That was so funny that I forgot to laugh. Oh yeah, and you forgot to think before you allowed the diarrhea to run out your mouth. You need to invest in some Immodium.

When the day comes that overweight people can just simply stop "being fat" will be the day that you can just start being intelligent.

If it were that easy everyone would look emaciated. That's like saying start eating and stop looking emaciated. Everyone is not built te be skinny. It's not healthy to be obese or super skinny. You should encourage people not name call that is so childish. What if the shoe was on the other food.

Atheist? At the second Vatican, the Catholic Church decided that choice was the way of God! God gave us choice so that we could be his friend, according to most modern religions. Who???s the atheist??

Instead of bashing each other, we should focus on what companies put into our food, namely TRANS FATS and HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP.

Those should be outlawed. They have 0 nutritional value and cause obesity, heart disease, cancer, etc.

  • Posted By: CryptoManiac @ 12/09/2007 1:31:02 AM

Okay, let's get this out of the way first. I'm a 30 year old man, 5 foot 11 inches tall and I weigh 330 pounds. So I'm a fat man. I hate my body and I can't imagine anyone else finding it attractive either. That being said, I think we need to re-evaluate this notion of "overweight".

The BMI was developed in 1830. It was developed to study the farmers in Belgium. It really doesn't apply anymore. Most americans are not farmers. We work crappy jobs in offices and get very little excercise, while dealing with stresses we were not meant to deal with.

Also, I have a problem with calling obesity an "epidemic". This isn't a disease, it is a socio-economic shift. We don't get enough excercise, and a lot of us don't have time to excercise anyway.

I, like many other people, hate my body because I have been brainwashed, since birth, to find a certain body type appealing. This is stupid, and unhealthy. All bodies are attractive.

And lastly, on a personal rant of my own... Who cares about health? We have a problem with overpopulation already. Stop trying to keep people alive longer. People are meant to die, it is the natural order of things. I may hate my body, but I thoroughly intend to enjoy my fast food and candy, because I hold no illusions about death. We are all going to die, so stop worrying.

There are an infinite number of misconceptions about weight gain and weight loss. As a board certified physician in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology (which is study of the digestive system) I believe I can add some clarity. Unfortunately, I know it will cause about a million of comments, all based in emotion and ignorance.
Simply put, weight gain is a matter of input vs. output. If you eat more calories than you use up, your body will store it and you will gain weight. If you burn up more calories than you eat, you will loose weight.
The only tissue that actually controls your metabolism is your muscle mass. Your muscle mass to fat ratio is the true determinate of metabolism.
The number one determinate of calorie burning through activity during the day is Non-exertional Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) which is the amount of activity you do during the day to complete your activities of daily living (ie work or home activities (not workout activities))
Your thyroid or other "glands" or "hormones" have nothing to do with it. This is a commonly held myth by both patients and many physicians.
There is a misunderstanding in the general population and the lay-man's (common) literature that there are good and bad proteins and good and bad carbs and good and bad fats and that food items that are good for you are a fair or reasonable substitute for the other bad stuff.
The truth, for weight loss there is NO SUCH THING. It is simply a formula of input vs output. If you take in 1 gram of carbohydrates you take in about 4 calories of food. If you take in any type of fat, you take in about 9 cal per gram. EVERYTHING that goes into your mouth has calories and contributes to you input.
The "good" and "bad" are derived from the side-effects of excess. If you don't take in excess, then it is not bad, you body will convert it into stuff it can use. But if you take in excess of the bad stuff, it will store the bad stuff and you will get the side effects of the excessive storage (which are heart disease, joint pain from too much weight, pancreas failure and diabetes due to too much stress on that organ from too much fat etc.)
So if you are fat, you took in too many calories over your lifetime, if you are slender, you haven???t.
Your body frames etc have NOTHING to do with it. If I did a bone-scan, I would see that you, if you are fat, have a normal skeleton. But I won???t waste health care dollars on that.
A simple example is that if you eat one handful of peanuts every day as a snack, you will ingest 100 extra calories per day. If you do that for a year, then you will have eaten 36,500 calories in that year. There are 3,500 calories per pound of fat. So then you WILL have gained 10 pounds in a year.
The opposite is true for weight loss.
It ALL comes down to discipline and understanding.
I hope this helps you understand.
I hope that if you have a goal then you are disciplined.

    • Posted By: Bing @ 12/09/2007 1:27:31 AM

GI Doc, your mathematical calculations are very good to remember. You have made a good point. A person does not gain five pounds unless they ate five pounds! BUT, you are missing a major part of the equation, which makes me rather suspicious of your credentials. How is it that you fail to realize that if I eat 50 calories worth of carbs that I do not necessarily have to use or store all of it. What are the intestines for, after all. What comes out of them. The amount you store is the amount you eat minus the amount you use minus the amount that goes out of your body in waste. You are also definitely not a nutritionist if you think that a diet of all candy canes is just as good as a diet containing more complex carbs. The sugar shock from sweet foods plays havoc with hormones involved in that process of energy storage we were talking about. It also contributes to wide swings in the blood sugar, which your brain uses as a major signal as to whether you should be hungry or not. If you mess with that signal, you may end up making yourself feel hungry more often, hence eat more, hence become obese. Eat foods smoothly enter your body's metabolism and don't screw up the signalling, and it will be much easier to limit the input side of the equation.

Well, I just try to walk a little ( 691 miles in 3 1/2 years; yes I keep track because I want to see if it makes a difference in my weight over time ). I try to eat right, you know more fruits, vegetables, but don't always do it. But I know that BMI index is a lot of nonsense. I am 6' tall and weigh 228 and look pretty good. I weight train once or twice a week. I know men who weigh less than me and are a couple inches taller who don't look as good. An example is my sister-in-laws son ( he is 43 and has a gut, skinny arms, no chest ). I have some fat around my waist and need to lose a few pounds but look great. He goes to lunch with his mom and wife every day, and they are all fat. Also, drink plenty of water. My sister-in-law drinks no water ever and is 64 but looks 80.

Fat people do burden society. As already mentioned, perhaps universal health care will never happen because of the liability fat people place on the system. Also, who's to say smoking is worse than being overweight? Both will kill you faster than normal...

    • Posted By: hotchick @ 12/09/2007 1:25:08 AM

Ummm....hello....smoking IS more unhealthy than being overweight. It is also just as unhealthy for the person that is around you that has to breath your smoke. You can't become overweight by an overweight persons food falling on you...but you can get cancer from second hand smoke.

  • Posted By: Martin28MA @ 12/08/2007 10:02:55 PM

There is the problem. Women are lardasses and think it's normal. Consequently they start believing that they can also be sexy and desirable, maybe just by wearing some hot skimpy clothes. The truth is, being fat is disgusting. There is nothing sexy in resembling an elefant, no matter what kind of provocative outfit you may be wearing. Fat chicks are not cute; they are ugly, unattractive, and repulsive. The problems is also that they still get attention from guys that 'go for anything' for the sake of getting some easy fun. Dudes, forget about fat chicks, and go for the hot ones only, although it requires harder work to get laid. This kind of tolerance only encourages women to disregard their bodies and focus instead on make-up and clothing.

    • Posted By: branwenofeire @ 12/08/2007 10:22:15 PM

Martin28MA: Let me play out this scenario for you: Young, fit, attractive guy meets overweight plain girl. They are both 19 years old. They become friends, then separate for six years, each living their own lives. Six years later, they meet again, both still single. He divulges to her that he's been in love with her for all those years, but didn't think he had a chance because of her self-esteem issues. Fast-forward 16 years; they're married, with four children, a nice house, a healthy marriage and an equally healthy sex life. And guess what? He's still handsome and fit, if older; and she's still overweight and plain. But they are genuinely in love. So stick that in your peace pipe and smoke it. Ass.

Narrow would be a world decided by one mind. Complex, spontaneous, and worth living in is the world of choice.

To Melodyknows-- you need to change your name to MelodyKnowsJack. You should also get an attitude adjustment. Do not tell me what I eat! I eat as I said. My food is not covered with creams or butters as you like to assume. Your attitude is what is wrong with this world-- you have never been in my shoes yet you sit in judgement of me and assume I am lazy and pig out all day. I work the way I do because after 4 children, my "wonderful" husband left to "find himself". Of course, he does not pay any child support, so that leave me to support my wonderful kids. I was 35# overweight at that time and he said I was too fat and he had met a "beautiful slender girl". Well, guess what, after she had 4 children for him, his thin beautiful wife is now #100+ over weight :) AAAAHHH,, revenge is sweet:) So, MelodyKnows Jack SHI**, please dont judge others lest you be judged as harshly. One can only hope that those like you who judge others, end up with some type of awful, disfiguring disease so that you too may expereince they type of predjice you support.

Oh, boy what an excuse. God has a plan for all of use!!! What about statistics, science, doctors??? Are you claiming that fat people live as long as the rest of us??? If God has a devine plan, then why do you get up in the morning? It's because you have choices. And clearly one of your choices is to eat too much..

  • Posted By: Jakesplace30 @ 12/09/2007 1:14:53 AM

I want to know what idiot came up with BMI. I am in the military and I work out all the time. While I don't have a 6-pack, I am in pretty good shape but I am 5'8" and I eat healthy everyday and apparently I am overweight because I weigh more than 164lbs. The last time I got even close to that, I looked like a drowned rat. I am not fat regardless of what that BMI tells us. I think last time I was checked at 180lbs I had 10-13% body fat. Which is pretty low. There has got to be a better way to calculate when a person is a body builder or lifter....or else everyone that works out and has muscle will be overweight. Hell, when I was 167, (still overwieght) I lost so much muscle mass it was ridiculous. I think their system is flawed at best!!!

Personally any Woman should have a little fluff to them. Who wants to see ribs sticking out and hips that could put an eye out.

    • Posted By: Bing @ 12/09/2007 1:14:05 AM

Very good comment Tyzlea/Jean. I think that most of the obese women posting here who say they barely eat anything are forgetting to mention just how much they drink! Of soda, I mean. I find it amazing that people will pay double or triple or more for a soda when they could just drink water, which is what their bodies really want. Stop drinking soda. Stop eating pastries for breakfast, or ever - that's not food. Stop eating cake for dessert for lunch - in fact, stop eating dessert. Do you really need 12 ounces of sugar in your body per day. Very good points, Jean. People need to stop eating SUGAR and refined carbohydrates. Those are the biggest culprits of the fat epidemic.

  • Posted By: tat2dteacher @ 12/09/2007 1:11:46 AM

This is to everyone complaining about the skinny people that can eat whatever they want without gaining weight:
#1 Those people may still have health problems stemming from their diets. i.e. high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cirrhosis (heavy drinkers), etc.

#2 Whoever said life is fair? Complaining about the people that can eat whatever they want won't change the fact that you are overweight. Stop pointing fingers and take responsibility for yourself.

I know it sucks. But that's the way it is. For anyone living in CO, WY, or ID, I have 3 words for you: Good Times Spoonbender. My biggest weakness. But as one of the hated "skinnies," I would like to say that I come from a very large (pardon the pun) extended family - 30+ strong, and 80% of them are overweight. So to me, THAT is my motivation for making my health and well-being a priority, and I work hard every day because I know that the same potential for being overweight is in MY genes, too. I just refuse to give in to it, and I give everything I have in my daily battle that makes me a member of the brother and sisterhood of iron.

  • Posted By: marks76 @ 12/09/2007 1:01:43 AM

If you ask me the american idea of thin (ribs showing and sharp hips) needs to be re-evaluated. A little extra fluff is by far more healthy and desireable

    • Posted By: Bing @ 12/09/2007 1:10:01 AM

There's no arguing with taste. But big fat pudgy women are disgusting, no question. People who are attracted to that are perverts.

  • Posted By: melodyknows @ 12/09/2007 12:45:51 AM

Everyone I know who is overweight claims that it's the way "God made them." And, that they are completely healthy and normal. But, they aren't. They are gorging on food. This girl who claims to eat 800 calories a day is completely full of it. She might eat 800 calorie food items, but I'm sure it's been deep fried, covered in butter and cream, and then served with a side of cheese. I mean-- come on people. Exercise. Get off your butts. Stop eating fast food. Stop being lazy. Lose the weight before you end up like my grandfather-- so overweight and defeated by diabetes that they are going to have to cut his legs off. It's not healthy to be overweight. There is no such thing as fit and fat. The fact is, people who are overweight are less productive and more likely to die at an earlier age. Being proud of being fat is just ignorant.

    • Posted By: Bing @ 12/09/2007 1:06:08 AM

melodyknows, you are exactly right. I find it amazing that every fat person I meet on the street will tell me they just have a slow metabolism and that they eat the same, OR LESS, than all their skinny friends. Then, when I'm at a restaurant, I see the fattest people ALWAYS eating the most food, moderately fat people eating a little less, and skinny people eating the least. You are fat because you are gluttons. Quit eating so much, get off your butts and get some excercise, and you will lose weight. And most importantly, quit feeding your CHILDREN ice cream every day. It's absolutely disgusting to see fat (or not fat) parents ruining their children's lives like that.

  • Posted By: spudwack123 @ 12/09/2007 1:04:14 AM

Genetics surely plays a role in many, many people's weight problems. However, severely overweight people suffer from a mixture of poor, excessive diets and little exercise. The problem is multifaceted. I give props to someone who tries hard and is not slender, but I do not care for those who use genetics as an excuse to be over 300 lb. I don't care who you are, being over 300 lb is a problem based on choice. If you weigh 300 + you eat more than I do ??? there is just no question about it.eateat more than I do.

  • Posted By: Tyleza @ 12/09/2007 1:01:36 AM

I'm finally at the "normal weight" after being obese for the past 10 years (since my daughters' births). I accomplished my goal by changing how I eat. It took me 3 months to lose the first 13 lbs. Then I plateaued for about 4 months. Then I lost the remainder.

I don't 'diet'; I eat 'whole foods' instead of 'processed foods'. I eliminated trans fats (hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils) and eliminated high fructose corn syrup. Additionally I eliminated pork, and reduced my beef and chicken consumption to once or twice a month. I load up on fish (salmon, sea bass, tilapia and grouper are my favorites). I also snack on vegetables and fruits. The other thing I did was to take "white" out of my food and replace it with 'brown' (brown rice, brown sugar, honey, whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta, etc).

If you really want to focus on health, eliminate TRANS FATS and HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. Research how horrible those are for us. How trans fats increases not only weight, but also significantly increases our chance for heart disease, cancer etc.

Good Luck and Good Health Everyone,
    ~Jeanne

Now, I am not one of the lucky gene pool lottery winners, so I have what thin people consider a "problem". As one posted here, he thinks 5'2 and 120 is on the "thick" side. I would suggest this man seriously get some help-- that is not "thick" at all! Maybe it is time Americans started seriously looking at what is considered "healthy". I am overweight, but, I am healthy. Please do not judge those who are not "rails". Do not automatically assume obesity is preventable or the obese person is simply lazy-- this is not true at all. Quit judging something you have never experienced. One can study obesity all they want, but, until they have walked a mile in my shoes, do not presume to know what is causing it and how I can prevent it. I have tried all the "experts" ways. I am still obese. I have had all tests done and there is not one thing wrong with me physically. I eat 800 calories per day-- (food is expensive). It takes 900 calories a day just to sustain life. I am currently and have been under a doctors supervision for my weight for over 3 years and he montors my intake so my average caloric intake is accurate. He has no answers for me and neither does anyone else. So, I hope this adds a perspective to this side of the story for you. Thank you for letting me have my say.

    • Posted By: tat2dteacher @ 12/09/2007 1:00:27 AM

As a nurse, you should know that by definiton, the fact that you are overweight means you are unhealthy. I, too realize food is expensive. Do you know how hard it is to maintain a bodybuilder's diet on a college student's income? But think of how much it is going to cost you in the long run in terms of health care if you don't make your health a priority now, BEFORE you develop the health risks that accompany excessive weight. Furthermore, as far as your time limitations in your day - you got there because of decisions YOU made with your life. Accept them, own up to them, then, if your health truly is a priority, make the changes you may have to face to get there. No one says it is going to be easy. But I am saying it is worth it.
