One week ago I walked into a Spectrum Athletic Club in Goleta California to obtain a new membership. I am overweight. The male receptionist stated that he could help me but then he looked at me, made a strange face, and said, "She'll help you". The girl behind the counter rolled her eyes and said, "Thanks a lot". Neither one wanted to help the old fat lady. While the girl was walking to the front of the counter, both the male and female stopped to whisper about me. (While I watched)
A big FYI for skinny people: This kind of negative response form fitness personal is common. It makes it diffuclt to go to the gym when you know this is what you will face each and every time you go to the gym. Skinny people get a positve response while fat people get made fun of.

I've read some of the comments and the skinny people who make fun of fat people do not understand that they may be part of the problem. Or perhaps they do and they like the power they have in harming someone else.

I feel for you. This kind of behavior is what is mainly wrong with this world. How sad for these two young people that they are so self involved that they can not see the opportunity right in front of them to help another human spirit on his or her path. I personally would have gone to the manager and filed a complaint in a respectable manner. He or she should know what kind of employees are representing their business. Good Luck to you on your adventure.

I think those two are missing the whole point - they have a gym. The whole point of a gym is for overweight people (or even regular weight people) to get into shape. They should have been bending over backwards to help you, not criticizing you. I agree, file a complaint. Those two should be fired.

So many factors are involved , staying seperated is paramount to seeking insight and wisdom. Taking personal responsibiltiy for ones health and appearance is just that. Furthermore being non-judgemental of how others look is just as important. If a person really wishes to loose weight then getting in touch with emotions, and triggers are imperative.

Being overweight because of hypo -thyroid and or combined with Diabetes is the extreme challenge.

Emotional issues must be addressed by identifying the root.

Lack of motivation must be addressed by taking responsibility for yoursefl and stop the denial.

It is all about self love and the choices we make .

I am very overweight. Weight has been a problem for me since I hit puberty a "gazillion" years ago. I have been on every diet known to man. I realize that it's not a "diet", but a life-style change that is needed. There is definitely truth to the fact that some of us will constantly fight the bulge, and some of us won't. People like me have a tendency to "give up" or "set aside" the project of losing weight because we just want to live like what we consider to be a normal life, i.e. eating like a helathy human being. A "fat" person can't eat like the guy next door because they will just mantain their weight and not lose anything. It upsets me that I have to eat so much differently then what I consider to be "normal" to get to a healthy weight. I am not a fast-food junkie, I don't keep sweets in the house, I don't cook "junk". There needs to be a better understanding of why many of us are as big as we are. I see the ads for Jenny Craig, and others, and would really like to try them, but I can't afford them.....they are so expensive. It would be perfect for me because there would be no cooking, no measuring......basically not much thinking.....just eat it. If I was supporting just me, I could pay for it. I would love to see these programs made more affordable. I think it's wonderful that Kristy lost all that weight with Jenny Craig. She was able to afford it, and I can't.

I'm under the impression that youre intimidated by what seems like and endless journey. If you eat like a healthy person, you'll eventually be one. just a short walk every day, or even every other day will help. With very little effort you could certainly lose 2 lbs a month. That sure doesn't seem like much right now, but think how good it would feel to weight 24lbs less in a year, or nearly 50 lbs 2 years from now. With a little more effort, you could lose significantly more than that.

BMI doesn't take in consideration muscle mass (which weighs more than fat). those people who eat whole foods, exercise for 20 minutes to a half hour a day could in fact still be healthy. fat is not the "new normal", designers and clothing manufacturers need to sell to survive, they have found a way of manipulating the public. a number on a pair of pants is nothing compared to the health of your body and mind as well as the well being on a family, a man or woman of any size trying to make an effort to live a healthy lifestyle has my support and congratulations...

So I used to be overweight. Was 5'4 and weight 180 pounds. Told myself that I was just curvy. That I wasn't a teenager anymore, so I couldn't expect to fit into those sizes again. But really....that was a whole bunch of bull. I now weigh in the low 130s, wear a size 6/8 and feel AMAZING! I feel amazing not only because I look pretty dang sexy these days and feel more confident, but because I started running too. It started out as a way to lose weight, but it has turned into a passion. I feel so strong when I'm running. I never knew I could feel this good. And it's because I finally sucked it up, admitted I was overweight (not just curvy) and started making healthier food choices and started exercising.

Try out www.sparkpeople.com. Seriously.....it's the most amazing health website. So many comments here are so negative but the community at that website (it's free by the way) is always so positive and supportive, no matter if you're overweight, a healthy weight, or underweight.

Well, happyhappyjoy, there are those of us who are physcially not able excercise like we should. I've had a stroke that has caused permanent nerve damage in my right leg and arm. I also now have arthritis in my lower back, so even standing is painful. I am not physcially able to do crunches, leg lefts, squats, etc. The only thing i can do is walk. It keeps my weight down but not ideally. I haven't eaten in Mickey D's or BK in year. I eat whole grain, low fat and very little red meat. So, YOU SANTIMONIOUS SLUT, not everyone can my perfect like you

I think that was a bit unnecessary, no? I am sure there are things you yourself stink at (most notably being sympathetic and understanding) - however, it's not shocking you would cut others low to compensate for your short comings. . .

I am about 35 lbs. overweight. I know how to lose it - diet and exercise. If I choose not to diet or exercise, it's my fault and no one elses. And, no other excuses.

Being overweight is not the only cause of type 2 diabetes, heirety play's a major role in this disease. Doctors have said that a person must first be pre-disposed to this disease in order to get it. Doctors say that overweight can be a factor in the onset of type 2 diabetes and losing weight can prevent the onset of it but it is not the only factor. In fact Doctors say that the person can gain a boat load of weight and still never get the desease if they are not pre- disposed to it. I have two friends who are thin and they both have type 2 diabetes, in fact they are mother and daughter go figure. I also have a two family members who are thin and have type 2 diabetes they are brothers. I also have overweight friends who do not have the desease again go figure. I think that because of the media hype some people are picking on overweight people and blaming them for the health care problems, people need to ask themselves what about Aid's, this is also a preventable disease which uses much of our health care dollars but most of us are conpassionate enough not to insult people with aid just because they have a health problem. The health insurance industry seem's to want someone to blame for their greed so why not people with a weight problem? Not long ago it was people with aids. We need to work together to solve this health care problem not just play the blame gave.
We need to help find a cure for cancer, which is taking out as many people as obesity . We need to find a cure for aid which is killing thousands of people all over the world. We are all in thie crisis together you can be healthy today a sick tomorrow from all types of unknown ailments. So instead of playing the blame gave and insulting people for things that plage them let's start to work together for better health care for all.
Remember Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent but in the end all mankind fell. Genesis 3:1-24

I suggest that you take a nap, rest your "little head" and try again tomorrow..... tomorrow....

Everyone tries to make weight loss so difficult. Don't eat garbage food and eat until your satisfied, not full. Exersise a little, then a little more. The smallest effort can easily result in 2lbs a month of weight loss. Yes, that's not much, but with VERY little effort, that's 24 lbs a year. And with some good effort, it could be 2 lbs a week.

I am in complete agreement with 99torches. Americans are FAT AND LAZY because they eat too much and don't exercise. PERIOD!!!!

  • Posted By: angelic1 @ 12/08/2007 12:20:57 PM

I agree with the comment previously posted by alive and well. One's health habits and the lifestyle they choose to maintain health (or lack thereof) are each person's prerogative and a choice made exclusively by that individual. Each person will either reap the benefits or suffer the consequenses of the choices that they have made. No judgement should be made by another person. The body and health will directly reflect positive or negative lifestyle choices and cannot accept excuses of any kind. Each person will live (or die) according to these choices.

Very well said Rich99. You think you're fat and sexy? Dream on. Maybe you have a pretty face. good for you. Fat= unhealthy. There's nothing sexy about that.

I am the super plus size gal....but I'm in love living my life to the fullest...I think your weight is what you make of it..If you are one that doesnt want to loose the "good ol fashioned" way then shut up about it....pills dont work surgery may..but who can afford that? If you are that unhappy enough to talk and whine about it get your big *** of the couch and go for a walk!!!

  • Posted By: 99torches @ 12/08/2007 12:20:09 PM

spoken like a true fat ass. oh, and the comment about running 5 km a day, barely touching carbs and still weighing 235? that is SUCH a lie! nobody who weighs 235 could run 5 km a day, and anyone who does run 5 km a day will very quickly become VERY thin. i'm a runner; i run 4 miles a day during the week and 5 miles on saturday and sunday, and i also bike 5 days a week and do pilates. i'm 5'11", 150 pounds. if you excercise MORE and eat LESS than me (becaus i DO treat myself to the supposedly BAD foods you DON'T eat, like chips, fries, cake, etc - its about moderation) how could you weigh more? this excuse about people "just being fat" or blaming weight or metabolism, genetics, thyroid, etc., its just an excuse. america is a lazy, fat-ass country. during the holidays, a trolley takes fat-ass mall shoppers from the parking lot to the mall doors. and the people who make use of this "service" are always the ones who would greatly benefit from the excercise. how can americans be so into sports and still be SO unathletic? one of the great myseries. be honest with yourself, lady - don't lie to us in hopes that we'll pity your allegedly mysterious obesity. you're fat because you eat too much and excercise too little - PERIOD.

This year I worked as a consultant in more than 30 states, and one thing is apparrant -- Americans are fat. It's sad that many of the "politically correct" comments posted suggest we'd be better off ignoring the problem than addressing the epidemic. I say "let them eat cake." To the rest us, let's go for a walk.
