This was both a groveling and scary speech. According to Romney and the evangelicals he so desperately courts, the only acceptable candidates are those who believe in Jesus Christ and the apocalypse? Do they want an official state religion, or a theocracy like Iran? Their blatent and wilfull ignorance of what the founding fathers meant by religious freedom is a threat to our democracy. There was a point in our history when being a baptist in Virginia got one burned at the stake, so our evangelical friends need to hit the pause button and stay out of other people's personal religious choices, or lack thereof.

I can't beieve some peoples reactions to Romney's adress. It wasn't aimed at being a homey, sit down and talk about how his personal beviefs have shaped his life. It wasn;t intended to be about how his personal beliefs would affect his time in office. He's been having to focus this issue from day one because that's what the press wanted to know. Was he going to bring ideals of the LDS religion into the oval office, and quite frankly he answered the question perfectly. NO, he won't , because of the foundations that this country was built upon. Relgious freedom to worship how, where, or what we may. I think Romney's been so quiet about his personal history where faith is concerned because his faith is something special to him and he doesn't want to give the media something else to ridicule and mock. I wouldn't either quite frankly. I say we focus on the skills a candidate has that qualifys them to lead this nation and not what they do on Sunday. The media should separate church and state and focus on the real issues, such as what are his views on foriegn policy, or what's he going to do to get this nation out of its trillions of dallars of debt that way my kids can have a future. That's what I want to know.

Thank you for proving that no matter what Romney does the mainstream media is going to go after him. The truth is he gave Americans a powerful inspiring speach and as a man of faith stuck by his beliefs. Here is a guy without any scandal that the media is trying to conjure up things as small as the whole gardner incident and his dog on top of his car. You people make me sick

POOR ARTICLE, Whoever states that he failed his speech because he didn't express doctine or lack what he can do for the family or whatever is stupid! DIDN'T YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT HIS SPEECH WAS ABOUT! He said that the church wouldn't interfere period, he believes in christ, we should love our neighbor, and hes shares the same values, AND WE SHOULD NOT REJECT HIM OR ACCEPT HIM B/C OF HIS FAITH!!! To say he needs to talk about family is absord! Look at his family and you'll find the best answer!! Plus he is the main candidate that has continually mentioned the idea of strenghing the our familys and their is nothing better than what happens with in the four walls of the home!!! Be greatful that he was courageous enough to come out and explain himself about faith in america!! I'm a christian, and WE STARTED THIS MESS OF BRINGING UP RELIGION! WE'RE THE ONES FEEDING THE FLAME! Our evangelical society has been intolerant since mormonism began in the 1800's. Our leaders can't get over it and either can we. Let me guess your one of the intolerant KENNETH!! How about becoming better christians and more like christ for once!

How about starting with a little less anger, I am an atheist and should be the one most offended by any religious nonsense that directly and usually adversely affects my life yet even humble me realizes anger is a last resort of a limited mind. A little more practise and a lot less preaching perhaps?

"Romney rooted the speech in the literature of America???s civil religion. When he said "Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom," he was paraphrasing Tocqueville: "Despotism may be able to do without faith, but freedom cannot."

His criticism of "the religion of secularism" recalled a radio address by President Reagan. Banning school prayer, Reagan said "is seen not as the realization of state neutrality, but rather as the establishment of a religion of secularism."

Romney invoked John Kennedy???s famous speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association. He also alluded to other remarks by JFK. "When I place my hand on the Bible and take the oath of office," Romney said, "that oath becomes my highest promise to God." In 1960, Kennedy said that anyone who takes the presidential oath "is swearing to support the separation of church and state." A president who broke that oath, Kennedy said, would be committing a sin ???for he has sworn on the Bible."

Romney said: "Americans acknowledge that liberty is a gift of God, not an indulgence of government." In his inaugural, Kennedy proclaimed that "the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.""

Swearing to uphold the separation of church and state by putting your hand on the bible?...lol

So what hapens and who does he answer to if he doesn't? Am I the only one who sees the contradiction here? Too funny!

The President takes the oath of office......."and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." I thought freedom to practise one's religion is part of the Constitution? Why does Mr. Romney's or any candidates have to defend his/her religion?

  • Posted By: Michael V. @ 12/07/2007 3:21:55 PM

So, as a libertarian who believes firmly in the complete and unambiguous separation (freedom) of state from church, none of these pandering leading politicians will allow me to sit in the big tent with them? And as an atheist, none of these same candidates will uphold my civil rights under the Constitution, as I am so obviously part of this "religion of secularism" that they all seem so eager to denounce?

Again he's speaking out of both sides of his mouth
On one side he says No religious test
Then on the other he's trying to pass the religous right's test
By saying Jesus Christ is my saviour......

azkid, nobody really cares about your boss. he's not going to win the nomination, or if he does it'll be because he was able to pay more money for it. campaign workers shouldn't send comments. nobody but a true believer would have posted that claptrap. How about explaining the Magic Underwear thing?

Newsweek's writers just don't get it. How will his faith inform his presidency? This is how: Romney is an uncommonly decent man who loves his family, and is loved by them, and who believes in the goodness of America and loves this nation and what it stands for--all of which are fruits flowing from his faith. This speech did not fall flat. It merely fell on the deaf ears of a few flat headed writers at Newsweek.

That Romney describes secularism as being a religion marks him as being a very incoherent thinker. One might as well try to claim that anyone who does NOT believe in ghosts, fairies, and leprechauns is being superstitious.
