Ok honestly, I'm sixteen years old. I'm 5'1" and I weight 158lbs. I don't think that's normal, I feel fat, but it's doesn't bother me. What does bother me is listening to people say "oh Im fat I need to lose weight" when they are 100 lbs. Not all people who are above 200 pounds sit on their butt and eat french fries, and tons of boxes of debbie cakes every single day. Some people just eat what they want, and cant get it off like people with a fast motabolism. So I really dont see the point in trying to sterotype people that are over weight. Not every person does the same thing that everyone else does. Our society isn't accepting being fat because we like being fat. People are accepting it because if that's how people want to be, then let them be that way.

BMI is the stupidest way of telling if someone is healthy or not. I'm not going to let any number tell me if I am healthy. What if there is a girl she weighs 125 and is 5'2" her BMI would be about 23 she is a healthy weight. What if that same girl eats 6000 calories a day the throws everything up because she thinks she has to keep her weight low because in our society fat=bad and thin=good. That is what we are telling a whole generation of children here people. SO WAKE UP!! And I love you too MissWhezzie!!!

I'm 5'7" and i weigh 196, but somehow I was a homecoming candidate, and I get on stage every night and I'm told how freakin' gorgeous i am, speak for yourself not for us "fat girls", we have to much going on to listen to your biggotted ***.

People were created to move, not to sit. Since the invention of computers, desk job, vehicles, tv's, etc, we sit much more. It used to take much more effort to wash clothes, do daily chores, we even used to spend much of our effort on finding or hunting food. That's what we are made for. I'm a personal trainer...it's the simple equation of calories in vs. calories out.

I think our perception now has changed so much that everyone is worried when people seem "skinny", however, our perception of someone now who may seem underweight is probably actually the ideal weight. There are the same if not more problems with those who are overweight, but we are so used to seeing everyone overweight we only freak out about the thin ones. --just thought I'd point that out

sixtieschick61- i agree with you, what a lot of people don't completely understand is that obesity is not always a physical problem, it is very much an emotional one. a lot of people eat as an escape to their problems...bad home life, bullies at school, anxiety etc. People put so much emphasis on being thin and beautiful, in turn making people obsessed with it, like my self, i suffer with emotional eating and bulimia. I still attend high school, i look at the overweight teens that i know, and all of them have had bad home lives or have been bullied at school. i attend a small high school but i don't think that it is a coincidence. It's like this everywhere, so my point is that maybe obesity can't always be fixed with a nutritionist and a gym. Maybe researchers and doctors need to focus more on the psychological side of it. and discover that maybe the issue is a lot deeper than people think it is.

Bull crap. Either you're too thin and have "mental problems" or you're too fat and have "thyroid problems". Switch size tags around all you like, ladies...there's no excuse for being fat, lazy and undisciplined. Face reality.

  • Posted By: krissydella23 @ 12/08/2007 6:37:26 PM

I just want to say GO MISSWHEZZIE!! BMI is the stupidest thing ever created because let's say a girl who is 5 foot 2 in and weighs 125 is told she is healthy because her BMI is 23. Little does everyone know but she is eating 6000 calories a day and throwing up everything...but all that matters is your height and weight right??

  • Posted By: hitman411 @ 12/08/2007 4:58:33 AM

Fat people are not normal. Stop eating. This fat epedemic is a result of hormone foods sponsored by the new FDA in the early 80's . Hence there are no more natural skinny people in America. Yet you can go to any third world country and find people of the same build on how we looked 25 years ago. America is now a joke when it comes to fat. There are fast food resturants every 30 feet. How can you not be fat? Any extra time on your hands just munch or eat something great. Take your fat ass for a walk and leave the car keys home.

    • Posted By: V4Violeta @ 12/08/2007 5:07:28 AM

Man.. What is it with all the close minded people on this page?
I will ask you the same question I asked Ivory coast.
What is normal? You seem to be able to classify people as not normal, so you must know what IS normal. So please, enlighten me.
Oh and after you give me an answer, you might want to think about who is making America look like a joke, the "fat" people, or arrogant, close minded, "Normal" people like you?

      • Posted By: ashley4400 @ 12/08/2007 6:36:38 PM

we are not close minded people. simply people that haven't lost perspective. fat shouldn't be the new norm. overweight people shouldn't be saying they're healthy. ppl in third world countries are of normal size because they live like humans are supposed to live. they walk wherever they have to go and they eat whole wheat and veggies and healthy stuff. no damn wonder they're healthy. i've never seen a picture of a fat person in 1920's america. tjhink about it. even if sooomeone was a little on the chubby side, they were still not obese. these days, more fat people are every where and they should be ''accepted''.....they definitely should not. if you listen your body and give it what it needs instead of what you want.....you'll be healthy. its not rocket science at all. its actually very simple and the fact that people want to create excuses and complicate things is truly scary.

It's amazing how genetics has changed in America- aparently the overweight gene has increased by 15% in the last couple of decades. I'm no expert at evolution, but that seems fishy to me.

    • Posted By: corrijean @ 12/08/2007 6:28:03 PM

Obviously you don't understand evolution. The prevalence of the obesity gene hasn't increased. It has been favored throughout human evolution. In the past, since food was scarce, it was an evolutionary advantage to be able to store more weight. The current increase of obesity is not caused by an increase in the obesity gene, but by ample food supplies.

I have been reading the posts and I have to say, seems like the ones that are not overweight, have ???solutions??? as to what overweight people should and should not do. One comment that really hit home for me was the comment from HeinrichHimmler and I quote, ???Sterilize all fat people so that their seed is eliminated from the earth. I want a society of thin, beautiful people!??? I can???t have kids, and that has nothing to do with my weight.. You know it is people like u that makes it hard for overweight people, with your stares, giggling, and making noises when we walk by, your are suppose to be grown, but it???s more like u are immature. I am myself is an obese African American woman, 5???3 tipping the scales at 308. One look at me and u would think, all she does is sit on her *** in front of the TV and eat all day. But with someone saying that, they don???t know anything about me and about all the medical problems that I have and that there statement is partly true, I do sit on my ass, but that is because I am in a wheelchair. Anyone on here that takes a high dose of prednisone knows what I am talking about when I say that prednisone helps but the weight on, especially if u have been taking it for years like I have. I do want to lose weight and I have working toward that, but I???m not doing it for the morons that think I should, to fit their standard of beauty; I???m doing it for me. Even thought I am obese, I Love me, ALL 308 pounds of me.

Speaking from the male point of view, many women are overly critical of their bodies. Just relax you're all beautiful!!

thank you bop1104. You're right. Too many women obsess over their weight instead of accepting what they think are imperfections. It's what makes you an individual, nobody's perfect.

I have only a few tidbits of advice for folks, obese or not. It's not THE way, but it is a way.

    A) Seriously, stop eating meat. You'll soon realize that it is an addiction, just like coffee or cigarettes . . . and your body will literally go through withdrawl after a week. But go 3-4 weeks and you'll discover a HUGE boost in energy. A healthy, well-balanced diet based on vegetables, fruits and (non white-starch) grains is far easier to achieve once you break yourself of the "need" to have beef, chicken, etc.

    B) Drink water. Lots of water (and please just drink/filter the stuff out of the tap -- paying for bottled water is just ridiculous) If you're an athlete or very active, drink a glass of REAL apple juice (just 1 glass) -- it's nature's sports drink. Nix the cow milk in favor soy but just 1 glass! Everything else is useless.

    C) Don't believe the garbage people spout about "needing protein" and certain kinds of fat. The World Health Organization says a heathly HUMAN needs around 30 grams of protein a day. But the FDA says a healthy AMERICAN needs 60-70 grams.... do you see the disconnect here? There is a reason for it.

    D) Alcohol is the most damaging thing you could ever, ever, ever put into your body. Cut way back or nix it and you will see postive change, physically and mentally.

    E) Strength training is helpful but the true is that it can do a great deal of damage to your bones, ligaments and joints overtime, making you prone to injuries (and getting injuried later in life is NOT something you recover from easily). The guys bragging about how muscular they are likely can't touch their toes and are prone to injury . . . Aim not for bulky muscles but lean, real muscle ... non-weght-lifting exercises like biking, running and YOGA are outstanding for women (and men too!).

Your body is the temple for your soul and a testiment to your devotion to that higher truth. It is telling you something ... it knows exactly what it needs, not what your mind says it "wants." Let go of your mental blocks and the whole issue of weight dissolves. You can "it's not that simple" but that's just your mind. It IS that simple.

    I wish you all luck.

tofu is wonderful in soup also and is a GREAT alternative to meat. (i still eat meat but not often)
bottled water is however nesssary for peole with wells, (you know what im talking about you well peple!) if ouve never tasted well water, your lucky its like blood, well.. not totally, i mean blood is thicker.. but anyways, its metalic tasteing, and not that good. i buy bottled water every week .. but im not ragging on yoru comments at all, i was just commenting i think your comments are great.

      • Posted By: clementine @ 12/08/2007 6:21:33 PM

Bottled water is not necessary for people with wells. I have a well, and it is the best water!

    • Posted By: Onelife_Onebody @ 12/05/2007 3:44:12 PM

Okay, in response to your rant: A) Vegetarians die 15 years earlier than people who eat lean proteins. Absolutely cut out red meat but not lean chickens and porks. B) Yes, water should be a person's primary fluid source but too much ater can cause water poisoning. C) If you are trying to tone or build lean muscle then you NEED extra protein every day. A workout will lose half its effect if 20g of protein is not consumed within 30 minutes of working out. D) The average person can gain 20lbs a year just from liquid caloric intake. Absolutely get rid of alcohol and juice. E) Strength training is a fantastic way to lose weight and convert fat to muscle. People who hurt themselves strength training have poor technique or are using weights too large for them.
In addition to all that, reduce you sodium intake to less than 1200mg per day. Increase physical activity to 30 minutes 5 days a week. The ultimate goal is 60 minutes 5 days a week, but for those who are just becoming active, take it slow. You can seriously hurt yourself if you over exert yourself too quickly. Find a buddy to workout with, make it a team effort. But for anyone trying to lose weight, get a support system in place. Talk to a nutritionist and an exercise therapist. Be positive and take every day one meal at a time.

      • Posted By: waderaide @ 12/05/2007 6:03:45 PM

Well, I wasn't ranting ... or I didn't mean to come off that way.

You're right -- there are tons of ways for vegetarians to screw up their diets and Americans haven't fully grasped HOW to be vegetarian yet. But I think if you look at true vegetarians, namely those who practice vegetarianism as a way of life, not a diet (India, East Asia, etc.), you'll see their length and quality of life is often far superior to their counter parts.

As for the 20g of protein following a workout, I'm not sure where that comes from or whether it's true or not. I know in my case and the people I know, some well-deserved water and a glass of apple juice following a cardio workout and possibly a light meal is all that's needed. I've never broke out the scale to determine how much is protein though.

        Thanks for your input.

        • Posted By: Onelife_Onebody @ 12/08/2007 10:02:32 AM

Hey, sorry if I came off as a witch. I am just disgusted with people posting misinformation. Your info was fairly accurate but others are pretty much telling obese people to have a heart attack from beginning an intense exercise regimen. It's crazy how the smallest changes can make the biggest differences. The 20g of protein after working out comes from the fact that when you are exercising, you are using your muscles to burn fat, which is taxing on the muscles. It goes to the philosophy of feeding a fire log by log instead of tossing 3 logs on and putting the fire out. The protein keeps the muscles working even after exercising ceases.

      • Posted By: mommyof2girls @ 12/05/2007 3:37:34 PM

no, it's moderation with everything. why deprive yourself of food that you enjoy when you will just break down and go overboard?? you know, not all plus size women are unhealthy. i read a study that suggests to not just look at the bmi of a person. a person may have a high bmi, but if you look at health and muscle vs fat they are not fat. some women are built large and cannot ever fit into a size 5 or whatever. you cannot change someone's bone structure to makae them tiny...but i am sure that hollywood will try that sometime.

  • Posted By: InControl @ 12/08/2007 6:18:39 PM

To: Sixtieschick61- First let me say that I'm sorry I offended you. I did not set out today to hurt anyones feelings. I have lots to comment on so please listen with an open mind. You took fragments of what I said, but neglected to see the whole picture.

First of all, I said that just because you're fat doesn't make you a horrible, terrible, heartless person. I don't descriminate against large people. Like I said, my entire family is huge, my very best friend is morbidly obese, and I myself have struggled with my weight since I can remember. I'm sorry that you took everything so personally.

What I wrote was directed to the general population of people. It really is true that people look for excuses. People need someone or something else to blame their problems on. It's not just the fat people, it's everyone. People "in general" don't take responsibility for their actions and the consequences that follow. Everyone has an excuse for everything. Instead of just saying "It's my fault, but I have the power and the knowledge to fix it now", it's easier to say "well it's in my genes I'm doomed to be fat or I'm doomed to be an alcoholic".

My problem is not with each fat person individually, it's with everyone making excuses for everything. I don't think I know it all, but I do know what an excuse is and I know that we as individuals have a ton of control over so many things in our lives that people just forget about because they're too busy being the victim.

Again, I appoligize for so greatly offending you, and I really did not mean to hurt you or anyone elses feelings.

I think that this is just rediculous! I wear a size 0 and hearing that a person who used to wear a size 8 can now wear a size 2 makes me feel fat. Tricking the mind into thinking a person is still the same size is bad for your health mentaly and physically. I do think thoe that people are much more heavier these days and I think its rediculous because all of the I love my fat just makes me sick. You hear people who are over weight saying I love my curves. Ugh.

    • Posted By: ashley4400 @ 12/08/2007 6:14:07 PM

i totally agree with you, Stephipoo57. well said. its completely unhealthy to tell yourself you're okay when you are in fact over weight. i recently lost 10 pounds and i'm working on another 10 to fit into a size 4. i'm 5' 7'' so i think that would be good. but it sickens me when i'm trying hard to look good and be fit and someone fat says "well you don't have curves, i love my curves" newsflash: if you have 2 butts......and you have literally more curves.....ur obviously not more attractive. curves are awesome and i'm all for them, just in the RIGHT PLACES.........ur belly having 3 curves is NOT attractive by any means. for the most part, staying fit and healthy isn't a party, its pretty hard work. the majority of overweight people don't seriously have a health problem keeping them from losing weight do they? they just can't stop eating. so i say get on a fitness plan and take it seriously. i feel that its essential to take responsibility for your health, whether its good or bad. the phrase ''you are what you eat'' goes an extremely long way.

    • Posted By: jamiechristen @ 12/07/2007 4:12:54 PM

Well I think that anyone that eats right and exercises should be happy what ever size they are. Although I believe that size 0 is a bit too small to be excited to be in. Think about it what is 0, nothing. Size 8 and above has all thoses curves that the men love!!

  • Posted By: meistermama @ 12/08/2007 6:11:12 PM

When I weighed what the BMI said I should weigh I was sick all the time. I weigh 20 pounds over and I never get sick. I work out 4 times a week, weights and cardio, have good blood pressure, good cholesterol and no heart disease. My bi-polar meds make me gain weight but if I work hard and eat right I can maintain but never lose. If I got off the meds I could lose but I'd rather stay out of the mental ward. Which would you choose?

To the person who is saying most fat people are lazy. I worked for the Post Office for over 24 years. I had a 6 mile walking route which I did 5 and sometimes 6 days a week. I am overweight according to the doctor's charts. I can dead lift up to 75 pounds, and I have 7 major problems on the L-3, 4, and 5 in my back. What you wrote makes me feel you are judging books by their covers. So not all FAT as you wrote people are lazy or are sitting on their butts eating ho ho's.
