I am a retired Army Nurse Officer who came up through the ranks in the Naval Service as a Hospital Corpsman NCO. I served with many women over the years and a very special group of women in Viet Nam during 1968. I am of the impression that this young lady has completed Nursing Education and will now join the Army Nurse Corps (at some time) and I wish her aall the very best. I am proud of her and what she has accomplished. Go for it.

Grandpa Cory you are ignorant, as simple as that. The researchers that you reference obviously need to manufacture sensational statistics in order to qualify for the next round of government academic handouts.
I have been in the military for the last 17 years. Anecdotally I would have to assert that it is a most level professional playing field for both women and minorities.

On another note, those of you who feel that beauty pageants somehow exploit women by propagating an antiquated negative stereotype, I hold pity for your souls. You have unfortunately sold them to the Satan of political correctness.
The new stereotypes that many of you openly advocate directly contribute to the barbaric behavior we hear about on the evening news and tragically experience first hand in the streets of our once proud nation.
Hats off to this outstanding citizen.

Wow! You go Sgt. Stevens...You've got an awesome gig...And what a healthy and inspirational role model to young women...if I was younger, I'd want to be you :) Good Luck.

As a retired Air Force Sergeant, I have to say I'm so proud of what Sgt. Stevens has accomplished, in both the military and civilian arenas. She is indeed a role model to young women everywhere, and what I consider to be the ultimate American woman. She's a lady, a soldier, and a strong woman. As far as I'm concerned, she's already won in the game of life, the Miss American crown would just be additional frosting to an already completed masterpiece.

Just so all of you know, I went to school with Jill. I was in classes with her. She did not do pagents to promote the Army! She did it because a friend and the paget director talked her in to it. The whole army aspect of it did not take part until months after she was miss Utah!

I was going to comment on the idiotic ramblings of an uneducated, foolish retard, but you all have apparently taken care of that. Now, what can we do to take care of the people like Gingerz, who think EVERYTHING about the military is a conspiracy by the governement involving the war??????

Grandpa Cory needs to pull his head out of his 4th point of contact and quit raining on Ms. Stevens parade. She is a wonderful human being and a beautiful person....and Cory is just a bitter old man with an axe to grind....witness his sources, "The New Standard?" Now there's an unbiased rag for you. I've been working with women in the military for over 30 years, and like AIRASLT said, whenever there was an impropriety, and that was very rare in my experience, it was adjudicated quickly and honorably. Ms. Stevens needs to be recognized for her service to our country, and her representation for the state of Utah. What windbags like Cory are saying have absolutely nothing to do with her or her accomplishments in the service of her nation. Cory, you should be ashamed of yourself. Take your bitterness somewhere else.

Devilgato r"Ms. Stevens needs to be recognized for her service to our country, and her representation for the state of Utah." So why isn't the story about her intelligence and current accomplishments? Why write a story on a beauty pageant?

For the ARMY, it's "ATTENTION!" - NOT "Ten Hut". Do some research before you write some other stupid phrase that doesn't match the branch.

      "tmms"
      IT IS THE SAME!

God Bless you and Go For It!!I love the fact that a soldier can accomplish more things in lifeDon't let anyone tell you you can't do it.My family has served in every war since the American Revolution > My son is a decorated Desert Storm Veteran, My nephew is in Iraq right now.We all say God Bless Yoy SGT Stephens.

The study that was referenced by Grandpa Cory was conducted before the Iraq War began (March 17, 2003). So I'm not sure from where those coments come. The researchers interviewed a nationwide sample of 556 female veterans who served in the Vietnam, post-Vietnam and Persian Gulf War eras. Additionally, it should be noted that the referenced study also concluded "Our findings were consistent with research in civilian populations demonstrating that younger women entering male-dominated work groups at lower levels of authority are those most likely to be harassed," Anne Sadler, Ph.D. I think what Sgt. Stevens is doing is a great moral booster. Drive on Sgt. Stevens, drive on!

Ok so is she Army or Air Force? It mentions her being in the army, but the mixed messages I get are the DCU's(desert combat uniform) that she is wearing. The Air Force wears that camo sceme, the Army doesn't anymore. And also in the caption under her photo. It says that the towns were adopted by her squadron, which is also an Air Force term.

Besides the Airforce, the Army, and the Marine Corps have squadrons because I have been in both branches of service. I am unsure about the Navy, but I think they have squadrons too.

HOOAH! SGT STEVENS. FYI - The Army also has Squadrons. We have ground cavalry squadrons and air cavalry squadrons. An example is the 3rd ACR - Armored Cavalry Regiment, which has 3 cavalry squadrons and a support squadron, Additionally quite a few of our Apache AH-64D and OH-58D rotary wing (helicopters) are in units called squadrons. An example is the 6th Air Cavalry Brigade, which has several squadrons like the 1 / 6th Air Cav Sqdrn. "Brave Rifles"

Spc. Jill Stevens congradulations and I hope you make it all the way. That should be what Miss America is all about a woman who has served her country and even went to war. Not about how well you look in a evening gown or swimsuit. As a proud mother of a daughter serving in South Korea in the Army Military Police I feel all woman who serve there country are Miss or Mrs. Americas for the job they are doing. (Guys you are the Mr. Americas) All of you true heros.
I will be watching and cheering for you to bad it isn't truly Americas vote.
As for Grandpa Cory the wrong doing of some does not mean its true for all. My daugther hasn't had one bad thing to said about any male or any wrong doing. She has told me that they treat her with just as much respect as they do the other males. So don't lump what some do in with all military.

Thank you Ms.Fantin. Good luck Sgt.Stevens,
America needs more woman of your caliber, Sgt.Stevens.
We all love a winner, and that is you young lady.
Thank you for coming into our lives.

I think it is fabulous that she has become a "miss state" and is in the running for miss america, as well as serving in the military. I have always believed that every american should serve their country. As far as grandpa jackass, um i mean corey, and gingerz, goes, please keep your your under informed and ridiculously silly ideas to yourself, or at least research your ideas before you post them.

I am so proud of Sgt Stevens. I am a 19 year old female soldier currently deployed in Iraq. She helped me realize, my dreams can come true. With her courage she has taught me to become a better soldier, and I don't even know her, talk about a great NCO! Thank you Sgt Stevens for being a wonderful role model.
