Female soldiers serving in Iraq have reported high rates of sexual assault and rape from fellow soldiers and superiors. To avoid sexual assault, women are starting to use the "buddy system." They stay armed and in pairs at all times, even when going to the bathroom, out of fear of being raped. Though grossly underreported, it is estimated that as many as 30% of female soldiers experience an attempted or completed rape.

With all due respect Grandpa, what does that have to do with GI Jill and the Miss America pageant???? You have a problem with the US Military, fine. Take it somewhere else. Perhaps you didn't notice, but the article was about one woman's service and choice to compete in a pageant. If all your stats were true (which they may have been year ago), that would make her accomplishments all the greater!!!! Just drink your warm milk, lean back in the recliner, and enjoy the show.
P.S. No offense to your son, but I wonder if the story of the "die raghead, etc" is even true. How did you raise a son willing to join the military??? And why would it be shocking that they would say something like that while teaching soldiers how to defend themselves in combat against individuals that fit that stereotype? Seems to me you wouldn't want the expression to be something else, like "Thank you, come again" would you????

It is quite nice hearing about a (former) service member ("quote end quote") achieving the transition from military to civilian life. Doing so is not easy. And talk about community service, how much more service can one do than put your life on the line for others (some of whom you do NOT know)? I may be a female, still Jill Stevens has my backing. Good Job!

What I would like to know is how in the hell is this soldier, this woman, entering a beauty pageant going to bring about the end of civilization? If all this is is a stupid pageant what do you people railing against it care? All of you feminists, arent you the same ones that were shouting about what Clinton did in his own time was his business and none of ours? What this woman does on her own time is none of our business, but becasue it is in such a public forum those of us that choose to will be supporting her!

And santaclaus, you have used the terms logical fallicy in a sentence. I guess the word of the day toilet paper has finally paid for itself!

As a former Medic with the U S Army, and though I am a male, I say it is about time these Military members get recognized, for more than being Soldiers. They place their lives in harms way, to protect America, working with wounded soldiers, and people hurt by a war, in distant countries.

I've stated my points and my job here is done, MSN has removed this story from their front page.
    To summarize:
Nevermind the rampant sexism in the military. 1 in 3 female recruits will be raped while serving their country, by another countryman. Sexism is deeply embedded in military culture. Military life demands unquestioning obedience to superior officers who are overwhelmingly men, which reinforces time and time again the inferior place of women. Male soldiers are exposed to and become part of a way of life that constantly sexualizes and devalues women. It is an extreme, concentrated expression of the sexism underlying capitalist society generally.

For most women in the military, the torrent of sexual harassment starts in the academy. Female cadets are often treated with open hostility, enduring unwelcome sexual advances and repeated incidents of hazing. Some hazings are extreme and even life-threatening, including reports of women having their clothes set on fire.
"The Sexual Harassment of Female Active-Duty Personnel," H. Antecol and D.A. Cobb-Clark, ideas.repec.org/p/clm/clmeco/2001-27.html
"Sexual Harassment: Open Season on Working Women," B. Corbin and L. Bennett-Haigney, www.now.org/nnt/03-97/sexual.html#military
"Researchers study women's risk of rape in military," March 2003,
    The New Standard, 6/16/2004

Another clever recruiting campaign. Female recruitment rate is down...let's show a pretty woman in a contest to be pretty. It's not enough that she's an accomplised medical worker.

I think it is awesome that she is competing in the Miss America. Good luck to you. I want to watch the pagent now just to see how you do!

As to the person that made the comment about how at pagents you can't be married etc. Have you not ever heard of the Mrs. America pagent. It is a pagent for married women and women that have kids. My aunt has competed in the Mrs. NC competition. They do exsist maybe you should check into something before you write it down.

But anyways back onto the topic of the article. I myself am a female in the military I am currently going through the SROTC program and I think it is awesome that she is doing this. It shows people that you don't have to be the "barbie doll" to do stuff like this. And I also think it is a great thing that she was thought so "highly" of by her fellow "battle buddies" that just show what type of person she is. Which I think is a very important thing.

And your sure of this? Because my son became a conscientious objector to the Iraqi war after being trained on how to properly shoot a 50 cal. w/o it over heating. The training consisted of this: When squeezing the trigger say a phrase to remind yourself to let off. The phrase was "die *** raghead die". Squeeze the trigger. say "die raghead die". let off the trigger.

Ah HA! Now we know what's your SAD story is... your son fall by the waist side and you got to blame the Army for his weakness... But think about this.... If he could NOT perform a simple task under training condition what do you think he'll do under real life and dead situation? His inability to perform a task not only put himself in danger but also the life of his fellow soldiers too... Boy! I'd love to send both of you downrange....

It is nice to see that there is a woman who can be looked at so positively. Here we have a woman who has graduated high school and while there decided to join the military. She then went to war and was an inspiration to those that were there with her. She then came back (finished or recieved) a college degree in nursing. (which mind you is a resource this country is dire need of) And decided that in all her spare time would go ahead and run for Miss America. Let me just say that she is an inspiration. Here we have a woman who can be looked up to by children, youth, and grown adults. She stands there, showing that we can do anything we want to male and females. When there seems to be limitations standing in front of us, we can put a positive light on it, and be an example for others. By keeping a positive attitude, being courageous and keeping a kind spirit we can all make this country what is truly supposed to be. My America!

Congratulations Sgt. Stevens! You are an inspiration that I and others are able to look to! Best of luck! Whether you win or lose you, you are a role model for so many. Thank you for your service! I appreciate what you have done and what you continue to do! God Bless!

It's fun to see someone who fell down the stairs at Miss Utah (in her evening gown) end up winning and go on to the Miss America Pageant. But I do have to think that perhaps one of the only reasons 'Miss Jill' made it as far as she did is because she is capitalizing on her time spent in the national guard. If she does win, I am afraid it will only be because she has the best 'sob story' of the year. However, I do think she has done and will go on to do really good things for the causes she believes in. It just turns me off that she is exploiting her service so publically. What about the other girls from the other 50 states? Could we hear about them? (Perhaps I am just sick and tired of hearing about the war we're in currently. I am a wife of a army veteran who spent much more time over in Iraq than 'Miss Jill'...)

um yeah you spent much more time in iraq doing....what? being the WIFE of a soldier and BEING a soldier are two different things.

Grandpa Cory you are ignorant of the facts, as simple as that. The researchers that you reference obviously need to manufacture sensational statistics in order to qualify for the next round of government academic handouts.
I have been in the military for the last 17 years. Anecdotally I would have to assert that it is a most level professional playing field for both women and minorities.

On another note, those of you who feel that beauty pageants somehow exploit women by propagating an antiquated negative stereotype, I hold pity for your souls. You have unfortunately sold them to the Satan of political correctness.
The new stereotypes that many of you openly advocate directly contribute to the barbaric behavior we hear about on the evening news and tragically experience first hand in the streets of our once proud nation.

Hats off to this outstanding citizen!

        Grandpa Cory
Anecdotally??? I am very sure of it. Maybe you should look up the meaning of the word anecdotally.

I am so sorry that you and your son were confused about what it meant to be in the military. We kill people, fact! It???s not pretty (but very necessary). Anger and hate can be expeditors to that end.

However that doesn't address sexual nor racial discrimination. We do discriminate against the enemy, by killing them if necessary.

If you have a beef with the military because of the nature of the work we do then comment on that. If your comment was ???---the military kills people in hateful, terrible ways, on a scale never seen in our history before, this is a awful thing and it makes me sick and frightens me---??? I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly. It is unfortunately necessary; else somebody else kills us first.
I support your son???s right to conscientious object, ironically it is the very same military that you are attempting to smear that enforces the regulations guaranteeing his right to do so.
Please don???t use lies and dubious rhetoric to support your emotional stance. Be a man and state what you don???t like clearly so that others may benefit from your conversation.

      • Posted By: stumpy_c @ 12/06/2007 3:52:48 PM

Any rational person can differentiate between your example (in context) and internal, institutional discrimination against women or minorities. Key word being rational. I also wonder just what your son thought he was going to be doing when he joined the military...sitting down for tea and cakes with the enemy? War is ugly, filthy business. I don't know why he was surprised that the thinking and mindset that goes along with it is any different.

I won't argue that there aren't soldiers in the military who think that women should not be there (I was one of them), but in terms of equal pay, promotion, duty assignment, nobody is going to convince me that it is a major issue.

I was fortunate to meet and work for a short period of time with Sgt Stevens whille in Bagram, Afghanistan in 2004. I am so elated to see such a fine lady with her accomplishments, spirit, humility, and achievements getting press in our days of so much negativity. Jill was an energetic and selfless contributor whenever I saw her, stepping out of her own initiative to make others smile and feel important and appreciated. The unit she was a part of contributed countless hours, dollars and efforts to spread care, compassion and help wherever they went when off-duty, and Jill was a major player in those ambassadorial and compassionate missions. Jill does not need to win this pageant to establish herself - anyone who knows or learns of her spirit, personality, achievements and grace and selflessness cannot be but favorably impressed and understand that her participation is a positive moment. She does not need celebrating, but we can laud and celebrate her accomplishments, service, virtuous achievements and good efforts as things which are more appealing as a measure of success than so many other role models elevated in our society. I smile when I recall Sgt Stevens once donning a homemade or self-fashioned red nose to wear while greeting people attending a meeting at the Bagram base chapel, just because she wanted to make people smile as she welcomed them at the door. The picture I took will remain in my keeping as a fond memory. Best wishes always Jill, to you and all who serve(d) there fellow man.

I would also like to add... I am the daughter of a retired Air Force MSGT, the sister of a Tsgt, the fiance of a TSGT and the ex wife of a former SSgt. I work on a military installation. I think it is wonderful that she is able to do both.. She is also not the only one in the military carrying a title. Miss Arkansas is also Active duty. These women are amazing. I don't know them personally, but I would be proud to. almost as proud as I am of the Military people in my life.
    WAY TO GO!!

indysaint you have issues. First you state that one of our soldiers looks like they got hit with shrap metal, then you indicate she is unpleasant looking while in the same breath condeming the pageant for being about someone being pretty. Why don't you post a picture of yourself here and while your at it give us all an indication of what you have done for your country, or even your neighbor!!

Stantheman, My daugther is not from an economically depressed part of the country for whom joining the army was the best career move. She truly wanted to serve her country and be apart of a great bunch of human beings. Stantheman you are no man and you say things that you don't have a clue about. I'm sure there are some people that saw it as a way to get an education that they otherwise could not afford. But they are doing it in a positive way and not standing around with their hand out expecting someone to pay their way, they are working for their education. For those who had that reason there is doing wrong with it. At least you didn't decide to hell with life and join the life of crime department

    • Posted By: Stantheman @ 12/06/2007 4:29:38 PM

I didn't say it was true for all military people (that service is their only option) but is a fact that it is young people from lower socioeconomic classes who do most of the dying in the nation's wars. This is unjust. Good for your daughter. I do not disagree with your last four sentences. I'm not sure how you make out that I have no clue - please be specific. I will let pass your comment about my not being a man as I am secure in my masculinity.

She is a breath of fresh air... It takes a very special person to turn a negative into a positive.. and with all the BS that is going on with the pagents these days and the war in Iraq.. she made a positive out of both!!
I HOPE YOU TAKE THE CROWN WHILE WEARING YOUR BDU'S!!!!!!
