Obesity should never be accepted! Get off the couch and get some excercise. There are major health concerns with being overweight. I think it's is just an excuse for lazy people. You have to work at things in life and sacrifice. I cannot eat whatever I want and expect to stay thin. Get a GRIP. Everything worthwhile in life is self discipline at times.

It's not ONLY bad if a women is obese. It's UNHEALTHY for anyone to be that over weight. People tend to torget that being "in shape" doesnt mean the "shape" of your body, its the kind of shape that means "how is the old body ticking along?" We tend to forget that our health is what is important, not our looks. Being over weight and especially obese is NOT ok in any fashion. It's just glutten ridden people that cannot control their food intake. It's not about what you eat all the time, but how you eat it...and obese people fall victim to both of these. They dont eat right, and they eat too much. Who needs 4 cheese burgers? Or 2 refills on a "super sized" coke, and why are you drinking and eating that crap anyways? People need to start realizing that if they hate themselves for how they look, they have no one to blame but their own willpower, or lack there of.

Wow, "the girls who were the most dissatisfied with their size tended to become more sedentary over time and paid less attention to maintaining a healthy diet." Ya THINK? What kinda idiot wouldn't realize that. I am extremely overweight now because of body image issues. I've always felt as big as I am now, and it was a self fufilling prophecy.

The BMI computer is completely offbase. I used the computer and entered my height (6'1") and weight (210 lbs.) and this computer says that i am over weight. Hah!!! I am 210 lbs of solid muscle and in extremely good shape. I have been an athlete all of my life and at 58 years of age can actually embarrass men much younger than myself. I do not have love handles or a beer gut and find the use of "computers" to determine a condition of overweight to be completely useless and also dangerous. My body fat is between 8-10%. Ask any well educated nutritionist and you will learn that my body fat is difficult to achieve without strenuous physical activity in the form of excercise. The only other way is malnutrition. I work in a health related field and assist people with weight loss almost daily. i am very sucessful at it because i insist on an exercise program after a physical by my clients medical practitioner.

The problem with "eating ice cream" or "stop eating twinkies" is that this is not the problem and you have missed the point!!!!!!! People who gain weight do it over time and usually over eat not noticing and listening to ques that they are full. I find those general, judgmental statements insulting and just plan ignorant.

Comment: I don't understand why people always make the assumption that if you are overweight it means you are sitting on the couch and eating icecream and drinking beer all day. Vicious Smitty needs to get a clue! There are alot of reasons that people are overweight - some need to have their thyroids checked because it is not functioning properly. Insurance carriers should offer to pay for part of a person's healthclub membership to entice people to lose weight.

We as Americans focus on image too much. But on the other hand indulge in countless fast food and restaurant meals. Not only overweight people are dying of heart attacks. We need to slow down and eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Can vegetables are just as good as those that come straight from the garden. You can be overweight and be healthy just exercise and eat right. Don't worry about what Brittney, Jessica, Monique or Halle Berry look like focus on you and what you want to have out of your life. This goes for men and women. Watch the Biggest Loser those people dramatically changed their lives no surgery what so ever just dedication. You have to realize you have a problem before you can solve your weight problem. You don't have to look emaciated to be sexy and you don't have look 300 plus lbs. to look sexy. It's what you make it, find a medium. It takes time to lose wait so be patient, the best things come to those who wait. My heaviest wait was 256 in July, 2007, through exercise and eating normal portions I now weight 219 lbs. I am continuing to lose weight because I feel so great to have shed those lbs. I realized I needed help and for those who need to eat or are under weight it takes as much dedication to find yourself worthy just focus on the future, because if you don't eat you will be cutting it short.

Also the cost of a diet regiment that really works are extremelly high. Most women, especially in todays society, simply can't afford this. If it is such a health risk why isn't anything being done to find a diet that really works and that doesn't cost thousands of dollars. Some real help would be more appreciated than constantly hearing how unhealthy it is. Some help without all the money making gimmicks currently offered.

The doctors are working from charts drafted a long time ago and based on facts of healthy normal from the same time period. I am looking forward to seeing healthy weight charts based on todays facts. I believe my size may be in healthy normal range, because I have no health problems at age 40, 5'8" 255 pounds.

Hey Mr. Spockman, I bet the two woman on the front of the coverstory could snap you like a twig. That should make you want to puke, not the fact that they are overweight. How superficial do you have to be to make a comment like that??

Obesity should never be acceptable. There are severe health issues to deal with. I just think everthing is too convenient. We all need to get movin instead of sitting on the couch. I am 5'5 and 135. I have maintained my weight for several years. You have to have limits and cannot over induldge.

We all need to start to boycott the disigners who are manipulating us with these "new" size charts! How ridiculous! Who cares if you are truely a 2 or a 16! As long as you are in good health, eat well, and exercise what's the big deal!

I have lost 51 lbs over the last year and a half. Yes, I know that is slow, but I am 58 years old and I don't want to end up with too many sags. I have a goal weight of 144lbs and I am 5'3" tall. According to the BMI chart I will still be overweight at that time. Is there any consideration for age or build differences. I weighed 121 when I was a teenager and was considered no more than a lb or 2 over weight. I would be afraid to be that thin at my age. What is your answer to this. P. Brookings

Carpe Diem: "Live the day!" I'm not going to starve and worry when I can be happy and jolly; life's too short to not enjoy a piece of cheesecake.

I agree with fletchette 100%, why is it just about women? Why does the media accept overweight men, and make women sex objects?

There are many other studies that suggest ACTIVITY is the key to being a healthy weight (whatever the number is). Sedentary thin women are at a higher risk of disease than active overweight women. Dieting only adds weight over time. Eat healthy but don't starve yourself, and get moving!!
