Interestingly, the US has many more times the guns than Mexico has and nowhere near the murder rate at 21/2 times the population and area.
Although I see this changing in the US, the right of any privilege such as gun ownership requires a mindset for such a responsibility. It must first be taught very early, either thru the schools, parents, neighbors media etc or a combination thereof. Mexicans in general have never been taught in their national history to value life and property in the character of thier beliefs thru Catholicism's history long ago failed them.
So violence with the use of guns to facilitate murder to accomplish selling a product that brings a lot of money has completely corrupted many police departments and even federal agencies. The only reason the Mexican Federal Government is addressing the problem seriously now, is because the elite within the US Government has mandated they address it. After all they chose the same elite that will govern in Mexico. There is no Mexican President that is not chosen in the US first, anymore then the same elite chose the candidates in US long before the election. Thats why nothing changes in either country, the same secret elite control from behind the scenes.
Hence, many think the oil and food crisis is something spontaneous where economics gone awry. There is some very major suffering for citizens of the world including Mexico and the US. It has only just begun.

To "Savant 12/30/2007"- Build a wall? Oh, you poor thing! Let's educate you in current culture and topics of the 21st century. Now, to begin, you might want to step outside your door and take a walk, ride a bus to another town or perhaps take a train to another city. If you look closely, you may find what the US has become: a diverse, booming, influencial and strong nation. I think your mind will become the underdeveloped definition for the word "corrupted" if you don't educate yourself on current events and learn how to adapt to your ever-changing environment: The United States of America. Get used to it!
People who don't thrive and change positively within their environment will likely fall behind much like a Neanderthal who doesn't learn to adapt to living conditions. My suggestion for your concerns: Get out from behind your own "wall of ignorance" and learn to adapt to changes. You'll be a happier person because of it. Happy New Year!

GET A GRIP. iF YOU THINK THAT WE AS AMERICANS CAN JUST ADAPT TO THE INFLUX OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, THEN WHY DON'T YOU MOVE TO MEXICO AND TRY TO ASSIMILATE THERE. BUILD THAT BIG WALL WITH THE DEEPEST MOTE. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT YOU ARE THE UNEDUCATED AND ULTRA LIBERAL NO BRAINERS. BY THE WAY I AM MEXICAN, THE FEW THAT WERE BORN HERE AND EDUCATED TO BOOT. I AM ALSO A VETERAN WHO WOULD DIE FOR YOUR RIGHT TO MAKE ALL THE BLUNDERS YOU WANT. BUT, DON'T SHOVE THAT CRAP DOWN MY THROAT. VIVA GOOD OLD USA.

This goes to Free2beme. You must think that you are something special? Just because you were born here and you are educated. Wow. I'm impressed. You sound like a little man who needs to belittle people in order to feel important. I'm a Latinio from Texas. I feel sorry for you.

FAWNETTE: WHAT???? get a life, the people who built this great nation were not illegals trying to make us speak their language, they were not looking for a place to commit crimes without penalty, they were people who LEARNED our language, obeyed our laws, fought beside us instead of against us in our streets and schools, people who wanted a different and better life, they were and always will be welcome.!! However, illegals who try to make my children speak their language, adapt to their tried and FAILED customs etc. are NOT AND NEVER WIL BE welcome. Yes, lets build a fence, then lets put machiine gun towers along it, comprende? Oh what you don't speak spanish? You will when it is the only language taught in OUR schools.!!!

To reply to "Savant 12/30/2007: Buliding a wall will not solve anything, but it will probably make you more ignorant than you are now. Instead of "a quick fix" like building a wall, understanding that the U.S. as you know it today was built by immigrants and the mix of cultures that will always be present might be your first step. Try going to your local library and read notible publications about our culture...somathing current will do nicely for you.

We are not just like Mexico in just because we have a rap culture here which incites some violence. It is totally different in Mexico. That country is a living definition for the word "corruption". Why does the USA have to be the escape zone for people who are not responsible and courageous enough to improve their own country? They flee to our country and then want to keep the same culture here which is an unmitigated
disaster there. No thanks. Build the wall now.

The Mexican government's failure to get a grip on their drug distribution problems are directly correlated with the never ending violence in that country. The entire government, from the President down to the local Police are corrupted by the insane amounts of money available to look the other way. When a politician decides to take a stand against the cartels, his days are immediately numbered no matter what precautions he takes to protect himself. The Mexican people are powerless to do anything about it, and area forced to keep quiet or risk the consequences. Mexico is a third world country, and this is a graphic reinforcement that we need to put up a wall along the Rio Grande to keep the undesireables out. Guess what, you weren't born here, and you have no claim to our country any more than we want to claim your country. Don't like it over there, do something about it within your own country and keep us out of the equation. Be proud to be Mexican, but at the same time don't despise whites for also being proud of their race. With all the migration north, Whites are slowly but surely becoming the minority in the USA.. Mexicans stay home

I believe that people are losing site of the tragedy in this whole situation. Murder. weapons, drugs and the their aftermath are seen all over the world, not just in Mexico. I am American but of Mexican decent. It sadens me to think that such talented people are being lured into this world of terror. Yes, it is yet another form of terrorism. Mexico isn't the only place in the world were murder is running rampant. I see hatred and anger going on every where on a daily basis all over the world. Mexico is a beautiful country and many people will not see the true Mexico, as a true decendant sees it. The warmth and family values of Mexico and its people and the beauty of the country and its culture.

The cartels of the world, and yes there are cartels all over the world, be it drugs, music industry, politics, religion ... all organizations have the ability to empower greed. Money is truly the root of all evil, it brings power. Money allows people to do whatever they want with no consequences. I have seen it first hand.

I pray for the families of these slain victims of the terrorism going on all over this world. My heart bleeds for this world. Les reso a las familias de los victimas de este mundo. Que dios los vendiga y les guie su entrada al ciello. I am proud to be Mexican and of who I am because of my heritage and I will be until the day I die.

    May God be with you.

Many "Musicians" die in the states in exactly the same manner, Gangs, Drugs, and Guns... That's what the Rap Industry is based on, Isn't it?
There are so many parallels between us and Mexico, Its astonishing... Just like the Rap Culture hold a small percentage of our diverse blend of people, Mexican culture is extremely more diverse and culturally sound than ours. Its so funny we don't like to compare ourselves to them, but our politicians are just the same ... lie, cheat, and steal.

In the article above you have given responsibility to the United States citizens for Mexicans killing Mexicans in Mexico. Where did you get such authority and where did you get your magic wand? "Firearms have never been more plentiful in Mexico, thanks in large part to their ready availability on the U.S. side of the border." Firearms are plentiful in every North and South American country and your pseudo-journalistic license does not give you the right to attribute Mexicans buying guns and killing Mexicans to me and my neighbors. Furthermore, you have no idea where the guns that killed Mexicans murdered in Mexico last year were bought, do you? Careless journalism creates a presumption of knowledge that you may endorse but you do not own.

There is violence everywhere not just in Mexico, we have some of the most crazy killers here in the US. We have kids with access to guns on the web who crazy and shoot their own classmates in highschools and colleges, sniper shooters, serial killers, gangbagers, rapists, we have it all! So don't think that just because you don't visit Mexico that you're safe, not even your kids are safe. We americans are always so quick to point out someone else's mistakes without looking at our own *** first!

Having traveled to Mexico among 24 countries all over the world including Vietnam and Iraq during the war, Mexico is the most dangerous country of any I have visited. Personally it takes a STUPID AMERICAN to go there on vacation.
My wife from South AMerica and I traveled thru Mexico in 2006 by necessity and I was terribly uneasy, simply because at the time Juarez reported nearly 400 female deaths and now they're exhuming 4000 bodies.
My advise to anyone from the US or anywhere is STAY the HELL out of Mexico unless you have a death wish.
At the time my wife bought 12 CDs with various Mexican Singers and out of 60 some songs ALL dealt with killing and being killed!
Maybe its a payback to all these singers that can sing of NOTHING except murder. I personally think they deserve if it, if glorifying MURDER is the TOP selling theme in Mexico. There was a time, Mexicans were great workers, among the must humble in world, kind and gracious. NOW I wouldn't want one living next to me and I'm LATIN!

I think you are being very ignorant. Mexico like any other country can be just as dangerous. dont think you are safe becuase you live in the USA. Crime happends everywhere. its happening right now. I personally think the saftey in the US in overrated. and just so you know Mexico is not as bad as you say!

And for the record, Mexicans are one of the hardest working people. Look at Cesar Chavez, Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa, etc. if you have a personal problem with Mexico tuff deal with it. no one is forcing you to travel there.
once again dont be so St--id saying, "NOW I would'nt want one living next to me"

      Mexican and proud of it!

It's simply naive to think that pharmaceutical drugs are somehow safer than illegal drugs. Thousands die each year as a result of harmful side-effects of legal drugs taken in prescribed amounts.. Hundreds more are killed as a result of being given the wrong drugs by their pharmacist or in a hospital.

So, here's a question: I am being prescribed Marinol (syntheitic THC) at a cost to the taxpayer of over $1000 each month. What is the difference between prescribed THC and the kind you get on a street corner? How is marijuana so dangerous and it's active ingredient, THC, is not harmful? Even better - why is one a dangerous drug with no medical value, whatsoever, and the other is prescribed to thousands of patients across the US? Other than cost and effectiveness, there is no difference. For what it's worth, I would prefer $100 worth of the real thing than $1000 worth of synthetics. It simply works better. But, if the government ever gets around to making it legal and available, the drug companies will lose millions in revenue for everything from sleeping pills and gastrointestinal drugs to SSRI's and anti-psychotics.

The bottom line is simple - all drugs that the pharmaceutical companies can can make money on are good and all drugs that are cheap, effective and readily available to anyone with some dirt and water are bad.

    • Posted By: Shankardada2 @ 12/22/2007 6:11:14 PM

Michael A., I agree with you on one point. Synthetic THC is a joke. It should be banned for the sole reason that people like you will make precisely that argument. Legal pharmaceuticals may kill some people, yes. But the number of Americans today who are ALIVE because of pharmaceuticals (think antibiotics, antivirals, antihypertensives, cholesterol meds, and anticoagulants) FAR outnumber the number of people who die because of rare drug interactions / overdoses. By your specious logic, we should also make heroin and cocaine legal, since forms of these medications are also used occasionally under the supervision of physicians. Heroin has been legal before - the British forced the Chinese in the 18-19th century to allow Britain to sell it freely in China. This led to a nation of addicts. China tried to fight a war against the British to rid themselves of the "poppy plague" but lost and so generations of Chinese became addicted. This what you and your ilk would have America become - slaves of the narco-nations and narco-multinational corporations. Ridiculous.

    Translation:
Its really a shame that the mexican government is letting things get so out of control. I dont blame everything on the US, but we definitly could stop it all very fast by changing our belligerent and schizophrenic stance on drugs. These savage bastards would have to go shine shoes on Sundays if we made drugs legal. When Al Capone was terrorizing Chicago, what did we do? We have companies now that bottle alcohol, regulate it, and make sure minors dont drink it. or try.
    Anyway.
The US and some Europeans countries and financed and made possible Trillions of deaths in Iran, Iraq, (much before the war) Afghanistan, Guatemala, Latin America, Africa,... the rest of the world. Its not that crazy an idea. What actually crazy, is that we defend our current posture so much. They will sadly just have to keep sspending, dying, until they get fed up, and try it their own way. I cant see what Im writing anymore, so there are many mistakes.

    • Posted By: Shankardada2 @ 12/22/2007 9:26:25 AM

To those who want to legalize drugs because they think it will solve problems - ARE you people insane??? Look at the two legal drugs in the USA today - tobacco and alcohol. Combined, these two drugs are far and away the number one cause of death in this country. And these drugs cost us hundreds of billions in medical bills and hundreds of billions more by killing what would otherwise be highly productive individuals. Now think about this - one marijuana joint is equal to FIVE cigarettes AND it impairs the ability to drive like alcohol. Cocaine causes cardiac arrythmias and can be hopelessly addictive. I don't know about you, but I don't want a nation of legal drug addicts. It is foolishness.

You're starting to see things that those in power wish were not so visible. The reason why this tyranny continues is the 'religious' faith in the myth of 'my country is better than your country' no matter what atrocities it perpetrates on its own people and the rest of the world.

  • Posted By: Shankardada2 @ 12/22/2007 9:19:08 AM

Violence in Mexico happens because the police and politicians are both corrupt and they care more about making an extra buck than they care about protecting and serving their people. Plain and simple truth.

  • Posted By: R3N3G4D3 @ 12/19/2007 5:22:08 AM

Crime is happening in every country. Here, There, and in every continent. Japh is very right on his statements. The Person who is against the legalization of drugs is actually supporting drug dealers. Plato's cave: People live inside a cave, rather than looking to the outside. We are looking at the mirror at the end of the cave where the image of the world is reflecting. We are getting fooled. Blue Pill or Red Pill?

If you're going to rant, send it to Hannity, he specializes in tirades that don't make sense, and would probably enjoy it more than we do...
Mexican singers definitely don't deserve death just because they sing songs about death. Songs about death can be incredibly meaningful.
And, um, wishing death on people, well...

I'm sorry, soldier, but I'm not really sure he's even talking about traveling to Mexico...
He didn't really mention it anywhere in the article, and most of what he is giving is just facts.
You should probably go senselessly rant somewhere else, where it makes sense or something...
Thank you for your service, I am truly grateful, but you should try not to be a bigot about everything...

In regards to Kadidlehopper's posted comment. I can tell you that it is safe to go and visit Mexico, I just went there in Novemner 07 with my wife and 12 year old son. This isn't the first time that we have visited and I will tell you that it won't be our last trip to Mexico. Aviously El que "NO" sabe sure doesn't know what he is talking about. I am currently on my third tour to Iraq and have been to Afghanistan and Kosovo. Yeah I'd rather be in MEXICO. It is people like this that hurts our economy. Can you imagine if evryone said Dont travel by planes because of 9-11? Imagine the impact on our economy.
