Tharsh when has support for the establishment ever gotten anything done for the average American. Also if you look at Oprah's beginnings she is very qualified to speak about the average American. Also think about this, if Oprah decided to back Hillary, don't you think she would be overjoyed with her endorsement? A celebrity endorsement is no reason to decide who to back for President. Obama stands for a new America in the new Millenium. A detox from the George Bush years

And that's what we need to focus upon and work toward.

The longer the problem is framed in terms of race, the longer it will be perpetuated. To be united, we have to recognize it for what it is: a class problem. It is a problem of elites successfully maintaining division amongst white and black, to the point where there are invisible enemies to both. There is no such "white agenda" just like there is no "black agenda". Together, however, we CAN have an American agenda.

It seems many of you have also forgotten that Oprah's viewers are not only mostly white, but also the upper middle class. Obama doesn't support the agenda of this group, so what good does it do for her to support him when the majority of her viewers are Republicans. Also, to Coollady, the first lady does not handle even an eighth of the politcal responsibility and decision making on a day to day basis that the president does. Just because Hilary lived in the White House doesn't mean she is ready to be president. Hell, she didn't even know her husband was having an affair! If we are going for relatives here, we might as well put Chelsea in. This whole thing is ridiculous. It is a waste of time for non-political figures to endorse candidates. Any one with sense would ignore it.

      GopGator ,
RE: Oprah's Republican audience...That's exactly why Oprah is effective! Think about what ya boy Dubya has done to the Republican Party! Now, make a quick appraisal of your '08 Republican candidates...Many of the fed-up Republicans WILL vote for Obama! There are quite a few of their posts on here!!! Doesn't appear these Republicans and Independents are falling for the "closet" Republican, Hillary.

I love Oprah as do most people...and I think Obama is a good man, but his time has not yet come...he can't win the Presidency with or without Oprah. In addition I am sad to see that Oprah would do this for the first black man to run for President. She should donate to his campaign, and voice her support for him, but going on the campaign trail with him is over the top.

    • Posted By: csmithin2007 @ 12/10/2007 11:43:53 AM

Maryannflaker, I believe your last sentence really says it all. No "personality" should go on the campaign trail with a candidate. They surely should give endorsements if that is how they feel and donate to the campaign but we need to hear strictly from the candidates about issues and their ideas on making change so we can make informative decisions. I have yet to decide on who I will vote for and it won't be because of color or gender, my vote will be decided on by what I hear and believe from the candidates.

    • Posted By: JGaines90 @ 12/10/2007 10:15:23 AM

MaryAnnFlaker, Barack Obama is not the first Black man to run for the Presidency just as Hillary Clinton is not the first woman. There are many woman who have voiced their support of Hillary Clinton. Do you believe that Oprah would be getting the same amount of negative attention of she chose to support Hillary? Would people claim that the only reason she was supporting Hillary was because she is a woman? I don't know the answer to these questions but I just think that it is very curious that people would demonize Barack for having a Black person endorse him but don't demonize Clinton (who is in a similar situation) for having women support her.

      In response to Maryann Flaker

Barack Obama is NOT the first black man to run for president-Where the hell have you been ?????
Allan Keyes- a Republican ran in 2000 AND 2004. Prior to that Jesse Jackson AND Al Sharpton both ran for the Dems.
This is part of the problem with this country-All you so called voters are not fully informed and that is how we end up with Bush in the White House and our young people dying in the Middle East in an illegal/trumped up war.
By the way Rep-candidate Huckabee currently has Chuck Norris campaigning and making television ads endorsing him. Is this OKAY ???

  • Posted By: greeneman @ 12/10/2007 11:33:52 AM

Please! Oprah is so obsessed with her "power" she has lost touch. It is most obvious when she gives away all her favorite things (which I am sure companies donate and she doesn't pay for). She revels and glows in the "worship" that her devotees give her. Whats next, Saint Oprah so we can pray to her? Anyway, anyone she endorses surely loses my vote and I hold no value in her opinions. Obama may be fine but if he thinks it will take OPRAH to get a win, he's from the same planet she is.

    • Posted By: ryanx469 @ 12/10/2007 11:43:36 AM

Forloveofmankind, what a terribly ignorant thing to say. To claim that there is a "white agenda" is to generalize all white people as conspirators in some vast and commonly recognized scheme. As a white, Obama supporting, Bush despising American, let me assure you that nothing could be farther from the truth. There is a conservative "agenda", yes, and an elite agenda, without question. that the w

  • Posted By: john1969 @ 12/10/2007 11:43:34 AM

please the only reason she did this is because obama is black it could have been micheal vick and she would have endorsed hi because of his color she needs to get a life all she does is talk down to people like she is some queen i mean really who is she ! just a talk show host no better than springer or maury she is just an overbearing power hungry joke

I watched the first Iowa event live on C-SPAN and thought Obama was magnificent. I do not in any way think Oprah outshone Obama. Oprah is unique in this culture - there is no one else like her. She was genuine and sincere in her intro. She movingly explained why she supports Obama. And when Obama spoke he quickly and convincingly made clear why Oprah - and so many others - are flocking to his campaign. He inspires people. He moves people. Part of that is his thoughtful, quiet nature - he is not" Mr. Razzimitazz", but rather a soft-spoken, brilliant thinker - very reminiscent of Robert Kennedy. As to the "mantra" being put forth by many in the media that the Hillary vs. Obama contest pits "experience vs. change", I just want someone to explain what all this so-called experience is that Hillary has over Obama. Yes, she was First Lady - but she failed completely at the one official government task she was given - reforming health care. As a Senator, what has she done that is so note-worthy, other than side with George Bush on Iraq and Iran? I think both she and Obama - and Edwards, for that matter - have legislative experience. (Abraham Lincoln served only ONE two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives - plus time in the Illinois State legislature - before becoming president) What IS important is how they make decisions. Obama took a huge risk in 2002 by coming out against going to war in Iraq. That took great courage, and shows that he is a thinker and a man of conviction. So the "mantra" part about "change" is true - he is a breath of fresh air and a distinct change from most politicians. I think Obama is going to win this thing!! Jane, Cary, NC

After Hurricane Oprah swept through those states, Obama looked like he wast there to cut the ribbon at a supermarket opening! Come on now! :)

      • Posted By: fafolod @ 12/10/2007 11:41:48 AM

See the difference between your comment and Jane Cary's. She appeals to reason by making logically consistent statements. You, one the other hand, appeal to pre-existing prejudices (i.e., emotions) to be convincing. Your appeal would have worked if all were in a state of tutelage. Unfortunately we've evolved to a point where rational appeals triumph emotional ones. Reason triumphs racism and bigotry.

It seems Oprah's had her share of misplaced confidence lately, I don't if I'm that sure of her judgment. Besides I vote on the candidates record not which Mega-rich TV star he can get to endorse him. So I'm still watching and reading up on all of the candidates.
I'm not interested if they are black or white, male or female I want to see our troops coming home and the economy making a recovery. It doesn't matter what they claim in Washingotn D.C. In NE Indiana there's a recession going on!!

  • Posted By: texaggie08 @ 12/10/2007 11:34:29 AM

So, it looks as though everyone seems to care more about skin color and celebrity endorsment than what Obama's actual political platform is. "Well if Oprah is endorsing him then I'm not voting for him!" What a great outlook this country's voters have. And you're right, Oprah is just as average as the rest of us, because we all know how to creat a multi-million dollar industry out of ourselves and build schools for children in Africa. American voters, do you even know what Obama's stance is on women's rights, abortion, gay marriage, the war on terror? No, you don't because you pay way too much attention to the fact that he's black and Oprah is on his side. Your vote counts just as much as Oprah's vote does, only she is doing something to support her candidate. What are you doing to support yours?

  • Posted By: paulte @ 12/10/2007 11:38:37 AM

The only good thing about the Oprah endorsement of Obama is that she is not endorsing Hillary. This should annoy Hillary. Hopefully, Oprah will have some influence on all the silly white women who watch her show!

  • Posted By: greeneman @ 12/10/2007 11:37:35 AM

Please! Oprah is so obsessed with her "power" she has lost touch. One only has to watch her as she glows and revels in the worship she gets from her disciples when she gives away her favorite things (not that she pays for any of it). If Obama, who may be a fine candidate, needs Oprah to get him elected, then they both must live on the same planet. It is sad that we live in a society where a talk show host can wield such power. Whatever happened to real statesmen?

i've read comments from members of this site since America's desegregation America has never had a black , Asian, Hispanic, or any other ethnicity appointed as president of the United States, Barrack Obama is half white and half black he seem s to be honest so what if oprah supports him , i think Africa Americans have someone to look up to. Spending 8 years in the White House does not give you experience to be a Presidendial candidate, but only experience with the president,Monica Lewinsky can attest to that.

  • Posted By: JGaines90 @ 12/10/2007 11:34:54 AM

Emmy then who do you support cuz they all use celebrity endorsements and EVERYONE of them would be elated if Oprah decided to endorse them

  • Posted By: RDMaryland @ 12/10/2007 11:22:07 AM

For those who state that Oprah's only endorsing Obama because he???s black, if she indeed only sees things in black and white, why don???t we hear her singing the praises of Dr. Condi Rice? Or better yet, why didn't Oprah endorse Rev. Sharpton in 04. By her own admission she's voted for as many Republicans and Democrats. Like Aretha says, ya???ll need to THINK!

    • Posted By: Joke @ 12/10/2007 11:33:35 AM

I already addressed this RD.. . Plus Condi could never be openly embraced, because she's a sellout and works for Bush. You live in Maryland, you should know this.. . Why did you ask?

Comment: I haven't seen 1/10th of the skepticism from Chuck Norris's endorsement of Huckabee as I see from the Oprah Obama endorsement. That just proves my point. Chuck Norris is an international figure who has also reached an iconic status. Please explain to me why there hasn't been ANYONE claiming that Chuck is supporting Huckabee because he is a white man or he is a former christian televangelist, or he is from arkansas. Why can you just accept the fact that Chuck Norris just believes in what Huckabee stands for and yet you have a problem with Oprah? You are uncomfortable with a black woman supporting a black man because of your own issues with race and your own fickle baseless assumptions about what Oprah stands for. Besides race, Obama and Oprah have ONE THING in common. The vast majority of their followers are white. They both relate to the majority of Americans because although they value their cultural roots they relate to every American. You see two black people and automatically think it is just about race when their message is about a new America. Shame on you.

Beautiful comment. Reason at its best. I could not have said it better.

    • Posted By: Tony C. @ 12/10/2007 10:33:40 AM

That's because no one takes Chcuk Norris seriouosly. he's a non-entity!

  • Posted By: Sue46703 @ 12/10/2007 11:31:34 AM

Ophra's made her share of OPP'S lately. I don't know if I really trust her judgment. Besides I don't vote for someone by what big name star he can get to endorse him. Didn't the Clinton's have Barbra? I'd rather study his/her record it speaks much louder than a Mega-rich TV star.

  • Posted By: JOswaks @ 12/10/2007 11:31:32 AM

Unless there are other personalities who have unlimited air-time with equal brand identity that can be tied to each candidate Oprah Winfrey should be forced to sit on the sidelines. How can one simply dismiss that she is the best possible means of support for Obama.

  • Posted By: tolidude @ 12/10/2007 11:23:54 AM

If Oprah's intelligence was so "average" Coollady, why is she so rich, successful and influencial? Your comment shows how below average YOUR intelligence is, because it's not about black or white anymore, it's about green. And Oprah's reputation speaks for itself, she deals with the rainbow sister, and not Obama because he's black, it's because we americans want change, and he symbolizes a new, transparent america.

    • Posted By: Joke @ 12/10/2007 11:31:24 AM

This was already addressed. She got very, VERY, VERY lucky... Plus it doesn't hurt her 'common person' look by openly admitting that she use to smoke 'CRACK COCAINE' when she did the news for Channel 11 in Baltimore . .. :)

  • Posted By: Hermio @ 12/10/2007 11:31:10 AM

Why do we keep referring to Obama as black? It is just as accurate to say he is white. Don't both parents count?
