    Picture this---

An eight year old boy scheduled for an emergency appendectomy.
He is 5 feet tall. He is pleasant but in distress. Eyes are tearful. Parents are hovering.
    He weighs 160 pounds.

How did an eight year old boy gain that much weight? He dosen't have polycyctic ovaries, he is not hypothyroid, He does not drive a car to McDonalds.

However, his parents are huge. The father weighs over 400 pounds and his mother is a spherical 350 pounds. In this family, being really big is normal.

After successful removal of his appendix, the young lad got a wound infection, required additional surgery and spent two weeks in the hospital. His hospital bill exceeded $ 250,000.

    Now that's a health problem.

when i was 16, b/c of a thyroid disorder, my weight plummetted. i looked anorexic in my eyes. the doctor told me that i was still not at my "ideal" weight. i told him to shove it. now i'm 27, 274lbs, and feel very fulfilled with life. i've actually lost 23lbs since april. i find that if i don't look at it as dieting, then i'm more likely to lose it. i do portion control more than anything. i absolutely do not exercise though which is something i should change. i set small goals too. my resolution for 2007 was not to lost 100lbs...instead i opted for 20 which i've succeeded in doing.

First I'd like to point out that I think the BMI scale is crap. It takes into account only how heavy you are, not your mucsle mass (which weighs more that fat). My fiance is 200 lbs, but he is a semi body builder and I'd be shocked if he had more than 10% body fat, however the BMI says he is "obese". Another point of women being comfortable with themselves, I'll use myself as an example. I am 280, but I have never in my life been made to feel I was ugly or not ok. Which more or less makes me happy with my life. My fiance loves my curves, my hips, my chest. I work out 5 days a week, elypitical, treadmill, swim laps and lift weights. I eat a fairly healthy diet. Why does being skinny mean being healthy? I am perfectly healthy, have no diseases, no asthma and can cilmb whole flights of stairs. I'm beautiful and have no desire to change. Women, take pride in yourselves and take care of your bodies, no matter how much you weight.

cupcake, you need to learn how to spell. It's spelled "lose" weight, not "loose"

We as a society should be gauging our physical fitness level not our pant size. Having young daughter I don't want them obsessing about their weight resulting in a eating disorder but I also dont want them to think it is okay to be fat. Being over wieght is a HEALTH issue not a vanity issue. We need to looking at how many miles a person can run not what size they are. Life is about balance and health. Our children are at great risk if we as parents do not do something to stop this skinny/fat obsession and teach them to be happy and healthy from birth on.

I have been overweight on and off most of my adult life and agree that the only thing that will keep it under control is diet and excercise. Now the good news. I am 54 years old and the one great thing about getting into your 50's is you really don't give a damn any longer about what strangers think of you. Why, you're not important to me and I'm not interested in impressing you. Why should or would I care what you think?

This article is informing those who read it of the risks of being overweight or obese. I see nothing in the article that judges or criticizes those who are overweight.

  • Posted By: sublime1989 @ 12/08/2007 9:47:44 AM

You people are sick. Why do you worry about other people? You know what I really don't care if i'm fat so deal with it. Who the hell are you to judge other people? You're obviously the one sitting on your computer all day commenting on things you know nothing about. Heres some advice...GET A LIFE AND WORRY ABOUT YOURSELF. go be stupid and ignorant somewhere else.

Obesity is a health hazard. Ask anyone in the health care field how ruinous obesity is for good health. Can you imagine an operation on a 400 pound human. It is ridiculous, difficult and dangerous. You can blame your thyroid, blame your ovaries, blame your metabolism, but sticking too much food in your mouth is the real problem.

    • Posted By: Onelife_Onebody @ 12/08/2007 9:47:33 AM

Rich, are you really as ignorant as you sound? Health factors are a huge issue with obesity. Obesity can be chemical, it can be hormonal, it can be related to hypothyroidism and it can be a side effect of prescription medication. For some, yes the issue is simple. They take in more calories than they burn. When people like you degrade the obese it doesn't make them want to lose weight. It makes them want to drown their sorrows in food. For some it is not as simple as getting up and exercising. The morbidly obese can die from strenuous activity. Even starting out with 10 minutes of walking in place will help in the long run. Simple changes can be made to lose weight.
Quit the caffeine and carbonated beverages. Not only is that excess unnecessary sugar intake, carbonation has been proven to stretch the stomach. Also, it is possible to gain a pound a week just from liquid calories.
Avoid fast food. We all know greasy food is bad for us. Did you know that a kid's meal is the proper serving size for a grown adult? Not to mention the trans fat from the lard it is cooked in.
Eat every 3 hours. 3 meals and 3 snacks. Limit caloric intake to 10-13 times your ideal weight. For example, if you want to weigh 150lbs, intake should be between 1500 and 1950.
Watch sodium intake. Try to keep sodium to 1200-1500mg per day. Sodium retains water!!!
Be sure to take in 50-60g of protein a day. Protein helps build lean muscle. Lean muscle is what burns fat.
Curb carbs. Do not exclude carbs from your life but reduce carb intake to 180-220g a day.
Don't fall victim to fad diets. Weight loss is about lifestyle change not yo-yo dieting.
Follow a balanced plan: 6 fats, 3 dairy, 200 carbs, 55 protein, 6 vegetable and fruit.
Buy a food scale. Trust me it won't take long before you can tell how much something weighs just by looking at it.
Get a buddy. It is always better to have a partner in crime. Not only for moral support, but as a checks and balances system.
Create a reward system. Set goals and when you reach those goals, reward yourself. Lose 10lbs in 2 months and get that new DVD or CD you want. When you lose 25 in 4 months get a new pair of jeans. 50 in 8 months is a new outfit. 100lbs in 18 months, honey get that new wardrobe because YOU EARNED IT!!!

Thats funny, but not nice! You wouldn't want someone saying things like that about you!

  • Posted By: skaterbws @ 12/08/2007 9:44:45 AM

Fat is not the new norm, somebody is just saying that because they are fat and are trying to cope with it.

  • Posted By: Cupcake @ 12/08/2007 9:37:43 AM

You people are disgusting. There are people who have reasons why they can't loose weight and they are not happy about it. Those who judge have never had the problem. So do not judge what you do not understand. NO one would choose to be fat. And yes for some it will always be a struggle but don't say its because they only eat all the time. thats not the case in many cases. STOP judging others.

    • Posted By: rich99 @ 12/08/2007 9:43:04 AM

Cupcake sweety- If we videotaped your eating habits over a 24 hour period, you would understand that most obese people have no idea what they are shoving into their faces. THAT is the real perception problem. Don't try to rationalize why obese humans should have my respect for their food addiction.

  • Posted By: crushed94 @ 12/08/2007 9:41:14 AM

Is fat the new norm? NO!!! F*!# NO!!!! HOW BOUT WE MAKE SELF CONTROL AND EXERCISE THE NORM!!!

  • Posted By: Solace @ 12/08/2007 9:40:38 AM

Our greatest downfall in the fight against personal obesity issues is not how much we as a nation are eating, but WHAT we're eating. We're so tied up in the mass rush to accomplish every little thing that's shoved into our daily schedules to sit for a quiet well chewed healthy meal. Instead we opt for the convenience of the nearest drive through window or having the local pizza place deliver clogged arteries in a box. We feed our children what is quick and simple to make and usually comes from a box or a can *ie hamburger helper or spaghettios , mac n' cheese* because after a long day of working to pay our ways, we're too worn thin to master a good homecooked meal. The medical conditions that result from this self abuse in turn create an even more disastrous position to be in. Look at the rise in cancers..in diabetes. Unless socially, we can step back and take the time out of our busy schedules to maintain a healthier lifestyle, the trend will only continue.

To defend your husband, in my opinion we do not think of our wives as fat. I saw a pic of my wife after our 2nd child and i can't remember her ever looking that heavy, but she was. Now she has lost weight and I don't think of her any differently. She is just attractive no matter what weight she is!

Most people in this society are just plain old lazy and unmotivated.drowing themselves in self pitty. If we had a flag to represent us with other flags of people in this world we would win the heffer award. While People in countries like Darfur are wasting away.... Very sad. Maybe if the overweight people were faced with these images everyday they'd choose not to over indulge and send some of that food to countries with people who are starving to death. Meanwhile the people who are purposefully starving themselves should be shown classic nude/dressed images of beauty painted by world renound artists and see that never was there an image painted to depict people as beautiful with a skeletal body, And also maybe these peple would choose to put some clothes on. Not everyone is ment to be thin or ment to be obese... There are thyroid diseases and high metabolisms etc....Obese is a different story....

  • Posted By: Cupcake @ 12/08/2007 9:34:30 AM

You people are digusting. Who are you to judge anyone. Some people do have reasons why they can't loose weight and the only ones who DO NOT get that are the ones who never had the problem. Don't judge what you don't understand.

Why is it that weight is always associated with overeating? I am indeed overweight but not because of the way I eat or my lack of exercise or because I am lazy. I have a legitimate medical condition called Hypothyroidism which effects many areas of my body including the way my metabolism works. I take medication for it, work out daily, and eat healthy foods. Yet just because I am over weight you assume i am all of these things

    • Posted By: relicface @ 12/05/2007 4:42:01 PM

If your taking thyroid medication you are not hypothyroid. Your fat because you consume more calories then you need to. IT's that simple people. No excuses.

      • Posted By: lynzeeqwe @ 12/08/2007 9:37:29 AM

I am 21 years old and all my life I have been able to eat whatever I wanted while maintaining about the same weight; I am 5'6 and was generally between 132 and 134 lbs. I didn't eat crap all the time, but if I wanted a cheeseburger I didn't have to think twice about it. A few months ago I was suddenly tired all the time and I had started gaining weight even though I was actually eating healthier than I ever had in my life -- no soft drinks, more vegetables and fruits, etc. Well, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I had gained almost ten pounds in a few weeks. I started exercising regularly (30 min. 5x a day) and I still only lost three pounds in a month. So lay off these people. It's really frustrating, especially when you're not used to gaining weight and the medicine you take every day doesn't seem to help.

Are you a doctor? People who have thyroid disorders do in fact take thyroid medication. That's what it's for.

        • Posted By: jjrogers68 @ 12/05/2007 7:53:58 PM

I have taken thyroid meds for almost 20 years. It is a PROVEN FACT that even with suplementation your metabolism functioning abnormally slower than those with normal thryoid function. I too excercise 40 - 50 minutes per day (elliptical running), at limit my calories to 1200 yet have steadily gained weight for the past two decades. My thyroid levels are monitored very closely because too much can cause bone loss density. Try reading about TSH, T4, T3, and Hashimoto's thyroidism before you pass judgement. This is a very common disease and is prevalent in woman - all of my sister and mom have this disease and all have weight issues - I am 5'1" tall and weight 170lbs and am by far the smallest in my family. Oh, and by the way, take a look at what MSG is used for - too fatten rats for research - try finding food without this marvelous little additive. Ah, then there is aspartame and splenda, one metabolizes into phermaldahyde and the other into a molecule similar to DDT. No wonder Americans are sooooo unhealthy. Did ya know that aspartame was denied by the FDA until Donald Rumsfield pushed it through - he was the CEO of the company. I am just saying - do some research, you'll be amazed at what garbage is polluting our food supply. Just some info to make you think twice about your pre-conceived ideas about weight.
