Not in my lifetime has America voted a true Statesman into the Oval Office. Judging from the present field of candidates, it will be another 'lifetime' before a true American Statesman emerges, if ever. Assuming that Obama really does have a chance and wins the election, who will be President, Obama or Oprah? Will 'Camp Montecito' be the new Camp David?

Just because Hilary spent 8 years in the white house as First Lady, this does not mean she has eight years of experience to be president. I do not understand why the media does not pick up on this fact. Just because she knows the layout of the white house does not mean she will be a good president. One more thing, did we not have enough of "experience" with having George Bush and Cheney in the white house for eight years? Where did all that experience get us? I think it is time for a fresh start, fresh ideas and a new face. Vote Obama.

Coollady, We've had candidates in the past and present who have had more experience that Obama.......but thaty have not been good presidents either. The fact that he does not have a lot of experience I find refreshing. Oprah has a right to endorse the candidate of her choice just like anybody else and why are you just focusing on Oprah......when other celeberties are doing the same thing for their candidate? You are obviously a racist otherwise you would not have made a comment about her black friend Obama etc...... What has Obam being a black man hav eto do with it anyway? Oprah has friends of all colors, race, gender etc.... Don't make this about race? I feel sorry for you.......you need to check yourself.

All candidates should be judged by their merit. As voters, we need to be responsible enough to look beyond whatever 'celeb du jour' is associated with the campaign and focus on the candidates.

What really bothered me about Obama was the way he changed his inflection and tenor during his speech in an effort to ingratiate himself to the audience. Being folksy is nothing new for a candidate. Obama betrayed himself, however, when he included a double negative during his speech inclusive of slang ("don't mean 'nuthin'"). This is demeaning to both the candidate and the audience.

I would like to see Oprah as Obama's Vice President. I have always felt that Oprah Winfrey speaks well and is knowledgeable of issues from all sides of the fence: (a) being a woman; (b) being an african american; (c) at one time being poor; (d) at one time being middle class; (e) now being wealthy; (f) being famous. Those of us who come from rags to riches understand appreciate everything in between. How can the other candidates even remotely relate to all of those issues? With Oprah, Obama has the extra boost he needs to win....Obama for President and Oprah for Vice President....2008!!

Its ridiculous that a talk show host should be shoving a candidate down people's throats. Sure, recommend books, self-improvement gurus, etc., NOT political candidates. If she should be plugging anyone, it should be the woman candidate. But, again, we have this race issue...she would not be pushing Obama if he was not black. By the way, exactly WHAT are his great qualifications for this job, Oprah? And please, Oprah as vice-president? Why not just have have Brad Pitt? Everyone likes him, he is popular, so why not? The presidential race has lost all integrity and Oprah is making is worse.

Obama , at times, shows great promise - other times he is plain uninspiring. Yesterday, after Oprah's great introduction, he flopped. Hard to figure out !

I love Oprah... that said: I too feel she is mainly backing Obama because he is black. She has her own agenda here and I respect that. Obama simply doesnt have the skill to be president. Yes, he wants it, yes, he is a great guy and father.... BUT WHAT IS HE REALLY IF HE NEEDS GOT THAT>>> NEEDS OPRAH, A TV TALK SHOW HOSTESS (the best) To BACK HIM????

I was so very very terribly disappointed when I saw Oprah hit the campaign trail. I was crushed at her speech. It almost sounded like she was running HERSELF. She was flailing her arms and hands around like she was imitating other candidates. : ( She has done herself and OBAMA a terrible injustice here. If MONEY can buy votes, he might win.

Would it have made you feel better if Oprah was white? I fail to see how Obama needs Oprah to endorse him. He is already picking up quite a lot of steam. Oprah's endorsement is a safety mechanism: As long as she does not endorse your opponent you're good. Which is exactly how I think Obama's campaign sees it.

  • Posted By: sugabiskit @ 12/10/2007 11:14:34 AM

Oprah is not for the best candidate;she is for the black man......I cannot believe anyone can't see that. SHe is SO pro-black it isn't even funny anymore. No; Oprah needs to back off po-taters and hit the treadmill not campaign trail with her man crush....BOO OPRAH>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Mr. Fineman, you seem to be the one enamored with Ms. Winfrey. While I agree Oprah's speech was quite good, in my mind Sen. Obama is the most gifted, eloquent, speaker/story-teller in the 2008 campaign. He is able to weave his personal anecdotes in context with a broken public policy system without reading a script or looking at notes. Obama, like Oprah is a genuinely gifted person of color whose confluence upon this stage at this hour is truly providential. Americans would be wise to at least listen.

    • Posted By: Joke @ 12/10/2007 11:12:28 AM

I agree, there is absolutely no reason NOT to at least listen. The problem is that in 'Maryland' most people ONLY listen to the Blue side of the debate. Check the last 50 years of Presidential voting records and you'll see where I'm heading with this RD.

Shows who the real Lemmings are...those of you who make a hero of oprah.

The candadates need to get their support from the people on their own. And not be selected because a TV icon supports them. Oprah does alot for people and every one likes her. But when it comes to voting let people make their own choices . Maybe they dont feel as the people will see them for who they are and what they themselfs stand for.

    • Posted By: fafolod @ 12/10/2007 11:12:02 AM

You speak as if Oprah is forcing you to vote for Obama. As if she has a revolver pointed at you, ordering you to vote for Obama. Oprah's task this weekend was to gather grounds, that she did. Obama's was to make a sell, that he did.

I attended the Iowa JJ Dinner and the Cedar Rapids (12-8) event and Fineman's impression is way off! Mr.Howard you could be referred to one who would suggest Obama's time is not now. He should wait to be asked? His time is now and he is ready to lead! I felt the energy of a great movement in Obama a long time ago and Saturday night in CR I felt it again onloy it was bigger and more energized. His time is now!

Oprah is an evolved and over-sensationalized talk show host who, along with her agent and manager, stole from the real innovators of talk/reality shows. It is obvious that the changes in composition of consumers and the individuals who are followers and not leaders, shifted during the past couple of decades. Moreover, it reveals the degradation of our society depicted in making heroes and leaders of those that have little REAL contributions to science, art, and culture; they mearly regurgitave the same junk in new ways, while depleting scarce resources that should otherwise be allocated to important issues. Time will reveal the errors in our ways.

someone please tell me what political "seasoning" will add to the next president. obviously the most "seasoned" politicians continue to make the wrong decisions and we have a LEADER in Barack Obama that is the best QUALIFIED candidate to unite this country, restore our respect around the world, and exert the best JUDGEMENT out of every candidtate running for the presidency in 2008.

  • Posted By: JGaines90 @ 12/10/2007 10:50:01 AM

Tony C i'm starting to think you don't believe what you are writing. Obviously Oprah does do things that don't make great business sense for her IE supporting a political candidate for the first time in her career. Oprah is smart enough to know that supporting Obama most probably detracts from her "billions" and yet she is willing to stand up for someone that she believes in

    • Posted By: Tony C. @ 12/10/2007 10:54:03 AM

Not really in terested in your opinion andym ore than you are in mine. Oprah is out for Oprah and truly belive that she puts herself and her race before what is best for the country. She thinks her billions will keep her safe. Woman needs a reality check big time!

Tony C. is just like many others in this forum...I CAN SMELL THEIR FEAR THRU MY MONITOR!!!

"Will Oprah eclipse Obama"? She already has eclipsed him. In fact, the news story isn't about Obama, it's about Oprah. Somewhere in all the hoopla, his message got lost and it's more about celebrity than issues.
If a poll were done today on an election between Oprah and Obama...he would lose.

As an elderly man in South Mississippi, I have watched the Civil Rights Movement in the sixties and I remember Dr. King's speech. Ms. Oprah and Mr. Obama represent the spirit of that dream and those who have succeeded in this country should remind all of us what great potential this nation has, this world has IF we dare to embrace the fact that God loves us all and has not given us a spirit of fear or hatred. I can't tell anybody how to vote or who to vote for, but it warms my heart to see a semblance of that I have a dream spirit still alive in this great country.
