Nevermind the rampant sexism in the military. 1 in 3 female recruits will be raped while serving their country, by another countryman. Sexism is deeply embedded in military culture. Military life demands unquestioning obedience to superior officers who are overwhelmingly men, which reinforces time and time again the inferior place of women. Male soldiers are exposed to and become part of a way of life that constantly sexualizes and devalues women. It is an extreme, concentrated expression of the sexism underlying capitalist society generally.

For most women in the military, the torrent of sexual harassment starts in the academy. Female cadets are often treated with open hostility, enduring unwelcome sexual advances and repeated incidents of hazing. Some hazings are extreme and even life-threatening, including reports of women having their clothes set on fire.

I am a Sgt. in the U.S. Marines and I personally appreciate what she is doing the same way I do every other service member. What she does in the military far outweighs the Miss America run. On the flip side, there will be a lot of women that will now consider the military when they didn't before because she is a role model for them now. I am proud of her. Semper Fi. Sgt. Cowan

Ten-Hut? I'm not in the military but even my 5 years in marching band gives me reason to agree with soldierx20 and spiders. Lets get it right Newsweek! Also, as a women I am proud of, Stevens. It is good for publicity and it is good that people are finally realizing women can "multi task". Obviously, she is the symbol for a true American women. As for the NFS thing. If they can't do it around her they shouldn't at all!

It's wonderful that she will be able to show young women and girls that they can be both strong and beautiful and not just full of fluff. Go Jill!! I hope you win!

Jill you are a better morale booster for the troops than any USO show. Good luck. Remember to show up in uniform for a photo op.........

Interesting comments. Congratulations to Jill. As for the rank most of us got promoted but we still look back on the pictures of the important things that happened during our tours. This is what shaped the way we think and act today. Thanks for publishing this story. CWO4 Retired Army

HOOAH! SGT STEVENS. FYI - The Army also has Squadrons. We have ground cavalry squadrons and air cavalry squadrons. An example is the 3rd ACR - Armored Cavalry Regiment, which has 3 cavalry squadrons and a support squadron, Additionally quite a few of our Apache AH-64D and OH-58D rotary wing (helicopters) are in units called squadrons. An example is the 6th Air Cavalry Brigade, which has several squadrons like the 1 / 6th Air Cav Sqdrn. "Brave Rifles"

There are many types of contests that judge one specific area of an individual's gifts - spelling bees, chili cook-offs, chess tournaments, bowling tournaments, etc, etc. These contests simply judge one aspect of a person's total being. They do not assess other aspects of that person. Because someone has the gift of beauty, that does not make it demeaning to compete in that area. If you choose to see this as shallow that is your problem, and I would suggest it is out of envy to intimate such a thing. It is a much more mature position to see that all individuals have different gifts, and it is not demeaning to complete in a contest that emphasizes that gift.

Dude, Which cannel carries that show you mentioned?

For the evening gown competition, Sgt. Stevens should wear regulation U.S. Army formal wear with medals. The Army's formal uniform for women is not very sexy, but it would state an incredbile message of who she is and what she stands for.

You idea is OK, but I say she just wear the head gear when competing in the swinsuit competition. Wow, what a sight for the troops to see.
