Mamedic - you are a doctor AND a paramedic? Like physician, MD? This seems kinda weird.

As for what the country would be like without the military - it would probably be much the same as it is, maybe a little more mellow and with more money to spend on schools and health care etc. The US hasn't exactly been fending off invasions in the last couple of hundred years.

I'm neither. But could he be a doctor and a volunteer ambulance "attendant

I am not sure what you called 9/11. You obviously have no respect for the supreme sacrifice the military personnel have given for this country. I think you are very naive when you say our country would be much the same . Have you forgotten Hilter and Japan's quest to dominate the world? Shame on your disrespect to our WWII heroes.

Good luck Jill. I don't know you personally but it would be an honor to have someone like you representing the USA. I live in a military community and I appreciate what you do for us to help protect us and allow us to have our freedom. Our country would be much better off if there were more of your type representing us. You are in my prayers! Loretta - Kingsland, Georgia

As a female AF Academy grad from 2001, I have to say to grandpa cory that you don't know what you're talking about. Yes, I've heard the news stories, but my fellow Academy grads are overwhelmingly high-caliber individuals of high moral fiber. My time in the Air Force has been very rewarding. Your comments are uneducated and unhelpful.

    • Posted By: grandpa cory @ 12/06/2007 3:44:10 PM

It's even harder to wage war on a noun

      • Posted By: river_city @ 12/06/2007 3:51:28 PM

Cory are you aware a noun is a person, place, or thing? therefor it really is the only thing to wage war on. you can't wage war on a tactic, adjective, or verb so why don't you go talk to yoru old english techer again and leave the rest of us alone for a while.

      • Posted By: mike201057 @ 12/06/2007 3:50:26 PM

I would also mention that as an NCO in the Kentucky Army National Guard and a veteran of 4 deployments with #5(my 3rd in Iraq)soon upon me theres something needed to be said pertaining to woman and their rights in the military. As a member of the Military Police its not just our job to prevent incidents from happening but to react(with speed)to any that may happen within the Army community. The military as a whole is nothing more than a smaller reflection of our society in general,we have crimes committed on posts the same as all communities only at a lower rate. Trust me when I say that the Army(and overall military) takes EVERY commited incident seriously and sexual harrassment is NOT tolerated at ANY level......PERIOD. The Army highly stresses the impotantance of respecting their fellow soldiers regardless of gender and when the bounderies of respect are crossed its EVERY soldiers duty(regardless of rank or gender)to address the situation, make an on the spot correction and dress the(wrongful)soldier down as expected.
As an MP(which actually stands for Multi Purpose)I've personally made such "on the spot corrections" of both men AND woman in uniform from verbally reminding them of the Army policy to demanding their units chain of command and informing them of their soldiers behavior. If that sounds strict it IS because it SHOULD be and imagine the military actually takes such incidents more seriously than those in the civilian sector. As an Army EOR(Equal Opportunity Representative)I've witnessed first hand how serious the Army takes such incidents as sexual harrassment,racial/religious discrimination and creating a hostile work environment with promotions overlooked, losing rank, lost financial wages and careers sidetracked to actual confinement and withdrawn from further military service based on the
severity. It should be noted that the U.S. Army and all other military branches highly discourage ANY acts of sexual harrassment towards members of the armed forces and that personel that do decide to break the laws/customs are dealt with swiftly and by the UCMJ(Uniform Code of Military Justice)of their particular military branch.

How refreshing! We will be pulling for Jill here in New Orleans. There could not be a better representative of women and soldiers. Good luck!

To a_perfect10: I think your identifier says a lot about you, and explains why you look down your nose at someone who has apparently accompoished what you're only dreamed of. Her's is not a "sob story", simply the story of a young woman determined to live her life to the fullest. Maybe she spent less time then your husband, but how much time did you spend? Just what did you contribute besides a mountain of self pity? Your comments actually sound as if you think she should not have been allowed to compete because she was in the military. This pagent is about choosing a young woman who will represent America, and Jill Stevens does, in the very best way. Why don't you reread your comments, and think about how you would feel if you were the one under discussion. You tried to make it look like you were not criticizing, but it dripped sarcasm and envy.

I serve my country everyday by working with state legislature to pass laws that keep us free. I also worked to serve my country during college, traveling the world as an ambassador for the U.S. I am not saying that she should not become Miss America. I am stating a trend that has plagued the pageant since it's beginnings. But I agree with statements made earlier - controvery draws ratings...plain and simple.

Nevermind the rampant sexism in the military. 1 in 3 female recruits will be raped while serving their country, by another countryman. Sexism is deeply embedded in military culture. Military life demands unquestioning obedience to superior officers who are overwhelmingly men, which reinforces time and time again the inferior place of women. Male soldiers are exposed to and become part of a way of life that constantly sexualizes and devalues women. It is an extreme, concentrated expression of the sexism underlying capitalist society generally.

For most women in the military, the torrent of sexual harassment starts in the academy. Female cadets are often treated with open hostility, enduring unwelcome sexual advances and repeated incidents of hazing. Some hazings are extreme and even life-threatening, including reports of women having their clothes set on fire.

Grandpa-doesn't that make her all the stronger

    • Posted By: balfourjl @ 12/06/2007 3:10:21 PM

I am a veteran of 5 combat tours, have been in the Army for 18 years and yes am a female that has served in Desert Shield/Storm, Bosnia x 2, Kosovo and now Iraq. I do agree that when I first joined and deployed to the desert the sexism back then was very different than now. Does harrassment exist, yes, but one thing you did leave out is that their are more military women in leadership positions and that harrassment can work both ways. As a female, I have been tormented with harrassment. I have also been unwaveringly supported by my fellow male soldiers as well. The difference mainly is that the support during this war was much stronger than in past deployments. We are learning and growing as a force and that is the most important thing. The comments of grandpa cory sound outdated or he hasn't served closely with a unit that's ratio of women to men has increased.

Granpa Cory, reference your facts to these allegations. Anyone can quote statistics. Without facts and documentation to back them up, they are just meaningless numbers.

In Israel every young person, unless going to college, goes to the military. The young men serve 3 years and the young women 2. Is that such a bad thing?? The crime rate in Israel is practically non-existant.

Girlfriend You Go for IT!!!! who cares whether you wore polish or walked in heels, that is soooooooooooooo shallow, You put your self in harms way went to war helped the wounded showed Love and compassion to others, Your the one I want for a role model for my Granddaughters!! GOD BLESS YOU and Thank You from the bottom of my Heart for going to war for me..

  • Posted By: indysaint @ 12/06/2007 3:38:18 PM

Miss America is a contest for one women to try to prove she is prettier then anothe women.
Shallow shallow shallow. And this unpleasant looking soldier should be ashamed that she is fighting for the freedom to come home and involve herself in such a low class activity.

    • Posted By: river_city @ 12/06/2007 3:45:23 PM

you obviously have never actually paid attention to a competiotion in your life other than to rant about the woman being pretty. get over your self because the people in these competitions have to do a lot more than just look good. granted it is called a beauty pagent and the main requirment is to be pretty to look at, but after all is said and done if you are a complete air head and can't answer the questions, if you have no talent, or if the judges deem you so repulsivly rude or uncooth, then no you don't win. Miss America is about a role model not a model so stop trying to fight for a cause that you don't even know the fact about.

Your comment that the military does not get involved in activities of this nature blows my mind. The US Army is sponsoring several motorsport teams in the tunes of millions of dollars a year to a limited few high profile people that have recognition in differnet areas, These funds should be helping those returning from war with tremendous loss of either life or limbs and there families. As we know the world is changing and those in power dictate policy and effect all those less prosperest in financial positions. Our education system is broken and the accountability of funds from the government and major corporations sources are ruining the every day life of our ordinary citizen..
Let us take care of those who take care of us and then look at hose requiring assistance. Please help those that have given life first before profits and policies to independent gain. Thanks for listening
Just Common Sense and not power.

I am the wife of a marine, the sister of a marine, the sister of the air force and the daugter of a retired Air Force. I don't understand how anyone can sit back and try to criticise all of the war stuff that is going on withour looking at the players first! When my family sat down for Thanksgiving, we weren't happy that most of my family was going to have to go back to war zones in 08, but we support each other and their fellow troops. To the dad that has posted about his son learning to shoot- thank you. to the "perfect 10" what if your husband came home with PTSD like mine did? (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) I wish everyone would get off their high horse and simply support the troops! Some of these troops are like my family and they see their fathers doing armed forces, so that's what they want to do when they grow up becaus they were raised with the fatherly figure immage in their heads.I don't care if they spent an hour or a year fighting, they all are affected and they all deserve our grattitude and praise... and if G.I.Jill wins? awesome. Just let it happen, and if you don't like it? run for president and try to change it, or keep your mouth shut unless you have something nice to say!!... we already have a bunch of candidates this year, what's one more gonna hurt?

I am a fellow Southern Utah University student and have had classe with Jill. We are proud to see Jill as Miss Utah. She is a great person, she is very selfless and will do anything to help any one. I had a couple of classes with Jill and she was always willing to help any one in need. She made the worst professor's class on campus fun! She turned the self proclamed A-hole in to a great guy that semester. GO JILL YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Posted By: S2Mc @ 12/06/2007 3:39:40 PM

I too was fortunate to meet and see Jill's personality in person. I was in Afghanistan when she served there and she was always cheerful and looking out for things she could do to make others smile. I was so wonderfully surprised when here in Iraq I saw her on the FoxNews or CNN channel when she won her state crown. Jill does not need to win this pageant to prove anything - she is solidly grounded and goal oriented and successful, all on top of or in addition to being a warm, compassionate, fun, inspiring and classy lady. I wil always remember the red rubber nose she donned just to make people laugh as she stood out front warmly greeting people on their way into a meeting one day at the Bagram base chapel. No, I won't publish the picture, Jill! Best wishes - SCM
