Yes, there are those individuals that due to health issues, they are unfortunately stuck in a place where they have no control of weight gain; my best friend has gained over a 100 lbs. in the past year for this reason. However, I work with approximately 25 women in a social service agency where there is more often than not, desserts, taco chips and dip, etc. in the staff room for all to help themselves. Several weeks ago I was with a co-worker who ate 4 pieces of Naniamo Bars and then the next day announced that she had gain another 10 lbs. and blamed it by being pre-menopausal. Please people take some resposiblity over something that most of us can conrtrol by what we choose to put in our mouths. Others I see have more food at lunch than I likely would have for dinner and no, that is not their largest meal of the day. And yes, I know what is like to watch what one eats as in 1991 I was diagnosised with a congential heart condition, joined Watch Watchers, lost 30 lbs, learned that it was important to exercise regularily and no that doesn't mean I need to go to a gym every day, and still weigh the same today, 16 years later. If you do nothing else, and wonder how it is that you cont. to gain weight, access a caloric intake counter and just see what some foods that may appear healthy, are far from it.

All I'm trying to say is lets not talk about smoking here. Sure, smoking is bad. It's bad for your health, but this blog is not about smoking. It's about being overweight. I sympathize with you and others who face a challenge. But it is not hopeless. If you are happy with being overweight that is fine with me. But if you want to endure a more pleasurable life where you can take part in more activities and not have to face the harsh words the inevitable bully on the street, then admit that you have the power to do something about it, and DO something about it. Genetics and thyroid may make it harder for you, but it is not impossible. I???m sorry, I just don???t believe it is impossible to loose weight.

  • Posted By: spudwack123 @ 12/09/2007 2:17:58 AM

So we are back on comparing being overweight to smoking? What's the point? There are tons of other things that you can do that are unhealthy. Why are we talking about them? Isn't this supposed to be about America's weight problem>

    • Posted By: hotchick @ 12/09/2007 2:41:35 AM

Actually its about women having a positive self image and why some are striving to lose weight and some are not because they are happy where they are at. My comment on how people view others who are overweight is directly involved in peoples self image and how they see themselves. I feel like it is good to strive to be HEALTHY...but too many people want to focus on others outward appearances. The comment on smoking was answering your comment to me.

I have had an eating disorder and have learned to change my life and my lifestyle. Changes make the difference. Keeping the same behavioral habits will keep you unhappy and unchallenged in life.

Speaking from the male point of view, most women are too uptight about their bodies. Just relax you're beautiful!!!

To "In Control" Thank you for the apology, I guess maybe being a little more clear next time would be a good thing. This is obviously a very touchy hard subject for many people. I have dealt with this issue for a long time, not only with myself, but with a couple friends and I was in a couple support groups. I would never judge another person with this issue. If someone is fat and happy, why not just let them be. Every one has something, something that is hard to deal with in our horribly judgemental society. One of the comments I read and I have not read them all by any means---it would take forever, but one made the point that no one is nice any more. We are all so wrapped up in our own world. A smile, a nod, a "hello", all those little things really do make a big difference in someone's day. Esp. in someone's day who for whatever their reason, are feeling depressed, ashamed, or unworthy. To all of you who are leaving the harsh, nasty, horrible comments---feel really blessed for yourself that you have never ever been through a life-altering event, were never born with a difigurement of any kind, have nothing that you would like to recieve a little love and compassion for in having to deal with it on a daily basis---in must be really nice. But also remember that because you are SO blessed, you can in no way possible know what it is to deal with something that someone like you who is free of flaw, could never ever comprehend or should even comment. If you don't have the experience what gives you the right to be critical and so judgemental. My favorite quote by anyone is ???Don't criticize what you don't understand, son. You never walked in that man's shoes.??? A quote everyone should read and understand. This quote was said by Elvis Presley. Someone I am sure many will love to leave a judgemental comment about. But unless you knew him personally and well you have no right to judge just in case you don't understand the quote.
"In Control"---I thank you again for your apology. Try to find compassion for all those you know who are struggling. Sixties.

did i say happiness was tantamount to love? no, "spudwack," i certainly didn't.

  • Posted By: spudwack123 @ 12/09/2007 2:33:08 AM

Are you suggesting that only overweight women find love?

  • Posted By: skinnyminny2 @ 12/09/2007 2:31:51 AM

This situation is actually worse than I thought....women don't even want to lose enough weight to put them in the 'normal' category? You hear them complain about their weight but they do little about it because all their friends are heavy--and it actually takes hard work to be thin/fit. I run 50 miles a week and eat mostly vegetarian to maintain 115 lb at 5'8". I prefer to hit the road instead of the buffet or the cookie jar. Each choice has an effect, and it shows.

I have a comment for you. I understand where you are coming from for the thyroid thing,,,,except I never had a thyroid problem until I had my second child and now I do, and let me tell you I work hard and long hours I take care of two children. I DO NOT SIT ON MY ASS EATING OREOS OR TWINKIES. I take medication everyday to control my thyroid. No I am not a hundred pounds overweight but I am not my perfect weight so what, am I making it up...I wish... I wish I sat at home watching tv eating bon bons but nope I work and I eat healthy and I take medication for my thyroid idiot.

    • Posted By: MrA$$ @ 12/09/2007 2:30:43 AM

I'm sorry... is medication the answer to not exresicing... My mother has a thyroid problem for the last 37 years... busted her ass working a full time career and raised 5 children ... she weighs 120-125.

sounds like the truth hurts... get out and exersice... do you at least go for a walk???

I am a 22 year old women who had to learn by herself how to eat healthy; I looked around and saw my entire family obese. They had or have diabetes and heart problems, and I don't want to have those problems.I think once people see this occur in their own families they might be a little more open to choosing a healthy life style with excercise and eating in moderation. Though sometimes they might not have a choice due to a bad metabolism or thyroid.

Or you could just give in to temptation and don't worry about it.

Don't take life so seriously, you'll never get out alive.

What shocks me is some of the comments made on here to overweight people are just hateful. Why in society to people feel like it is acceptable to be hateful to overweight people and deem them as discusting? I see people make comments like why don't you put down the double quarter pounder and do something. Did this person tell you they sit there and eat double quarter pounders? How can you discriminate and throw hate at some one like that and asume that you know what they sit around doing? It just bewilders me. You don't see people going up to a smoker and yell obsenities at them for smoking a cigarette. That is a far more unhealthy problem and doesn't make you attractive either. Its almost like some people are stuck in Junior High and still feel the need to make themselves feel better by picking on the fat person. What did the overweight individual do to you to make you hate them???? I feel like if you have nothing productive to say then why say it!!!! There are many differant reasons as to why an obese person is obese. Everyone is differant. There are a lot of obese people that struggle with emotional issue and use food instead of drugs or alcohol to cope with these issues. Do you think your hateful comments are helping them or pushing them towards where they find comfort...in food?

    • Posted By: Bing @ 12/09/2007 1:16:05 AM

Fat people are inherently disgusting. Disgust is a gut reaction. It is not something you think about having. If you are disgusted by a person with open sores all over their face, it is not your fault. It is a gut reaction. People who are extremely obese used to be freak show oddities, and now you see them everywhere. But that doesn't make it any less freakish or disgusting. I'm sorry, but these are just the facts.

      • Posted By: hotchick @ 12/09/2007 1:39:07 AM

Ummmm....NO....if I came across someone on the street that had sores on there face I would have compassion. But I guess thats were you and I differ. I'm just sorry for people that you come in contact with, because you obviously feel like you have been put here to judge others. Trust me YOU are not any better than anyone else.

        • Posted By: sixtieschick61 @ 12/09/2007 2:01:23 AM

If I saw someone with sores, or any other MEDICAL problem or any kind of disfigurement, I too would would feel compassion. it is usually my experience that people who feel like you do have many problems that they are not facing and judge other people to make themselves feel better about their personal issues. We all have sweetie, none of us are immune. I am overweight so after my next comment you can save yourself from replying that I am probably fat. I have approx. 40 pounds give or take that I could lose. I have never ever been disgusted by any other human being---obesity does not disgust me---that is a strong word for someone to use and I thank God I know no one personally who shares your view, because that is disgusting, judgemental and abusive. It must be nice to FEEL superior to others---for YOU!

  • Posted By: spudwack123 @ 12/09/2007 2:23:46 AM

I believe that the socio/political trend towards an anorexic American idol was a conscious decision made by those at the top of the food chain in response to an ever fattening American populous in attempt to cure a problem by making those overweight feel bad. I???m not saying I agree with it, it???s just an observation I think may hold some weight.

    The whole point is:

Why does the human being assume they can "look like" anything from an Hippopotamus to a stick bug?

And, call all the variation "normal?"

And, blame George Bush, McDonalds and their thyroids for the problem of obesity?

Ever see a fat cheetah? No
Ever see a fat bird? No
Ever see a fat white-tailed deer? No
Ever see a fat human? Yes, lots.

Reason: Too much consumption, not enough activity.

Stop blaming the "government", food additives, "unhealthy" foods, Europe, health clubs, attitudes, allergies,etc...

Pogo says."We have met the enemy, and he is us......."

Believe it or not, your body can process almost anything. But if you ingest 3000 calories and metabolize 2000 calories, 1000 calories are stored as adipose, fat, for those in the know.....

Your body dosen't care if it lives in Europe or Mexico, you are a Democrat or Republican, or failed to vote in the last election. It does care if you EAT TOO MUCH ! ! ! ! ! !

Michelangelo sculpted and painted the near perfect human body shape half a millenia ago. I think he had it right. Excessive variation from the reasonable ideal body shape and size will be taken care of by evolution, just as soon as we bankrupt the medical system that tries to fix the aberrant variations.

what about those who drink they take a lot out of the health system do you drink? How would you like people talking to you the way you are others here sham on you. That never helped anyone in life. Are you a nurse or Dr IF SO PLEASE tell me where I DON'T EVER WANT TO BE TREATED THERE!

Assuming you finished high school, spelling, grammar and context never having been taught to you--- why do you think only a drunk can create a real discussion about this topic?
Why am I answering an idiot?

Remember, nativemedic, you have a choice of where you go for your medical care-- the caregivers in the hospital have to accept every excessive addiction, behavior, overweight,"never saw a doctor", ignorant, whining, "fix me or I'll sue", ungrateful patient that plops themselves in our ERs.

You do me a favor- go somewhere else.

Oh, my kingdom for a man that looks like David! Yes, I HAVE seen fat white-tail, in the wild, hunters LOVE 'em!
BTW, I am an RN and learned a long time ago not to judge. In case you're wondering, I'm 5'6" and 165#. My cholesterol is 180 and I'm healthy as a horse. I'm also happily married (38 years) to a wonderful man who loved me at 115# and loves me more now.
Re. BBW: Look at Queen Latifah. She's gorgeous, talented and not at all ashamed of her size. Talk about a DIVA!

        Lindlou-
I am not judging, but you are a tad husky. Remember the fat-ass deer gets shot more often, right?

Unfortunately, for one poster who sent a picture of his companion which I neither judge nor condemn nor praise, I would prefer to look at Michelangelo's David or deMilo's Venus.

You said, "Ummm....hello....smoking IS more unhealthy than being overweight." is response to my comment about how I thought another user was deverting the conversation by claiming that society should forget about the weight problem and take down the smoking problem as if we can't do two things at once. My coment was in response to his, and yours, to mine, so I assumed you weren't trying to make a new point, but instead continue an ongoing convo.

    • Posted By: hotchick @ 12/09/2007 2:15:24 AM

Sorry I assumed you were commenting on my FIRST comment, and going off the other derogatory statement you've made to others...it just seemed like you were a hater. So...my bad. I would like to say however that a person that is 10 lbs overweight is not unhealthy but smoking even one cigarette IS.

  • Posted By: spudwack123 @ 12/09/2007 2:14:08 AM

Yup, but how do you keep people on track about the topic at hand when they continually make excuses and divert the subject. These are logical mishaps in a constructive conversation.

  • Posted By: spudwack123 @ 12/09/2007 2:12:09 AM

If I spelled something incorrectly, I apologies. I'm only trying to type quickly to stay involved. But what does spelling have to do with America???s weight problem? Please stay on topic.

  • Posted By: Swishersweet @ 12/09/2007 1:52:45 AM

I am very overweight...300+ and i realized lately that the heavier I get the less I want to lose. Because of my size now I would be happy being ...lets say...240 because that is 60lb for me my ideal weight has gone from 130 to 175.. Losing 190lbs seems soooo far out of reach.but losing 145 feels like something that I could do!
So that is why I think that overweight women would be happy at a weight that is still considered to be obese....because any amount of wieght lost is a GREAT thing!

    • Posted By: CryptoManiac @ 12/09/2007 2:11:08 AM

I personally would be happy at 260.

    • Posted By: MrA$$ @ 12/09/2007 2:03:22 AM

I am curious as to what a typical day to day diet is over the course of a normal week... what is in the cupboards and refrigerator of a person that weights 2-3 times what they should?

  • Posted By: spudwack123 @ 12/09/2007 2:02:35 AM

God was brought up because some fat lady said that she didn't have to worry about being fat because it was part of God's plan. I then exposed that she was a hypocrit.

    • Posted By: CryptoManiac @ 12/09/2007 2:07:53 AM

I understand that. However, it is irrelevant and I'd rather see this be a semi-constructive debate and not dissolve into name calling and a holy war.
