancer research but not at the expense of crucifying others. Not everyone has the funds and time to go to a gym. It is getting increasingly dangerous for women to jog or walk outside without getting attacked. Children aren't safe to play outside anymore without constantly being watched and people are having to work longer hours and sometimes more than one job. The article says fat friends encourage others to be fat. NOT true. My aunt was a nurse and adopted a child. My aunt was heavy but her daughter never was. She ate fast food and didn't excercise alot but she was still thin. I have friends that don't gain weight due to my size. I am however treated with disrespect many times in public because I am overweight. People will come to me and ask for money or help but when I need help (like a flat tire) no one helps. I've tried to lose weight since I was a kid and was very active. I have tried all my adult life. I have a thyroid problem but even with taking the medicine I still gain weight. People that don't have a problem with it don't understand how hard it is. They are the 1st to criticize. It is a struggle and the drug companies enjoy the money they make. Ridicule from doctors only makes you not want to go see them. I did a 300 a calorie a day diet for a year at my doctors recommendation and gained weight. People need to be little more understanding. We don't enjoy the weight, the clothes you have to wear because the nice ones are always in another size but the struggle is frustrating.
I highly doubt a professional with a medical degree recommended a 300 calorie a day diet for the span of a year. Not only is that unimaginable, it could have killed you. A female body needs 1400 calories a day to survive and the male 1800. If your doctor did recommend that his or her license needs to be revoked for provoking possible injury or death to a patient.
