Comment: So now we have an Attorney General who doesn't know if Waterboading is torture. That's great. Sounds like he's gonna fit right in.

Comment: Newsweek -- can you please stop calling these techniques that "amount to torture?" Sleep deprivation and waterboarding are time-honored torture techniques that have been used the Khymer Rouge, Nazis, Stalin, etc. Furthermore, reporters everywhere, waterboarding is not "simulated drowning." It is actual drowning that comes to a halt before the person actually dies. If you would like further information on this, read this essay (http://tinyurl.com/ytwk2l) by the man who trained American soldiers in its use (so they would know how to psychologically deal with "torture," by the way. In the military, they're honest enough to actually call it torture.)

And for you people defending torture, be brave enough to say it. "We support torture." Not "enhanced interrogtation" (a term coined by the Nazi's, by the way.) Not "aggressive techniques." Torture. If you can't even be honest about what you believe in, you are cowards.

Oh, and kjeffery7? We won World War II without torture. And despite the current hysterics, that was a much, much, much more threatening conflict than this one. It amazes me that you seem so eager to emulate the people you hate.

Finally, our country's behavior has made it immensely more likely that American soldiers captured by enemy countries will be tortured. Ask yourselves what we could have said or done if the Iranians who captured that British ship several months back had waterboarded those soldiers. After all, we've given it our stamp of approval as an interrogation technique. The can of worms this administration has opened has put all of our troops in danger.

Comment: kjeffery7, Tipper, and Evolutionist are you the only other people on this site able to think without hatred blinding your logic?
Hearing comments like those from Braes and williamportor make me sick and wonder how much longer our nation can last with people like them still living.

Comment: Im amused by the fact so many people are shocked about the waterboarding issue. This is WAR. What should we do when we have a high value prisoner who has information that could save AMERICAN LIVES. Should we just say please to these fanatics and hope they will talk. Wake up people. Its the same theme as the bullshit RULES OF ENGAGEMENT that limit a soldiers ability to defend against attack. If someone shoots at you and is trying to kill you and yours, then by all means lets shoot back. The days of battlefield honor are gone. We must do all in our power to make sure we have the tools to be sucessfull, in our efforts to thwart terrorism. How do you think they would treat one of our operatives if captured? Ask the Pearl family about fair treatment. Grow a brain America!!!

Comment: -it was recently reported on MSNBC that there is a better than 6:1 ratio in Federal prosecutions of Democrats over Republicans by appointed attorneys. -

These are state and local and so sorry if Democrats happen to be involved in corrupt activity. Should AT ignore crimes so they don't upset your ratio?

Comment: The jury is still out on Mr. Mukasey as far as I'm concerned. This will be his first real test. If he makes an honest effort to uncover ALL the facts in this case, instead of only the facts Bush and Co. wants us to see,
then he will have done his job correctly. I'm not holding out much hope though. The American people are too stupid to care anymore. All they want to do is suckle right wing propaganda like a bunch of pigs!

Comment: As far as Law and Order, it was recently reported on MSNBC that there is a better than 6:1 ratio in Federal prosecutions of Democrats over Republicans by appointed attorneys. The Entire Justice Department is just a political extension of the criminal enterprise run by the Cheney-Bush oil cabal. In the Plame case they gave Rove several attempts to conform to the truth. Scooter was fed to the wolves and his sentence commuted precisely to shut him up. Two ATF agents rot in prison for shooting a fleeing felon. The list of disgraceful acts by this shameless crowd will only end if even the R's recognize the threats these precendents have on our constitution and side with the majority and act. Else we will wait and pray for relief on the 20th of Janurary, of '09. I doubt this AG is anything more than a placeholder, unless he manages to have a Grand Jury convened to hear evidence tomorrow. Joe Biden, whom I admire, needs to get back to the Senate, and drag Dodd with him. America needs them at their posts now, investigating this independently of the executive branch. Please have someone remind Obama that the vote matters and he should show up.
I am not interested in another Scooter being fed to the wolves. Let's get a holistic look at the entire lawless process from domestic wiretaps to wars of agression. If they can find it within themselves to swallow some personal pride, and admit they were hoodwinked by the conspiracies, they can then move forward with some righteous indignation at the cesspool that has been this administration all along. Hey Congres and Senate, we forgive you, you were lied to, now get to work and act as a check and produce some results. Use the gavels to crack some skulls. I remember the Church hearings... by God let's do it again.
What the heck, it's only our Constitution, being used as toilet paper about 1100 signing statements ago, by an imbecile alcoholic following Cheney's lead. What are you so afraid of? We have nothing to fear but the fear mongers themselves. Get to work.

Comment: The new attorney general will just make up some story to make the non-americans shut up for a second. I would have exucuted all those remotely involved in US terrorism, along with their family. America is fed up, we are tired of non-americas ruining this land. It is time for the american people to stand up and take back what is theres.

Comment: Did anyone listen to the CIA interrogator interview? He said that when HE wished to use harsh techniques HE and his colleagues had to present a well reasoned rationale to administration officials in oder to get permission. This flies in the face of media narrative of Bush ordering torture bots out to do his bidding. I would advise Time and the media at large that most people aren't buying this trope spoon fed by partisans in the CIA playing CYA. And Isikoff? Your report that the poor wayward CIA was flapping in the wind not understanding all the opinions sitting in their in box saying do not destroy the tapes and unsure because the WH did not ORDER the CIA not to destroy the tapes vindicates Bob Novak's dealings with Bill Harlow about Valerie Plame AND dispenses with the evil oppressive WH always pressuring and demanding things their way from the CIA - which is it? Also, Isikoff's report ignores what the New York Times reports - that Rodriguez didn't even care if the CIA lawyers approved, he didn't think he needed permission to destroy the tapes from anyone, so no wonder he ignored the WH, DOJ, Goss and Harman. Nice spin though.

Your detailing of the poor wayward CIA, flapping in the wind, not getting an ORDER from the WH to not destroy the tapes? Please. You've vindicated Bob Novak and his discussion with Bob Harlow about Valerie Plame and also dispensed with the evil oppressive WH pressuring the CIA in one report ignoring the NYT's account that says Rodriguez didn't even care if the CIA's lawyers told him not too. He said he didn't think he needed permission from ANYONE.

Comment: Some very good comments here. I would like to echo those that are saying Mukasey can prove his mettle here with a fair and honest and thorough investigation into these destroyed tapes. But, while no one in ths administration will acknowledge that waterboarding is torture; instead hiding behind a corrupt ruling by Gonzalez' Justice Dept. ruling that aggressive interrogation techniques(supposedly including waterboarding) are legal. Way to go Bush administration, maneuver Justice rulings that back anything immoral or illegal that gets in your way of running roughshod on the US Constitution!

Comment: How did this come be a story? Isn???t the CIA a clandestine agency? Isn???t it supposed to gather, destroy and manufacture evidence as it sees fit? Speaking of manufactured evidence; how can anyone be sure that the ???electronic intercept??? on the basis of which we determined that Iran has halted its military nuclear program was not a diversion? Aren???t countries in conflict supposed to be feeding in false electronic communications all the time? Or could it be that the whole Iranian nuclear story was a manufactured one?

Comment: Intelligence should be that, it should be honestly gatheres without any political tainting to either add to someones cred or to discredit. Intelligence is just that and it must be accurate. Any agent of the federal governmnet owes his allegiance to the United States of America, not to any political party.

Comment: Will the bullies in the White House be able to cow Mukasey like they did Gen Colin Powell? It is amazing hold many of our heros apparantly gave up the constitution simply by being call a coward, apparantly. How else did the Dick Cheney's and Donald Rumsfled run roughshot over these men? I hope Mukasey mom and dad hugged him enough or not enough that he doesn't want to fit in and can do his job.

Comment: It will be very revealing in many ways: is he a puppet? Did we get conned again by a President who makes conning us his prime calling? Mukasey could turn out to be a hero if he has the cajones. I sure hope he comes off better than he did in his confirmation hearings, which truly baffle me.

    • Posted By: Wisconsin Hugo @ 12/10/2007 10:54:24

Comment: Yes Sue! It happened again to no surprise since George W and company's goal has been to execute
the Neo-Con expantionists agenda at any cost. The Constitution with all its checks and balances
has stood in the administrations way and therefore the need to negate and undermine its emphasis
on transparency, responsibility and accountability. Prisioner abuse in the name of democracy has to
be expected under the circumstances (not much difference between the current administration and
Putin's methodology in this respect) and cover ups including the secret disposal of bodies, tapes
and the destruction of any "whistle blower's" career is par for the course. The end justifies the means
even if it results in long term damage to our country.

Comment: We the people can only hope that Mukasey is with us and not against6 us. Mukasey could go down in history as a great AG if he ends this Fascist nightmare of the Bush/Cheney Criminal Enterprise or walk through the rest of his life with head bowed and his tail between his legs.
