I do not believe the comment "This is where 9/11 has brought us" is anywhere near correct. It's where this administration has taken us. It's proven that being tortured one will say anything to have it stop. How can that info be useful? Really, hasve all the detentions, loss of civil rights, torture, etc., helped save any U. S. lives? I doubt it, but the Iraq debacle sure has cost some. Ask yourself who has benefitted from this war. Mike in Park City, Utah

I often sit and wonder what it must have been like during that very last moments when, being trapped on the 97th floor of the World Trade Center, some unknown person realized that the building was falling away from beneath them and that in any second they would be crushed to death by the falling concrete and steel of a once awe inspiring building.
But then- those of us that lived- went home to our families that day.
I am not an advocate for torture but I also wonder how many people would be screaming about water boarding (for example) had it been used on one of the 9-11 hijackers and the evil plot was reveled and the attacks prevented.
But then- those of us that lived- went home to our families that day and have a chance to second guess and ???what if??? the world events that took place since the 9-11 attacks.
I wonder what the right answer is and I wonder how do we deal with and interrogate people that truly believe that god has ordered that they wage jihad to kill us and destroy our way of life- people that believe they will go to heaven and reap the rewards of a wonderful afterlife because they fought and killed in the name of god.
I hope that those people from our government, which the media paint as villains and evil doers, are well trained and get information that will lead to the stopping of another 9-11.
I hope that at the end of the day they can continue to return home to their families ??? much like the reporter who wrote this story ??? at the end of the day.
"How can the author jump...?" onw writer asks? Well, what do you think we're doing, and why do you think they destroyed the tapes? Do you think the interrogators sit around and pass around cookies, skipping the person they want to question, and hope he feels so bad about being skipped he tells all? Grow up. Torture is torture - one can debate all day long about different levels, but you wind up wallowing in the mud. We are better than that. We have to be. It doesn't work, after all - it has not been shown to provide truth, only responses. And they are as worthless as the methods used.
How can the author jump, jcreight asks? What do you think we are doing? Do you believe the CIA is just passing around cookies to everyone but the "interogee" and hoping they feel bad enough about being skipped to tell all? Torture is torture - go ahead and try to justify different levels; you're still playing in the mud. We're better than that. We have to be.
Though I have not seen "torture tapes," I have been fortunate enough to see the Nick Berg execution video. I say fortunate because, as I watched that horrible video and tears involuntarily ran down my cheeks at hearing that poor man's screams of terror, I decided then and there that I was no longer a supporter of the war in Iraq. That was at least three years ago. It took that - the picture of a young man's dying breath and the cowardice and indifference of his executioners being seared into my consciousness - for me to realize that the lives lost in 9/11 were too many, even before we started killing innocents and insurgents across the ocean. In my opinion, if everyone were allowed to see just one torture tape or just one brutal hands-on execution video, things would be much different. People say that overexposure to violence is the doom of our society. They are wrong. Watching someone's head being ripped off, really being ripped off, will most definitely put a whole new value on human life. Trust me.
And now we join the hooded, now we join the masked, now we join the opressors, those who maim, mutilate, forever scar and destroy. Our filthy hands will no longer point toward freedom but the gulag, the secret prison, the very things we fought against.
I applaud General Hayden for admitting what was discovered. God forgive us for what has been done in our name, without our assent. Guide those who seek the truth to uncover all instances of wrongdoing under Porter Goss, Cheney, and the Oil Cabal.
Let's fix Democracy here. Oligarchy, Domestic Spying, Torture, Threatening Russia, Threatening WWIII, how soon can this end?
This item has a subtitle of "a reporters reflection". At least some editor had the brains to tack that on because the only fact in this piece by John Barry is that he watched tourture videos.

This piece is labled "a reporters reflection". At least some editor had the brains to stick that on because John Barrys only facts are that he watched tourture videos.
