Bethesda - There are girls at age 12 who SHOULD be dieting. If you're obese at any age you need to take the necessary steps to make yourself healthy.

VERY TRUE!!
They shouldn't be "DIETING!" Their parents should be providing them with a healthier life style!
I would define that as dieting. I'm in no way suggesting that 12 year olds starve themselves or pop pills.
Wow- very true! In America no one blinks an eye at a fat person - every a gigantic fat person. It has become very normal to olive in a world wiht extremely large people. AS an EXTREMELY large person, though, when I travel to other countries, especially Asia, it is VERY OBVIOUS that this is an American mind-set. I have been stared at, photographed, touched, grabbed, giggled about, and pointed at. Just like Europe centuries ago, larger people equalled money and leisure. It is the same from what I see aroudn the world - the chubbier kids are the westernized ones, the wealthy ones who have a McDonald's diet and a video game lifestyle. And that saddens me - we are not doing the world any favors by exporting our super-sized lifestyles. So,yes, here in America, the commonness of obesity makes it normal - the rest of the world, much of it literally starving to death, doesn't work the same way.
I am one of those people that eat right (very little white sugar and processed food, eats tons of fruit, veggies and whole grains), drink only water during the day and exercise 45-1 hour a day, 4-5 days a week. I've run one marathon and am training for another. Guess what? I'm still 75 pounds overweight. There is no medical reason for me not to be able to lose weight and the doctors and nutritionists are amazed at all that I do and how little weight I lose (ie, 5 pounds in 6 months). I am completely healthy in every other aspect, from blood pressure to cholesteral and fasting blood sugar.
When people look at overweight people, they assume that fat=lazy. That is simply not the case for many people.
I am in the same boat as you. When the doctors tell me that I must not be doing something right, I laugh. Apparently we're medical mysteries, but boy can we kick some skinny people butt!
I am in the overweight to obsese catagory. I've seen a lot of insensitive comments here on both sides. But, the comments I see from so called health professionals doesn't surprise me. I have met resistance from my doctor and others when attempting to even get a referral to a dietician. "It's not nessacary." Well gee maybe it is if I need to lose weight and prevent health problems that now I have. I try to watch what I eat, and I admit the exercise protion has been an issue. But I am willing to try. Anyway each person has issues other than just the weight. If I had only the choice of a incurable disease and being over weight , well I guess I'll be what I am, ME.
Friend. Unless you have some undiagnosed thyroid disorder (which only about 2% of the population suffers from) you most likely suffer from another ailment. You lack discipline.
Call me insensitive, but I wish you no ill will. The answer you seek lies within. Gird up your loins! Put down the fork. Walk, run, swim. Just don't eat as much. There is no magic bullet. Change your lifestyle and live better. The "insensitive" responses I have seen just reflect the fact that no one likes a whiny undisciplined excuse.
Best of luck!
I probably won't ever fit into the size 2 you all are talking about, no matter how many adjustments the designer makes.
I will be glad to keep fitting into the size 14 i am and try my best to stay away from the 16-18 size.
Its like my dad always said (growing up as a heavy weight child) it doesn't matter what you look like and your size , as long as your healthy.
And i can't complain 4 kids and a size 14 ain't all that bad these days.
Size 2 - don't think its happening in this lifetime.
we are not all beautiful. my health insurance is going up because your obsesity related diseases and health problems are driving up costs of coverage. and why can't we be happy iwth the body god gave us? i'm quite sure when you were born, you weren't 50-100lbs overweight. why can't you take care of the body you were given?
granted, some people have a genuine medical condition that causes them to gain weight, or are naturally bigger people (but still healthy)..but there's no excuse to keep eating that pie and sit on the couch playing video games or watching tv and eating a whole pizza, and then crying that you're tired or you've got a gut. i'm having this same argument w/my S.O. you're hungry? eat a banana, THEN a cookie...not a bag of cookies.
when are people going to take responsiblity for their OWN ACTIONS???
I am so sad for your significant other. Beauty lies in who we are not how we look. Why is your insurance going up? Because our country is so unhealthy, not because we're all fat. My grandfathers, both of whom are/were otherwise in good health and at healthy weights, had heart attacks requiring quadruple bypasses. My grandmother was 5 feet tall, weighed about 105 pounds and died from lung cancer because she smoked for most of her life. My dad's wife is the same size as my grandmother was, yet her cholesterol is through the roof. As for me, I'm 5 feet 4 inches and about 270 pounds. My heart is in excellent health, my blood pressure is perfect, and my cholesterol is stellar. As far as health insurance is concerned, my gigantic fat behind is a much better bet than any of their fit and trim bodies.

sthernbelle - What happened to southern graciousness? Gone, I suppose. (By the way, it's "latter" not "later".) Guess we all stand to learn a few things...
People, You dont need money to lose weight...Eating less sugar, things that contain fat(especially meat) , Sodium, any kind of soda (even if it says diet) anything with Caffiene. Coffees, teas with caffiene. Dont even try to consume anything that says diet..its a gimmick. Try eating lots of Veggies and fruits drink lots of water and stay away from juices that are bottled. NO MORE SUGAR!! you dont have to go to the gym and try to be like the rest just watch your diet and walking around the block 20 minutes 3X's a week: Priceless. In One month you will lose a WHOLE lot of weight. I PROMISE!
what suddenly brought you to this realization? you mentioned above being fat at one time, everyone, (unless things have suddenly changed in this universe without my knowlege) has the right to be what they want. your negative comments i'm sure mean nothing to many. you sound like people who used to smoke and now they can no longer stand the smell, only you were fat and can no loger stand to see fat people. the world would be so much better if people could accept the fact we are all the same. how cliche i know, but come on you lead your life and everyone else will lead theirs.
God I hope this is not they new look for women its gross!
Gross, What the hell is wrong with Americans when we try to justify being overweight and obese? One of the many reasons we are the laughing stock of the rest of world.
I am personally a size 14 womans and i don't ever see myself getting in a size 2, even if the designer messed with the tags.
My fat butt will keep wearing the size 14 and try and stay away from the size 16 - 18 if at all posssable.
sthrnbell, it's "latter" (not "later"). Your note is very ungracious for a "southern belle".

You should google the report that found that women with wider hips also have higher IQ's. I think if I had my choice of fitting in with the likes of you or being an intelligent and strong woman, I'd choose the later!
I don't thing I would ever give much credibility to a report that says women with wider hips have a higher IQ.
The report said women w/ wider hips tend to have children w/ higher IQ's.
I am 28 years of age... it took 4 years when i was able to get help from the Doctors in diagnosing why I couldnt lose weight.
I worked out, ate healthy, etc... and still gained weight no matter what. Turns out no matter what I did, I gained and they finally figured out what was wrong: My Thyroid... I have hypothyroidism... which does run in my family but the doctor's didnt think that was what wrong 10 years ago when I had first started gaining.
I have had to change my eatting habits even more since being diagnosed with hiatal hernia, hyperglycemia, and of course the hypothyroidism. I have dropped 45 pounds this year.
But it hasnt been easy. Those who havent been overweight dont know what it is truly like to get frustrated with trying lose the weight and hitting a brick wall everytime.
I have hit a plateau and am changing things up... and hopefully will lose another 45 pounds by the end of 2008... but once again I want the realistic goals.
For those with medical reasons for gaining weight, it takes time, right diagnosis, and friends who care. It can work but if you are insulting those are overweight, all you are doing is helping them be depressed and not helping them with what they need.
Wow, the people on this site are cruel. I agree with both Reader1234 and King Kong. This is terrible, we are all suppose to be adults and we're acting like children...
It's true. The more unhappy you are about the way you look, the more pounds you add. That's what happened with me. I don't think it's so much that women want to look anorexic. For me it's more of a thing that they don't make plus sized fashionable clothes. I still want to be able to shop at stores like Guess or BCBG instead of going into Lane Bryant (sp?). Besides, I've always been an athlete all my life. I have bigger muscles than most men...point is, stay active! Eat right and exercise!
It's all a matter of ENERGY. The US consumes more energy than any other country in the world (some estimates are 70% - 75%), yet we represent approximately 5% of the world's population. Though some of the energy is used to provide goods and services for the rest of the world, most of the use is to provide for goods and services for our overweight population. Our weight population is changing the world.
I am overweight and some of the comments I have read today are scary....Do some of you skinny, perfect people hate us so much that you would post this stuff so that the world can see just how ignorant we are about the #2 killer in america. Instead of putting us down lend a hand somehow..I promise we won't bite it off.
One last comment on exercising: As a general rule of thumb for beginners, if you're not sweating within 10 minutes of cardio, you're not pushing yourself hard enough. Everyone is different, but the best way to monitor yourself is by heart rate. Typically the machines will have lower heart rate zone titled 'weight loss' and a higher heart rate zone titled 'cardio' (or something to that effect). The ranges for these target heart rate zones vary based upon your age. Begin in the middle to upper range of the weight loss zone, and build yourself up to the cardio zone over time.
Part 2 lending hand: Throw away your scale: Keep in mind that as you are starting an exercise program and begin to lose fat, you are gaining lean muscle. You may notice your clothes fitting looser before the scale shows any progress. Another simple but effective tip is to avoid soda or sweetened drinks and have a glass of water with lunch instead. Assuming you were already intaking 2000 calories per day and 2000 calories was the amount necessary to sustain your body, one soda per day would be enough to add roughly 2.5 pounds of fat within a month. Know that in order to just maintain your current weight, calories in must equal calories out.
My lending hand: Begin and maintain and exercise regiment. Diet alone is enough for a lot of people. The first month of exercise is always the hardest, but if you get through it, it will become easier. With time, your body won???t feel right if you don???t go to the gym so the motivation to go begins to perpetuate itself. Most people who take the right step in weight loss by beginning to exercise will often quit too early because they become impatient with results. Results will come, but the weight you gained did not come overnight and you should not expect to lose it overnight either. How much time it will take depends on your current weight and weight loss goals, but you should have noticeable results within 3 months time if you perform 30 minutes of cardio at least 3x a week. Be sure to listen to your body and ease yourself into a cardio program if you have not exercised in some time. It???s better to start slowly than to have a bad experience and give up altogether. A lot of the machines have heart rate monitors which give a good indication if you???re overdoing it.
I am glad this article pointed out how designers play with size tags! I am a petite woman w/ a healthy BMI for my height and age - And I am always amazed how Large size 0 - 2 sometimes are! This is very frustrating for someone who is smaller whose size almost seems non-existent, because larger is becoming the new norm.
In recent years, larger size women have received a lot of support so they could feel more comfort in their own skin, "sexy curves," "bootylicious," etc. --However, this seems to come at the expense of smaller framed women who are accused of wanting to have model type bodies. Like myself, some of these women may be naturally smaller sized, and in fact they may still be curvy --only on a smaller scale.
I think everyone should aim for a healthy BMI. Size is relative, e.g., an individual who is 4'9 and a size 0, or who is 6' and a size 16 or 18, could both be equally heathy.
