I think that it is impossible to stop gossip. It has been around forever, whether it's on the internet or straight from a persons mouth, trying to stop gossip would be like trying to stop a pandemic.

The fact that people sit in front of their computers and chat with people make them prone to have social isuues. All of these networking sites allow people that sit on front of their computers all day and be disconnected from the real world outside of the internet.
THis is silly. people should get over it and leave others be, who really cares. its unneccesary and a waste of time. keep your thoughts about ohters to yourself. however, theres really no stopping it, people will always talk :)

There are anonymous gossip sites like, GossipReport.com that put tools in place to discourage and delete gossip that the community decides is trashy. Gossipreport.com also raises the level of conversation by including politicians from presidential candidates down to the local mayoral race. Gossip has been around a long time and done properly like on GossipReport.com, it can be fun and intriguing.
On JuicyCampus's first week at New York University, items were posted about dozens of young men and women which were clearly libelous and defamatory. Probably the most shocking was one calling a particular girl (who was named) "so worthless that she ought to go Bobst Diving, " referring to the preferred method of suicide at NYU--jumping off the balcony in the Bobst Library. After complaints (and threats of lawsuits) by some of these young people (my daughter included), those particular posts were taken off the site. That such a forum for unchecked libel and potentially life-threatening language exists is a terrifying indictment of our culture in general and the evil potential of the internet specifically.
I think that some student's of today are lacking morals, respect, and integrity. All of these values starts at home with their parent's. Some things people say comes from ignorance and stupidity. Everyone in this country should be allowed to get some kind of education, without having to hear racist remarks behind it.
Im in the IT Field, let me say one thing. Hackerz own you and the govenment. You can not stop us. You can not stop anything we do ,...for the most part you dont even have a clue whats going on. The US govenment was in a frantic struggle during the mid 90's to gain some sort of controll over us. Today with Anti- terrorism laws,...they own all of us. But, I can still be out of reach of the FBI is I wanted to, but I have no reason to hide becuase I do not use my knowledge to destroy.
The laws protecting web providers from prosecution for user-contributed-content (UCC) are essential to the Internet. Without these laws, there would be no online review sites, no discussion forums, and no blogs, because the web providers could not risk legal liability for the contents. Even comment sections, like this one, could become a thing of the past.
For more on the body of law protecting UCC sites, check out http://www.rarpa.org/_pages/legal-reviews.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_230
Yes, because the youth of the past were so much better *sarcastic* if you don't like what people are posting about you, don't read it. And as for people gossiping about you, I advise not hanging around with a bunch of internet-hens anyway.
It could be an easy fix if the fix didn't scare people. But scaring anybody that wants to do people harm is the goal. It would be great if anonymity was banned from the net, and anywhere you posted comments you had to register in a publicly available database for all to peruse. All websites are required by law to register their domain with current contact information. But protected, that protection would be gone.
I would be surprised if that hadn't been the outcome and we can't blame students alone. Given complete anonimity are true feelings come out, we are not that nice any of us.
oh gee, what an inspirational story about our noble and dedicated youth! they are so pure, so dedicated and idealistic...NOT!!!! these young people are the future...i shudder to think...
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone
Another long standing site would be www.dontdatehimgirl.com . A known site used to anonymously make false and fraudulent accusations against men without the concern of responsibility or consequence to those that are being falsely and fraudulently accused of an unlimited number of acts and even crimes. One attempted lawsuit against the site failed due to supposed juristictional issues. While anonimity in protecting one's identity for a variety of reasons (certainly not the least of which is protecting against identity theft), it has been used for dishonorable and unethical reasons as well. And the argument that such sites are providing a service and such a service is protected speech leads to the justification of the harm to innocent individuals. Much the same argument is made in defending Capital Punishment "If a few innocent people are executed, so what? Most are guilty... aren't they?" Andrew
The internet web sites are freedom gone wrong. Although I surf the internet I don't fully trust them and it needs a lot of common sense to belief what is on the web. Peolple who easily belief whatever is in the internet lack common sense, naive or are just plain stupid. The coin has two faces. Seek for explaination from both sides. Read with an open mind, do not be prejudicial. Remember at times even Newsweek was biased and got things wrong! Facts can be manipulated but truth will prevail.
